CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Christianity has undergone significant transformation in Africa, particularly through the rapid expansion of Pentecostal and Charismatic movements. Among the distinctive features of contemporary Pentecostal Christianity are the emphasis on the Holy Spirit, spiritual gifts, divine healing, deliverance, speaking in tongues, prayer, prophecy and the expectation of direct divine intervention in human affairs. Pentecostalism has therefore become an important expression of Christian spirituality in many African societies. Kalu (2008) observes that African Pentecostalism has developed distinctive forms that reflect African religious experiences while maintaining strong Christian commitments to the work of the Holy Spirit. In this environment, supernatural experiences are frequently integrated into worship, preaching, prayer and personal religious identity.

The growth of Pentecostal Christianity has also significantly altered the religious landscape of Nigeria. Nigeria has one of the largest Christian populations in Africa, and Pentecostal-Charismatic churches constitute a highly visible component of contemporary Nigerian Christianity. Recent demographic estimates indicate that Nigeria’s Christian population grew substantially between 2010 and 2020, demonstrating the continuing importance of Christianity within the country’s religious landscape. The development of Pentecostal churches in Nigeria has been associated with innovative forms of worship, evangelism, media utilisation, prayer ministries, healing services and an emphasis on personal encounters with God. Diara and Onah (2014) argue that the phenomenal growth of Pentecostalism has challenged established Christian denominations and influenced the way churches approach worship and membership development.

One of the most prominent dimensions of Pentecostal spirituality is the belief in the continuing operation of spiritual gifts. The New Testament identifies prophecy among the gifts associated with the ministry of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:4–11; Romans 12:6–8). Paul further encourages believers to desire spiritual gifts, particularly prophecy, because prophecy can contribute to the strengthening, encouragement and comfort of the Christian community (1 Corinthians 14:1–5). Consequently, Pentecostal churches generally regard prophetic ministry as an important avenue through which God’s message, guidance, encouragement and correction may be communicated to believers.

Prophetic ministry in this study refers broadly to the exercise of what Pentecostal Christians understand as prophetic gifts through prophetic utterances, words of knowledge, visions, dreams, spiritual discernment, prophetic prayer and declarations believed to communicate divine direction. The biblical understanding of prophecy, however, is broader than merely predicting future events. Prophecy can involve proclaiming God’s will, confronting wrongdoing, encouraging believers and communicating a message believed to be inspired by the Holy Spirit. The Apostle Paul specifically indicates that prophecy should edify, exhort and comfort the church (1 Corinthians 14:3). This theological understanding is important because it places prophetic ministry within the broader purposes of Christian formation rather than reducing it to prediction or supernatural spectacle.

In contemporary Nigerian Christianity, however, prophetic ministry has assumed particularly prominent forms. Prophetic declarations may occur during Sunday services, prayer meetings, revival programmes, deliverance services and special prophetic conferences. Individuals may seek prophetic words concerning marriage, employment, business, health, family difficulties, academic pursuits, spiritual warfare and other personal circumstances. Bobai (2025), examining prophetic practices in Nigeria through an exegetical-theological approach, notes that references to prophetic declarations, prophetic prayer and prophetic unction are commonplace in Nigerian religious discourse. He argues that contemporary prophetic practices require careful theological evaluation so that claims concerning divine revelation remain consistent with biblical teaching.

The prominence of prophetic ministry is partly connected to the experiential character of Pentecostal spirituality. Pentecostal Christianity generally emphasises an immediate and experiential relationship with God through the Holy Spirit. This spirituality encourages believers to expect divine intervention in their daily lives rather than viewing Christianity exclusively through formal doctrines or institutional practices. Chan (2011) argues that Pentecostal spirituality should not be understood merely through isolated experiences such as speaking in tongues; rather, Pentecostal faith needs to be understood as a comprehensive Christian spiritual tradition involving the formation of believers and the life of the church.

Christian spirituality itself concerns the manner in which believers understand, experience and live out their relationship with God. It includes prayer, worship, biblical study, holiness, discipleship, fellowship, service and the practical expression of Christian faith. A healthy Christian spirituality should therefore produce transformation in character and conduct. Galatians 5:22–23 identifies the fruit of the Spirit as including love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. From this perspective, prophetic ministry should ideally contribute to the spiritual maturity of believers rather than merely provide exciting religious experiences.

The relationship between prophetic ministry and Christian spirituality is therefore an important theological question. Prophetic ministry can potentially strengthen spirituality when it encourages believers to seek God, study Scripture, develop prayer lives, repent from sinful practices and remain committed to Christian fellowship. A prophetic message that directs a believer towards God, encourages faith and reinforces biblical principles may become an important instrument of spiritual formation. Likewise, prophetic prayer and ministry may create opportunities for believers to interpret their personal experiences within a Christian framework.

