INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

The teachings of Jesus Christ remain central to the Christian faith and continue to shape the spiritual lives of believers across the world. Among His numerous teachings, forgiveness occupies a very significant position because it reflects the nature, mercy, and love of God toward humanity. Jesus consistently taught His followers the importance of forgiving others, showing compassion, and living in peace with one another. His teachings on forgiveness were not merely theoretical instructions but practical commands intended to transform the hearts and conduct of believers. According to Stott (2016), forgiveness is one of the strongest expressions of Christian love and an essential mark of spiritual maturity among believers.

Forgiveness in Christianity refers to the willingness to pardon offenses, release resentment, and reconcile with others despite wrongs committed. Jesus taught forgiveness as a divine obligation for every believer. In Matthew 6:14–15, Jesus emphasized that if believers forgive others, God will also forgive them, but failure to forgive may hinder their relationship with God. Furthermore, in Matthew 18:21–22, Jesus instructed Peter to forgive “seventy times seven,” symbolizing unlimited forgiveness. These teachings reveal that forgiveness is not optional in Christian living but a necessary condition for spiritual growth and healthy relationships within the church and society.

Spiritual maturity refers to the process through which believers grow in faith, obedience, character, and understanding of God’s word. Spiritually mature believers are expected to demonstrate Christ-like virtues such as love, humility, patience, mercy, peace, and forgiveness in their daily lives. Spiritual maturity involves transformation of the inner life, resulting in outward expressions of godly behavior and moral discipline. According to Willard (2014), spiritual maturity is the gradual development of Christ-like character through obedience to biblical teachings and the work of the Holy Spirit.

The teachings of Jesus on forgiveness contribute greatly to spiritual maturity because they help believers overcome bitterness, hatred, revenge, pride, and conflict. Forgiveness promotes emotional healing, peace of mind, reconciliation, and unity among Christians. When believers forgive others sincerely, they reflect the example of Christ, who forgave even those who crucified Him (Luke 23:34). Adeyemo (2015) explains that forgiveness is a vital requirement for maintaining healthy spiritual relationships and fostering unity within the body of Christ.

In contemporary Christianity, forgiveness remains one of the most challenging teachings for many believers to practice. Although Christians regularly hear sermons and Bible teachings on forgiveness, many still struggle with resentment, anger, hatred, and unresolved conflicts. Cases of church division, interpersonal conflicts, revenge, gossip, jealousy, and unforgiveness are still common among some believers. This suggests that many Christians may understand forgiveness intellectually but fail to apply it practically in their daily relationships.

Jesus’ teachings on forgiveness were intended to produce spiritually mature believers who would reflect God’s love and mercy in society. Through parables such as the Parable of the Unforgiving Servant (Matthew 18:23–35), Jesus demonstrated the seriousness of refusing to forgive others after receiving God’s forgiveness. These teachings challenge believers to let go of offenses and maintain peaceful relationships. According to Warren (2012), genuine spiritual maturity cannot exist where unforgiveness, bitterness, and hatred dominate the heart of a believer.

Furthermore, modern societal influences such as individualism, pride, materialism, social media conflicts, and moral decline have contributed to increasing cases of unforgiveness and broken relationships among Christians. Many believers find it difficult to forgive because of emotional pain, betrayal, pride, or fear of being hurt again. In some cases, church members carry unresolved bitterness for years despite regular church attendance and participation in spiritual activities. Such attitudes negatively affect spiritual growth and weaken Christian witness in society.

The church is expected to serve as a center for reconciliation, peace, love, and spiritual growth. Church leaders therefore have the responsibility of teaching and encouraging members to practice forgiveness as taught by Jesus Christ. Effective discipleship, counseling, and biblical teaching can help believers understand the spiritual importance of forgiveness and its role in developing Christ-like character. Hull (2014) notes that spiritual maturity becomes visible when believers consistently practice forgiveness, humility, and love toward others.

Despite the importance of forgiveness in Christianity, many believers still struggle with applying Jesus’ teachings in practical situations. This has raised concerns about the level of spiritual maturity among Christians and the effectiveness of biblical teachings in transforming believers’ attitudes and behaviors. Therefore, this study seeks to examine the influence of Jesus’ teachings on forgiveness and spiritual maturity among believers.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Jesus Christ taught forgiveness as one of the major principles of Christian living and spiritual growth. His teachings emphasized mercy, reconciliation, love for enemies, and willingness to pardon offenses. Believers are expected to practice forgiveness as evidence of genuine faith and spiritual maturity. However, despite the regular preaching and teaching of forgiveness in many churches today, unforgiveness, bitterness, hatred, and unresolved conflicts continue to exist among many Christians.

