Project – The Influence of Interfaith Community Activities on Peaceful Coexistence: A Study of Selected Communities in Kaduna State

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

Peaceful coexistence is an important condition for social stability, community development and the effective functioning of pluralistic societies. In communities where people belong to different religious, ethnic and cultural groups, peaceful coexistence involves more than the absence of violent conflict; it also includes mutual respect, tolerance, cooperation, constructive communication and the willingness of groups to live together despite differences. Religious diversity can provide opportunities for social interaction and collective development when differences are managed through dialogue and inclusive community relationships. However, where religious identities become associated with competition, mistrust or exclusion, they can contribute to social fragmentation and conflict. Research on Christian-Muslim relations in Nigeria indicates that although religious tensions and violent conflicts have occurred, peaceful relationships and cooperation between Christians and Muslims also exist and can be strengthened through community-level engagement and inclusive forms of interaction (Ossai, 2024).

Nigeria provides an important context for examining peaceful coexistence because Christianity and Islam constitute the country’s two major religious traditions, with substantial populations living in close proximity in many parts of the country. Religious identity sometimes overlaps with ethnicity, political interests, social class and historical grievances, making intergroup relations complex. At the same time, Nigerians from different religious communities routinely interact in markets, schools, workplaces, neighbourhoods, professional associations and other community settings. Ossai (2024) observes that existing scholarship has often concentrated on Christian-Muslim conflict while comparatively fewer studies have examined concrete examples of peaceful interreligious relations. The author’s review of studies on Nigeria identified civilian agency, cooperation, inclusive governance and interactions between ordinary members of different religious communities as important factors associated with peaceful Christian-Muslim relations. This suggests that peace should not be understood solely as an outcome imposed by governments or security institutions but also as something that can emerge through everyday relationships and community-based activities (Ossai, 2024).

Interfaith community activities constitute one mechanism through which people from different religious traditions can establish relationships, reduce misconceptions and develop shared approaches to community problems. Such activities may include interfaith dialogue meetings, joint community development projects, peace education, religious leaders’ forums, youth engagement, women’s peace initiatives, joint humanitarian activities, cultural events and collaborative responses to emergencies. These activities create opportunities for participants to interact with members of other faiths outside situations of conflict and may encourage recognition of shared community interests. Research on interfaith peacebuilding in northern Nigeria demonstrates that programmes involving local actors can create spaces for dialogue and peacebuilding, although their effectiveness depends on the social and political context in which they operate (Ostby et al., 2020). The Kaduna-based Interfaith Mediation Centre has been particularly important in this context because interfaith peacebuilding programmes have sought to involve local actors with knowledge and connections within communities.

Kaduna State is particularly relevant to the study of interfaith activities because the state has experienced significant episodes of ethno-religious tension while also developing important institutional and community-based peacebuilding initiatives. The 2000 Kaduna crisis and subsequent episodes of violence produced substantial social disruption and contributed to mistrust between religious communities. Research conducted years after the 2000 crisis found that exposure to intergroup violence was associated with lower levels of trust and greater prejudice toward members of the religious out-group among residents in conflict-prone Kaduna communities (Scacco & Warren, 2021). Such findings demonstrate that the consequences of religious conflict can persist beyond the period of physical violence, affecting social relationships and attitudes within communities. Consequently, interventions designed to create opportunities for positive intergroup contact and communication remain important for rebuilding relationships and strengthening peaceful coexistence (Scacco & Warren, 2021).

The history of interfaith peacebuilding in Kaduna also demonstrates that religious leaders and community actors can play important roles in efforts to reduce conflict. One notable example is the Kaduna Peace Declaration of 22 August 2002, through which Christian and Muslim religious leaders committed themselves to peaceful coexistence, mutual respect, cooperation and dialogue. The declaration also provided for a joint mechanism to encourage dialogue between the two faith communities. Musa (2016) argues that although the peace agreement was significant, an agreement by itself could not guarantee sustainable peace and needed to be supported by genuine dialogue that was inclusive, mutual and transparent. Similarly, Ojo and Orebiyi (2017), in their study of the implementation of the Kaduna Peace Declaration, found that religious actors and organisations played an important role in promoting conversations across religious boundaries and rebuilding constructive relationships. These experiences suggest that formal agreements can provide a foundation for peace, but sustained interpersonal and community engagement may be necessary to translate peace commitments into everyday coexistence.