At the same time, the influence of prophetic ministry on spirituality cannot automatically be assumed to be positive. Where prophetic practices become excessively personality-centred, sensational or materialistic, they may create forms of spirituality that are dependent on the prophetic personality rather than on God and Scripture. Ukah (2018) observes that Nigerian Pentecostal-Charismatic movements have developed highly visible worship styles characterised by emphases on spiritual power, miracles and material well-being, while some expressions of the movement are also influenced by competitive and commercialised religious practices. This raises questions about whether some forms of prophetic Christianity encourage mature discipleship or instead create dependency on prophetic personalities.

The issue of prophetic authority is particularly significant. In a Pentecostal context, the prophetic minister may be perceived as possessing unusual spiritual sensitivity or access to divine revelation. Such perceptions can generate strong trust between the minister and members. When exercised responsibly, prophetic authority may provide pastoral encouragement and spiritual guidance. However, when prophetic authority is treated as unquestionable, members may become reluctant to evaluate prophetic claims against Scripture or other forms of Christian discernment. The New Testament itself places prophetic utterances within a context of communal discernment. Paul instructs believers to allow others to evaluate prophetic messages (1 Corinthians 14:29), while 1 Thessalonians 5:20–21 encourages Christians not to despise prophecies but to test everything and hold firmly to what is good.

The Nigerian Pentecostal environment makes this issue especially relevant because of the importance attached to spiritual power. Ukah (2008), in his study of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, demonstrates how Pentecostal power, organisational structures, religious authority and changing forms of Christian practice have contributed to the development of contemporary Nigerian Pentecostalism. His work illustrates the importance of examining Pentecostal Christianity not simply as a theological phenomenon but also as a social and organisational reality.

Another significant issue associated with prophetic ministry is the attraction and retention of church members. Churches do not merely seek to attract people; they also seek to cultivate committed communities in which members participate regularly, develop relationships, receive pastoral care and remain attached to the church’s mission. In Pentecostal settings, prophetic ministry may contribute to this process because members may perceive the church as a place where their spiritual and personal concerns receive attention. A person who experiences encouragement, prayer, perceived divine guidance or a sense of spiritual belonging through prophetic ministry may develop stronger attachment to the congregation.

Church membership retention refers to the capacity of a congregation to maintain the continued participation and commitment of its members over time. Retention may be reflected in regular worship attendance, participation in church programmes, involvement in ministries, commitment to church activities, financial support, fellowship and willingness to remain within the congregation. Retention is therefore different from numerical church growth. A congregation may attract large numbers of visitors and new converts but experience difficulty retaining them if members do not develop meaningful spiritual, relational and organisational connections.

The relationship between spirituality and retention is important because members who perceive that a church contributes meaningfully to their spiritual development may be more likely to remain committed to it. Pentecostal churches frequently provide multiple avenues for spiritual participation, including prayer meetings, Bible studies, worship services, deliverance programmes, counselling and prophetic ministries. These activities may create a strong sense of religious community. Chan (2011) argues that Pentecostal ecclesiology needs to take seriously the formation of a community rather than concentrating exclusively on individual religious experiences.

Prophetic ministry may consequently operate as both a spiritual and congregational mechanism. At the individual level, it may give members a sense of divine attention and spiritual encouragement. At the congregational level, prophetic services can become highly attended events that reinforce collective identity. When members perceive that their church provides an environment where spiritual gifts operate and where their personal concerns are taken seriously, such perceptions may strengthen their attachment to the congregation.

The influence of prophetic ministry on retention may nevertheless be complex. Some members may remain because they have developed genuine spiritual relationships and biblical commitment, while others may remain primarily because of expectations of miracles, prophetic revelations or solutions to personal problems. These different motivations have implications for the quality and durability of church membership. A person who remains in a church because of a strong commitment to Christ and Christian community may exhibit a different pattern of retention from a person who remains because he or she expects a particular prophetic prediction to be fulfilled.

This distinction is especially important in a religious environment where miracles, prosperity and prophetic declarations are highly visible. Ukah (2018) notes that Nigerian Pentecostal-Charismatic formations combine spiritual practices with aspirations concerning empowerment, miracles and material well-being, while also operating within competitive religious environments. Similarly, Ukah (2011) links contemporary Nigerian Pentecostalism with broader economic and social transformations and demonstrates how Pentecostal religious organisations can function as important sites of economic and social mobilisation.

The possibility of manipulation therefore constitutes an important concern. Prophetic ministry can become problematic when spiritual authority is used to control members, extract money, create fear or establish excessive loyalty to a particular minister. Theological concerns arise when prophetic claims are presented as equivalent to Scripture or when members are discouraged from questioning questionable practices. Contemporary scholarship on Nigerian prophetic practices has consequently called for greater theological discernment and critical reflection. Bobai (2025), for example, highlights the need to examine contemporary Nigerian prophetic practices carefully in the light of biblical teaching.

