Project – The Influence of Product Packaging on Consumer Purchase Behaviour: A Study of Selected Beverage Brands among Consumers in Enugu Metropolis

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

Product packaging has evolved from being primarily a means of protecting, containing and transporting products to becoming an important marketing and communication instrument. In contemporary markets, packaging performs both functional and promotional roles by providing information, differentiating products and communicating attributes of a brand to consumers. The package is often one of the first elements that consumers encounter when examining products at the point of purchase, particularly where several competing brands offer similar products. Packaging can therefore influence consumers’ perceptions of product quality, brand identity, convenience and value. Underwood, Klein and Burke (2001) established that product imagery on packaging can increase consumers’ attention to a brand, particularly for brands with relatively low familiarity. Similarly, Gelici-Zeko, Lutters and ten Klooster (2013) found that packaging design features can influence consumers’ perceptions of food products and provide useful cues for understanding how products are evaluated.

The influence of packaging on consumer behaviour is particularly important because consumers frequently make product evaluations under conditions of limited time and information. Elements such as colour, shape, size, material, typography, graphics, images and labelling can provide consumers with visual and informational cues before the product itself is consumed. Packaging can consequently create expectations concerning taste, quality, safety, convenience and product performance. Silayoi and Speece (2007) explained that packaging communicates information through both visual and informational elements and that these elements can affect consumers’ purchasing decisions. More recent research also indicates that packaging design can shape product evaluation and purchase-related responses, although the effect may vary according to product category and consumer context (Van Rompay, Deterink, & Fenko, 2016). Thus, packaging is not merely an external covering but can form part of the consumer’s interpretation of the product and its expected benefits.

The beverage industry provides a particularly relevant context for examining packaging because consumers are confronted with numerous competing products that may have similar functional characteristics. Soft drinks, malt beverages, fruit drinks, energy drinks, bottled water and other beverages are commonly presented in bottles, cans, sachets and other forms of packaging, with differences in colour, shape, size, labels and graphic presentation. Because many beverage products compete for attention in retail outlets, packaging may serve as a means through which manufacturers distinguish their brands from competing alternatives. Van Dam and Van Trijp (1994), in their study of consumer perceptions of beverage containers, demonstrated that consumers consider packaging-related attributes in forming preferences, although the importance attached to particular attributes may differ according to the beverage and the consumer’s perceived benefits. This makes packaging an important consideration in understanding beverage purchase behaviour.

Consumer purchase behaviour refers to the processes through which individuals recognise needs, search for information, evaluate alternatives, select products, make purchases and subsequently evaluate their consumption experiences. In a competitive consumer market, purchase behaviour can be affected by product characteristics, price, availability, brand reputation, promotional activities, perceived quality and packaging. Product packaging may be particularly influential where consumers encounter products directly at the point of purchase and must select among competing alternatives. Waheed, Khan and Ahmad (2018) found that product packaging had a significant effect on consumer purchase intentions and identified packaging material, colour, font style, design and printed information as relevant packaging dimensions. Yeo and Tan (2020) similarly examined product packaging and customers’ purchase intention and provided empirical evidence that packaging characteristics can contribute to consumers’ purchase-related responses. These findings indicate that packaging can constitute an important external product cue in the consumer decision-making process.

In Nigeria, the relevance of packaging has increased alongside the growth of competition within consumer-goods markets. Beverage manufacturers compete not only through taste, price and distribution but also through brand presentation and product differentiation. Consumers are exposed to several local and international beverage brands, making it necessary for manufacturers to communicate product identity effectively at the point of sale. Research conducted in Nigeria has demonstrated that packaging can influence consumer choice. For example, Paul, Atose, Lukman and Mohammed (2020), in a study of consumers in Keffi, Nasarawa State, found that packaging was relevant to consumers’ purchasing decisions for consumable and non-consumable products. Similarly, Agbaeze, Nnabuko, Ifediora and Ekoja (2017), in a study of beverage-food drinks in Enugu State, found that factors including product availability, quality, brand loyalty, promotion and packaging affected consumer patronage of beverage products. These findings demonstrate that packaging deserves attention when examining consumer behaviour within the Nigerian beverage market.