Interfaith activities can also contribute to peaceful coexistence by providing opportunities for members of different religious groups to develop social contact and challenge negative stereotypes. When individuals interact repeatedly in cooperative settings, they may gain opportunities to understand the beliefs, concerns and experiences of members of other groups. This is consistent with evidence from Nigeria showing that intergroup social contact can influence prejudice and discrimination. Scacco and Warren’s work on intergroup relations in Nigeria demonstrates the importance of contact and social relationships in understanding attitudes toward religious and ethnic out-groups. More broadly, Ossai (2024) reports that peaceful Christian-Muslim relationships in Nigeria have been supported by civilian agency, cooperative relationships and the efforts of community members who deliberately prevent tensions from escalating into violence. Interfaith community activities may therefore provide a practical setting through which positive contact, trust and cooperation can be developed.

The relevance of interfaith activities is further demonstrated by the institutional arrangements established in Kaduna State to promote religious understanding and peaceful coexistence. The Kaduna State Bureau of Interfaith describes its mandate as promoting dialogue, mutual respect and cooperation among diverse faith communities and was established through the merger of the former Christian and Islamic religious affairs bureaus. Its stated objectives include promoting religious understanding and harmony and coordinating relationships with religious organisations. In addition, contemporary research on Christian-Muslim relations in Kaduna continues to identify interfaith dialogue, collaborative community activities and peacebuilding as important mechanisms for strengthening social cohesion. Egbogah and Maichiki (2025), for example, identify interfaith initiatives and collaborative activities in areas such as education, health and economic development as opportunities for improving community cohesion in Kaduna State. These developments provide a relevant basis for investigating whether residents who participate in or are exposed to interfaith community activities perceive stronger levels of peaceful coexistence in their communities.

Despite the existence of religious differences and a history of conflict, Kaduna State therefore presents an important opportunity for examining how communities can move from religious division toward cooperation. Interfaith community activities may create platforms through which religious leaders, youth, women, community organisations and ordinary residents interact around common concerns rather than solely around religious differences. However, the existence of such programmes does not automatically establish that they produce peaceful coexistence. The nature, frequency, inclusiveness and quality of participation may determine whether interfaith activities actually influence relationships between community members. Musa (2016) specifically emphasizes that sustainable peace requires dialogue that is genuine, inclusive, mutual and transparent, while research on northern Nigerian peacebuilding cautions that local peacebuilding initiatives can encounter challenges arising from unequal power relations and broader political contexts. Therefore, this study seeks to examine the influence of interfaith community activities on peaceful coexistence in selected communities in Kaduna State, with particular attention to dialogue, joint community activities, peace education and collaborative engagement among people of different faiths.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Kaduna State has a history of ethno-religious conflict that has affected relationships between communities and contributed to mistrust, social separation and disruption of normal community life. The large-scale violence experienced in Kaduna, particularly the 2000 crisis, demonstrated how religious and communal tensions can produce consequences extending beyond the immediate loss of lives and property. Scacco and Warren (2021) found that years after the 2000 crisis, residents in conflict-prone areas of Kaduna continued to exhibit mistrust and prejudice toward members of religious out-groups. The persistence of such attitudes creates a challenge for peaceful coexistence because communities may continue to experience social distance even when open violence is absent. This raises the need to examine mechanisms that can encourage positive relationships and reduce barriers between religious communities.

A second problem is that the existence of interfaith peace initiatives does not necessarily mean that peaceful coexistence has been fully achieved at the community level. Kaduna’s 2002 Peace Declaration represented an important commitment by Christian and Muslim religious leaders to mutual respect, cooperation and dialogue, but subsequent experience demonstrated that formal commitments alone could not eliminate the underlying causes of conflict. Musa (2016) argues that sustainable peace requires genuine dialogue that is inclusive and reciprocal, while Ojo and Orebiyi (2017) found that religious actors have an important role in implementing peace commitments and encouraging constructive conversations across religious boundaries. The gap, therefore, concerns whether interfaith activities are sufficiently regular, inclusive and effective to influence everyday relationships among residents in different communities.

Another problem relates to the nature of interfaith community activities themselves. Interfaith engagement can take several forms, including religious dialogue, joint development projects, peace education, youth programmes, women’s activities and collaborative humanitarian interventions. However, the effectiveness of these activities may vary according to who participates, the issues discussed, the level of community ownership and the extent to which activities involve ordinary residents rather than only religious or political elites. Research on interfaith peacebuilding in northern Nigeria has shown that efforts to localise peacebuilding programmes involve complex relationships between international organisations, local actors and communities, with local ownership and power relations affecting implementation (Ostby et al., 2020). Consequently, there is a need to examine the extent to which specific forms of interfaith community activity are associated with peaceful coexistence among residents in selected Kaduna communities rather than assuming that all interfaith programmes have the same effect.