This does not mean that prophetic ministry should be regarded as inherently manipulative or harmful. Such a conclusion would overlook the central place that spiritual gifts occupy within Pentecostal theology. Kalu (2008) notes that Pentecostal believers understand spiritual gifts such as prophecy as part of the continuing activity of the Holy Spirit in the Christian community. The appropriate scholarly question is therefore not whether prophecy is automatically beneficial or harmful, but how prophetic ministry influences the spirituality and continued membership of Christians within particular congregational contexts.

The geographical setting of the present study is Aba South Local Government Area of Abia State. Aba South forms part of the Aba urban area, an important commercial and industrial centre in southeastern Nigeria. Available geographical information identifies Aba South as one of the 17 Local Government Areas of Abia State and places its headquarters within Aba. The urban character of Aba creates a religious environment in which numerous churches and Christian ministries operate alongside a large and diverse population.

The social and economic character of Aba provides a significant context for examining Pentecostal Christianity. As a commercial city, Aba attracts people from different backgrounds and creates a setting in which individuals encounter diverse religious organisations. Pentecostal churches therefore operate within an environment characterised by competition for attention, membership and participation. The availability of different churches may enable Christians to move from one congregation to another depending on their perceptions of worship, pastoral care, spiritual experiences, prophetic ministry and other factors.

Aba South is therefore an appropriate setting for investigating the relationship between prophetic ministry, Christian spirituality and church membership retention. The study can provide an opportunity to determine whether prophetic ministry actually contributes to deeper Christian spirituality and sustained membership or whether its influence is primarily associated with short-term attraction and attendance.

The subject is particularly significant because the growth of Pentecostal churches should not be evaluated solely in terms of the number of people attending services. Uroko (2024) notes that the growth of Pentecostal churches in Nigeria involves strategies through which churches attract members from other Christian traditions. Sustainable Christian ministry, however, requires more than attracting people. It requires nurturing believers, developing discipleship, encouraging spiritual maturity and building communities in which members can maintain meaningful relationships with God and other Christians.

Recent scholarship further demonstrates that Nigerian Pentecostalism remains a dynamic field of theological and sociological investigation. Oyewole (2022), for instance, observes the continuing influence of Pentecostal pneumatology on Nigerian Christianity, particularly through teachings concerning the Holy Spirit and spiritual gifts. Such developments suggest that the study of prophetic ministry should consider both its theological significance and its practical consequences for congregational life.

It is against this background that this study investigates the influence of prophetic ministry on Christian spirituality and church membership retention among selected Pentecostal churches in Aba South Local Government Area, Abia State. The study seeks to establish whether prophetic ministry contributes to believers’ prayer lives, biblical engagement, worship, spiritual commitment and Christian conduct, and whether such spiritual experiences are associated with members’ willingness to remain within their congregations.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Prophetic ministry occupies an increasingly prominent position in contemporary Pentecostal Christianity. In many Pentecostal congregations, prophetic declarations, words of knowledge, visions, dreams, prophetic prayers and messages concerning members’ personal circumstances have become important elements of worship. The continuing prominence of these practices reflects the Pentecostal conviction that the Holy Spirit remains active in the contemporary church and continues to distribute spiritual gifts among believers.

However, the increasing prominence of prophetic ministry has generated important questions concerning its actual contribution to Christian spirituality. Ideally, prophetic ministry should direct believers towards God, encourage obedience to Scripture, strengthen faith, promote repentance and contribute to spiritual maturity. Paul describes prophecy as something intended to strengthen, encourage and comfort the church (1 Corinthians 14:3). If prophetic ministry fulfils these purposes, its practice should be reflected in deeper prayer, stronger biblical commitment, improved Christian character and greater participation in the life of the church.

The problem is that the visibility of prophetic activities does not necessarily demonstrate the presence of mature Christian spirituality. A congregation may have frequent prophetic programmes while some members remain weak in Bible study, personal prayer, Christian character and commitment to discipleship. There is therefore a need to distinguish between religious excitement generated by prophetic activities and genuine spiritual transformation produced through Christian discipleship. Chan (2011) emphasises the need for Pentecostal spirituality to be understood as a broader Christian spiritual tradition rather than as a collection of isolated supernatural experiences.

A further problem concerns the possibility of excessive dependence on prophetic ministers. In some Pentecostal settings, the prophet or pastor may become the primary focus of members’ religious expectations. Instead of developing confidence in Scripture, prayer and personal spiritual discernment, members may continually seek prophetic instructions concerning virtually every aspect of life. Such dependence can raise questions concerning Christian maturity and the appropriate relationship between ministerial authority, Scripture and individual responsibility.