The relationship between packaging and consumer purchase behaviour is particularly significant in Enugu Metropolis because previous empirical research has already demonstrated the relevance of packaging to beverage consumption within the area. Ewuzie, Achi and Arum (2024) specifically investigated packaging as a promotional tool for enhancing consumer preference for Coca-Cola products in Enugu Metropolis. The study examined distinctive shape and design, variant sizes and labelling and reported that these packaging dimensions significantly enhanced consumer preference for Coca-Cola products. In addition, Nwankwo, Ogbodo, Ogbunuju and Alex (2025) investigated factors influencing consumers’ preference for green packaging in Enugu Metropolis and examined consumers’ responses to recycled-labelled products, eco-labelled products and environmental advertising. These studies indicate that consumers in Enugu are exposed to packaging-related cues that may affect their perceptions and preferences, while also suggesting that packaging is increasingly connected with issues of product differentiation, environmental consciousness and consumer choice.

Despite the growing recognition of packaging as a marketing instrument, the influence of individual packaging attributes on actual consumer purchase behaviour may differ across products, brands and consumer groups. Packaging may attract attention without necessarily resulting in purchase because consumers can simultaneously consider price, taste, product quality, brand reputation, availability and personal preferences. For instance, Idoko, Nwaizugbo, Nkamnebe and Okoye (2021) examined intrinsic and extrinsic product cues among alcoholic beverage consumers in a developing-country metropolitan setting and found that different product cues did not have identical effects on purchase intention. Similarly, research on beverage patronage in Enugu State found that packaging operated alongside other factors such as product quality, availability, price, brand loyalty, promotion and taste. Therefore, examining packaging specifically among beverage consumers in Enugu Metropolis is necessary to establish how packaging characteristics such as design, colour, size, material and labelling relate to consumer purchase behaviour within the local market.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The beverage market in Nigeria is characterised by considerable competition among brands offering similar categories of products. As consumers encounter several beverage alternatives, manufacturers increasingly need to differentiate their products and communicate value effectively. Packaging provides one avenue through which such differentiation can occur, yet the presence of attractive packaging does not automatically guarantee consumer purchase. Consumers may interpret packaging differently depending on their experiences, preferences, income, product knowledge and perceptions of quality. Gelici-Zeko, Lutters and ten Klooster (2013) observed that packaging design can affect product perceptions and buying behaviour, while Van Rompay, Deterink and Fenko (2016) demonstrated that the effect of packaging appearance can vary according to the purchasing context. The problem, therefore, is to establish the extent to which packaging actually influences consumer purchase behaviour rather than assuming that packaging attractiveness automatically produces purchase.

A further problem concerns the numerous packaging attributes employed by beverage manufacturers and the difficulty of determining which attributes are most relevant to consumers. Beverage brands use different colours, package shapes, sizes, materials, labels, graphics and product information to distinguish themselves from competitors. However, consumers may not attach equal importance to all these features. Waheed, Khan and Ahmad (2018) found that packaging material, colour, font style, design and printed information could influence purchase intentions, while Holmes and Paswan (2012) found that consumers’ experiences with packaging influenced their attitudes towards the package and their expectations of product quality. This suggests that different packaging characteristics may operate through different mechanisms and that manufacturers need empirical evidence to understand which features are associated with consumer purchase behaviour.

There is also a location-specific research problem concerning beverage consumers in Enugu Metropolis. Although studies have investigated consumer patronage of beverages in Enugu State and packaging as a promotional tool for Coca-Cola products in Enugu Metropolis, these studies do not completely address the broader question of how different packaging dimensions influence consumer purchase behaviour across selected beverage brands. Agbaeze et al. (2017) found that packaging, product quality, availability, brand loyalty, promotion and other factors influenced beverage patronage in Enugu State. More recently, Ewuzie, Achi and Arum (2024) examined distinctive packaging shape and design, variant sizes and labelling in relation to Coca-Cola consumer preference in Enugu Metropolis. While these studies provide useful evidence, there remains a need to investigate packaging and consumer purchase behaviour in relation to selected beverage brands rather than concentrating on a single brand or examining general beverage patronage.