The specific problem addressed by this study is the limited empirical evidence concerning the relationship between participation in interfaith community activities and peaceful coexistence at the grassroots level in Kaduna State. While existing research has documented Kaduna’s history of religious conflict, examined the Kaduna Peace Declaration and investigated broader peacebuilding efforts, less attention has been given to how residents themselves perceive the contribution of recurring community-level interfaith activities to tolerance, trust, cooperation and peaceful interaction. Recent scholarship confirms that peaceful Christian-Muslim relationships do exist in Nigeria and that community actors can contribute to preventing violence, but it also identifies the need for further empirical investigation of concrete peaceful relationships and their underlying mechanisms (Ossai, 2024). Therefore, this study will investigate the influence of interfaith community activities on peaceful coexistence in selected communities in Kaduna State, focusing specifically on interfaith dialogue, joint community development activities, peace education and collaborative community engagement.

1.3 Aim of the Study

The main aim of this study is to examine the influence of interfaith community activities on peaceful coexistence in selected communities in Kaduna State.

1.4 Objectives of the Study

The specific objectives are to:

  1. examine the influence of interfaith dialogue activities on peaceful coexistence in selected communities in Kaduna State;
  2. determine the influence of joint community development activities involving different religious groups on peaceful coexistence in selected communities in Kaduna State;
  3. assess the influence of interfaith peace education and awareness activities on peaceful coexistence in selected communities in Kaduna State; and
  4. examine the influence of collaborative interfaith activities involving religious leaders, youths, women and community organisations on peaceful coexistence in selected communities in Kaduna State.

1.5 Research Questions

The following research questions will guide the study:

  1. What is the influence of interfaith dialogue activities on peaceful coexistence in selected communities in Kaduna State?
  2. What is the influence of joint community development activities involving different religious groups on peaceful coexistence in selected communities in Kaduna State?
  3. What is the influence of interfaith peace education and awareness activities on peaceful coexistence in selected communities in Kaduna State?
  4. What is the influence of collaborative interfaith activities involving religious leaders, youths, women and community organisations on peaceful coexistence in selected communities in Kaduna State?

1.6 Research Hypothesis

The following null hypothesis will be tested at the 0.05 level of significance:

H₀: Interfaith community activities have no significant influence on peaceful coexistence in selected communities in Kaduna State.

1.7 Significance of the Study

The study will be significant to residents of Kaduna State because it will provide evidence concerning the possible contribution of interfaith activities to relationships among people from different religious communities. The findings may help residents understand the importance of constructive interaction, dialogue, cooperation and shared community activities in strengthening peaceful relationships.

The study will also be useful to religious leaders, including Christian and Muslim leaders, because it will provide information on the community-level activities that residents associate with peaceful coexistence. The findings may assist religious leaders in designing or strengthening programmes that encourage dialogue, mutual understanding, tolerance and cooperation across religious boundaries.

Government agencies responsible for peacebuilding, religious affairs and community development may also benefit from the findings. Evidence from the study may assist policymakers in evaluating community-level interfaith programmes and identifying areas where greater support, coordination or community participation may be required.

Non-governmental organisations, faith-based organisations and peacebuilding institutions may find the study useful in developing interventions for communities affected by religious tension. The findings may provide locally relevant information for designing dialogue programmes, peace education, youth engagement, women’s peace initiatives and joint community-development activities.

The study will also contribute to academic literature on religion, peacebuilding, community development and intergroup relations in Nigeria. Existing literature has documented both religious conflict and peaceful Christian-Muslim relations in Nigeria, but further empirical attention to community-level activities remains important. The study may therefore provide a basis for future research on interfaith cooperation and peaceful coexistence in Kaduna State and other religiously diverse Nigerian communities.

1.8 Scope of the Study

The study is geographically delimited to selected communities in Kaduna State, Nigeria. The study will focus on residents of the selected communities who have sufficient experience of community activities and intergroup relations.

Conceptually, the independent variable is interfaith community activities, measured through four dimensions: interfaith dialogue activities, joint community development activities, interfaith peace education and awareness, and collaborative activities involving religious leaders, youths, women and community organisations.

The dependent variable is peaceful coexistence, which will be examined in terms of mutual respect, religious tolerance, trust, cooperation, willingness to interact with members of other religious groups, peaceful conflict management and acceptance of religious diversity.

The study does not assume that religion is the sole cause of conflict or that interfaith activities alone can produce sustainable peace. Other factors, including political interests, economic conditions, ethnic identity, historical grievances, governance, security conditions and resource competition, may influence community relations. However, these factors are outside the principal scope of the present study.
