Project – The Influence of Digital Marketing Adoption on the Sales Performance of Small Businesses (A Study of Selected Retail Enterprises in Ilorin West Local Government Area, Kwara State)
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
The rapid advancement of information and communication technology has significantly transformed the way businesses operate across the globe. One of the most profound changes has been the shift from traditional marketing methods to digital marketing platforms that leverage the internet, mobile technologies, and social media to reach customers more efficiently. Digital marketing has become an essential tool for businesses seeking to improve visibility, customer engagement, and sales performance in an increasingly competitive marketplace (Kotler & Keller, 2016).
Small businesses, particularly retail enterprises, play a vital role in economic development through job creation, income generation, and stimulation of local economies. In Nigeria, small businesses constitute a large proportion of commercial activities at the grassroots level and contribute significantly to household income and employment (SMEDAN, 2017). Retail enterprises such as shops, supermarkets, fashion outlets, and electronics stores dominate urban and semi-urban areas and serve as a major link between producers and consumers.
Sales performance is a critical indicator of business success, especially for small businesses with limited financial capacity. Improved sales performance enables businesses to cover operating costs, expand operations, and sustain long-term growth. However, many small businesses in Nigeria continue to struggle with low sales turnover due to intense competition, changing consumer preferences, limited market reach, and reliance on traditional marketing methods such as word-of-mouth, banners, and physical promotions (Aremu & Adeyemi, 2011).
Digital marketing adoption offers small businesses an opportunity to overcome these challenges by providing cost-effective and wide-reaching marketing channels. Digital marketing tools such as social media marketing, email marketing, search engine optimization, and online advertising enable businesses to interact directly with customers, promote products in real time, and access broader markets beyond their immediate locations (Chaffey & Ellis-Chadwick, 2019). Through digital platforms, small businesses can enhance brand awareness, improve customer relationships, and influence purchasing decisions.
Despite the potential benefits of digital marketing, its adoption among small businesses in Nigeria remains relatively low. Factors such as limited digital skills, poor internet infrastructure, lack of awareness, and resistance to technological change have constrained the effective use of digital marketing tools by many small business owners (Ogunnaike & Kehinde, 2013). Consequently, many retail enterprises fail to exploit the opportunities offered by digital platforms to improve sales performance.
Ilorin West Local Government Area of Kwara State is a major commercial center with a growing number of small retail enterprises engaged in the sale of consumer goods, fashion items, electronics, and household products. While competition among retailers in the area continues to increase, many businesses still rely heavily on traditional marketing approaches, limiting their ability to attract and retain customers. Understanding the influence of digital marketing adoption on sales performance within this local context is therefore essential.
This study examines the influence of digital marketing adoption on the sales performance of small businesses, using selected retail enterprises in Ilorin West Local Government Area, Kwara State as a case study.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the growing importance of digital technologies in modern business operations, many small retail enterprises in Nigeria have not fully adopted digital marketing practices. As a result, these businesses struggle to compete effectively in markets increasingly driven by online engagement and digital communication. Poor sales performance, declining customer base, and limited market visibility remain common challenges confronting small retailers (SMEDAN, 2017).
In Ilorin West Local Government Area, retail enterprises operate in a highly competitive environment where numerous businesses offer similar products to the same target customers. Without effective marketing strategies, many retailers experience low sales turnover and difficulty expanding their customer base. Traditional marketing methods, though still relevant, are often insufficient in reaching today’s digitally connected consumers, especially younger and urban populations.
The limited adoption of digital marketing among small businesses can be attributed to inadequate digital literacy, lack of technical skills, fear of online fraud, and limited financial resources. Many business owners are unaware of how digital marketing tools can directly influence sales performance through increased customer reach, improved product visibility, and enhanced customer engagement (Chaffey & Ellis-Chadwick, 2019). This lack of understanding discourages investment in digital marketing initiatives.
Furthermore, existing studies on digital marketing in Nigeria often focus on large firms or the banking and telecommunications sectors, with limited attention given to small retail enterprises at the local government level. There is insufficient empirical evidence on how digital marketing adoption affects the sales performance of small businesses in Ilorin West Local Government Area. This gap in knowledge limits the ability of business owners, policymakers, and support agencies to design effective strategies for promoting digital marketing adoption among small enterprises.
Therefore, the problem addressed in this study is the low level of digital marketing adoption among small retail businesses and its effect on their sales performance in Ilorin West Local Government Area, Kwara State.