The central problem addressed by this study is therefore the need to determine whether and to what extent product packaging influences consumer purchase behaviour among consumers of selected beverage brands in Enugu Metropolis. In particular, there is a need to examine whether packaging design and appearance, packaging colour, packaging size and shape, and packaging information and labelling influence consumers’ decisions to purchase beverage products. This is important because packaging represents a substantial component of product presentation and may influence how consumers perceive and evaluate competing brands at the point of purchase. Existing evidence indicates that packaging can affect consumer preference and purchase-related responses, but the strength and nature of such effects can vary by product category and context. Consequently, empirical evidence from selected beverage brands in Enugu Metropolis is required to provide a clearer understanding of the relationship between product packaging and consumer purchase behaviour (Ewuzie et al., 2024; Yeo & Tan, 2020).

1.3 Aim and Objectives of the Study

The main aim of this study is to examine the influence of product packaging on consumer purchase behaviour among consumers of selected beverage brands in Enugu Metropolis.

The specific objectives are to:

  1. examine the influence of packaging design and appearance on consumer purchase behaviour among consumers of selected beverage brands in Enugu Metropolis;
  2. determine the influence of packaging colour on consumer purchase behaviour among consumers of selected beverage brands in Enugu Metropolis;
  3. assess the influence of packaging size and shape on consumer purchase behaviour among consumers of selected beverage brands in Enugu Metropolis; and
  4. examine the influence of packaging information and labelling on consumer purchase behaviour among consumers of selected beverage brands in Enugu Metropolis.

1.4 Research Questions

The following research questions will guide the study:

  1. To what extent does packaging design and appearance influence consumer purchase behaviour among consumers of selected beverage brands in Enugu Metropolis?
  2. What influence does packaging colour have on consumer purchase behaviour among consumers of selected beverage brands in Enugu Metropolis?
  3. To what extent do packaging size and shape influence consumer purchase behaviour among consumers of selected beverage brands in Enugu Metropolis?
  4. What influence does packaging information and labelling have on consumer purchase behaviour among consumers of selected beverage brands in Enugu Metropolis?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

The following null hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance:

H₀: Product packaging has no statistically significant influence on consumer purchase behaviour among consumers of selected beverage brands in Enugu Metropolis.

1.6 Significance of the Study

The study will be significant to beverage manufacturers because it will provide empirical information concerning the packaging attributes that consumers consider when making purchasing decisions. The findings may assist manufacturers in designing packages that communicate product information effectively and differentiate their brands from competing beverage products.

The study will also be useful to marketing managers and brand managers in the beverage industry. Information obtained from the study may help marketing professionals understand the role of packaging in attracting consumers, communicating brand identity and influencing purchase behaviour. The findings may assist managers in making informed decisions concerning packaging design, colour, size, shape and labelling.

The study will benefit consumers because it will draw attention to the ways in which packaging characteristics can affect perceptions and purchase behaviour. Understanding these influences may encourage consumers to consider substantive product characteristics such as quality, ingredients, safety, value and product information alongside packaging appearance when making purchasing decisions.

The study will also be useful to retailers and distributors of beverage products. Since packaging can contribute to product visibility and differentiation at points of sale, retailers may benefit from understanding how consumers respond to different package characteristics. Such knowledge may assist retailers in product presentation and shelf arrangement.

The study will be relevant to students, researchers and academics in marketing, business administration and consumer behaviour. It will provide additional empirical evidence concerning product packaging and consumer purchase behaviour, particularly within the Nigerian beverage industry and the Enugu Metropolis context.

Finally, the study may provide a basis for further research on packaging, consumer behaviour, brand preference, purchase intention and product differentiation. It may also complement existing Enugu-based research on beverage patronage and packaging by providing a broader examination of packaging attributes across selected beverage brands.

1.7 Scope of the Study

The study focuses on the influence of product packaging on consumer purchase behaviour among consumers of selected beverage brands in Enugu Metropolis.

The independent variable of the study is product packaging, operationalised through packaging design and appearance, packaging colour, packaging size and shape, and packaging information and labelling. The dependent variable is consumer purchase behaviour, which will be considered in terms of purchase decision, product selection, purchase frequency, willingness to purchase and preference for packaged beverage products.

Geographically, the study is restricted to Enugu Metropolis, Enugu State, Nigeria. The study will focus on consumers of selected beverage brands within the metropolis. The selected brands may include widely consumed soft drinks, malt drinks, fruit beverages or other packaged beverage categories, depending on the final sampling framework adopted for the study.