Many church members struggle to forgive those who offend them, especially in situations involving betrayal, misunderstanding, injustice, or emotional pain. Cases of church conflicts, family disputes, jealousy, revenge, gossip, and broken relationships are increasingly common among believers. Some Christians participate actively in church activities while still harboring resentment and bitterness against others. This contradiction between biblical teachings and practical Christian behavior raises concerns about the spiritual maturity of many believers.

Another problem is that some believers view forgiveness as a sign of weakness rather than spiritual strength. As a result, they prefer retaliation, avoidance, or prolonged resentment instead of reconciliation and peace. This attitude negatively affects unity within the church and weakens the testimony of Christians in society. In addition, societal influences such as pride, materialism, social media disputes, peer pressure, and declining moral values have contributed to increasing cases of unforgiveness among believers.

Furthermore, many churches today place greater emphasis on prosperity, miracles, and material success than on teachings related to forgiveness, reconciliation, humility, and spiritual character development. Consequently, some believers lack proper understanding of the spiritual significance of forgiveness and its role in Christian maturity. This has contributed to emotional instability, spiritual stagnation, church disunity, and weakened relationships among believers.

The inability of many Christians to practice forgiveness according to Jesus’ teachings suggests that spiritual maturity may not be fully developed among believers. Although previous studies have examined church growth and Christian living, limited attention has been given specifically to the influence of Jesus’ teachings on forgiveness and spiritual maturity among believers. There is therefore a need to investigate how Jesus’ teachings on forgiveness affect believers’ spiritual development, relationships, and commitment to Christian values.

This study is therefore undertaken to evaluate the influence of Jesus’ teachings on forgiveness and spiritual maturity among believers and to identify factors affecting the practical application of forgiveness in contemporary Christianity.

1.3 Purpose of the Study

The main purpose of this study is to examine the influence of Jesus’ teachings on forgiveness and spiritual maturity among believers.

The specific objectives of the study are to:

1. examine the teachings of Jesus concerning forgiveness among believers;
2. determine the extent to which believers practice forgiveness in their daily relationships;
3. identify factors affecting believers’ ability to forgive others;
4. examine the relationship between forgiveness and spiritual maturity among believers;
5. suggest possible ways of improving forgiveness and spiritual maturity among Christians.

1.4 Research Questions

The following research questions will guide the study:

1. What teachings of Jesus promote forgiveness among believers?
2. To what extent do believers practice forgiveness in their daily relationships?
3. What factors affect believers’ ability to forgive others?
4. What is the relationship between forgiveness and spiritual maturity among believers?
5. How can forgiveness and spiritual maturity be improved among Christians?

1.5 Significance of the Study

This study will be beneficial to pastors, church leaders, Christian counselors, theology students, church members, and future researchers.

Pastors and church leaders will benefit from the findings of this study by gaining better understanding of the importance of forgiveness in promoting spiritual maturity and unity within the church. The study will help them develop effective teaching and counseling strategies that encourage reconciliation among believers.

Christian counselors will benefit from the study by understanding the spiritual and emotional importance of forgiveness in resolving conflicts and improving relationships among believers.

Theology students and Christian educators will find the study useful as academic material for understanding the relationship between Jesus’ teachings, forgiveness, and spiritual maturity. The study will also contribute to existing literature on Christian discipleship and spiritual development.

Church members will benefit by gaining deeper understanding of the importance of forgiveness in Christian living and spiritual growth. The study will encourage believers to practice forgiveness, humility, peace, and reconciliation in their relationships with others.

Future researchers will also benefit from this work as it will serve as reference material for further studies related to forgiveness, Christian maturity, and discipleship.

1.6 Scope of the Study

This study focuses on the influence of Jesus’ teachings on forgiveness and spiritual maturity among believers. The study examines biblical teachings on forgiveness, their influence on believers’ spiritual lives and relationships, factors affecting forgiveness among Christians, and the role of forgiveness in spiritual maturity. The study is limited to selected churches and church members within the study area.

1.7 Operational Definition of Terms

Influence

Influence refers to the effect or impact of one thing on another.

Jesus’ Teachings

Jesus’ teachings refer to the instructions, doctrines, and principles taught by Jesus Christ as recorded in the Holy Bible.

Forgiveness

Forgiveness refers to the willingness to pardon offenses, release resentment, and reconcile with others.

Spiritual Maturity

Spiritual maturity refers to the growth and development of believers toward Christ-like character and godly living.

Believers

Believers are Christians who accept and follow the teachings of Jesus Christ.