There is also concern about the commercialisation of some forms of Pentecostal ministry. Nigerian Pentecostal scholarship has documented the relationship between religious practices, economic aspirations, material well-being and competitive religious organisations. Ukah (2018) notes that Nigerian Pentecostal-Charismatic formations may combine spiritual aspirations with material desires and commercial practices. This creates a potential problem when prophetic ministry becomes associated with financial expectations, special offerings or claims that particular financial contributions are necessary to receive divine intervention.

Another problem concerns the authenticity and discernment of prophetic claims. Contemporary Nigerian religious discourse contains numerous references to prophetic declarations, prophetic prayer and prophetic unction, but not every claim presented as prophecy can automatically be assumed to represent genuine biblical prophecy. Bobai (2025) argues that prophetic practices in Nigeria require critical theological assessment, particularly because prophetic language can be used in ways that depart from sound biblical understanding. The existence of such concerns makes it necessary to investigate how ordinary church members perceive prophetic ministry and what effects it actually has on their spiritual lives.

The issue of church membership retention presents another problem. Pentecostal churches in Nigeria have experienced significant expansion, but numerical growth does not automatically translate into long-term membership stability. Uroko (2024) demonstrates that Pentecostal churches have developed approaches that attract members from other Christian traditions, showing that movement between churches is an important feature of the Nigerian religious environment. In an environment where members can easily encounter different churches offering similar programmes, the factors that make Christians remain in a particular congregation deserve investigation.

Prophetic ministry may be one such factor. Members who believe that prophetic services provide spiritual direction, encouragement, healing, deliverance or solutions to personal challenges may develop strong attachment to the congregation. On the other hand, members who experience unfulfilled prophetic claims, manipulation, excessive financial demands or disappointment may become dissatisfied and eventually leave. Thus, prophetic ministry may have both positive and negative implications for membership retention depending on how it is practised and experienced.

The problem is further complicated by the fact that church retention should not be interpreted simply as keeping people in church through emotional or psychological attachment. Theologically, meaningful retention should involve continued commitment to Christ, participation in Christian fellowship, spiritual growth and service. A member who remains in church solely because of the expectation of a miracle or a personal prophetic word may not necessarily demonstrate the same form of Christian commitment as a member whose continued participation results from spiritual maturity and integration into the church community.

Despite extensive scholarship on Pentecostalism in Nigeria, there remains a need for more context-specific investigation of the relationship between prophetic ministry, Christian spirituality and membership retention at the local congregational level. Major studies have examined Nigerian Pentecostalism from historical, theological, organisational, economic and sociological perspectives (Kalu, 2008; Ukah, 2008, 2011, 2018), while more recent scholarship has examined prophetic practices and Pentecostal growth. However, the specific relationship among prophetic ministry, Christian spirituality and church membership retention in selected Pentecostal churches in Aba South LGA requires further empirical attention.

The central problem, therefore, is that while prophetic ministry is widely practised and may be an important attraction within Pentecostal churches, its actual influence on the spiritual development of members and their decision to remain within a congregation is not sufficiently established in the specific context of Aba South Local Government Area. This study consequently seeks to determine whether prophetic ministry significantly influences Christian spirituality and church membership retention among members of selected Pentecostal churches in the area.

1.3 Purpose of the Study

The main purpose of this study is to examine the influence of prophetic ministry on Christian spirituality and church membership retention among selected Pentecostal churches in Aba South Local Government Area, Abia State.

Specifically, the study seeks to:

  1. examine the nature and forms of prophetic ministry practised in selected Pentecostal churches in Aba South LGA;
  2. determine the influence of prophetic ministry on the Christian spirituality of members of selected Pentecostal churches;
  3. examine the relationship between prophetic ministry and members’ commitment to church activities;
  4. determine the influence of prophetic ministry on church membership retention;

1.4 Research Questions

The following research questions will guide the study:

  1. What are the major forms of prophetic ministry practised in selected Pentecostal churches in Aba South LGA?
  2. To what extent does prophetic ministry influence the Christian spirituality of members of selected Pentecostal churches?
  3. What relationship exists between prophetic ministry and members’ participation in church activities?
  4. To what extent does prophetic ministry influence church membership retention?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

The following null hypothesis will be tested at 0.05 level of significance:

H₀: There is no significant relationship between prophetic ministry and church membership retention among members of selected Pentecostal churches in Aba South Local Government Area, Abia State.

1.6 Significance of the Study

The study will be significant to Pentecostal church leaders and ministers because it will provide empirical information about how members perceive prophetic ministry and how such ministry affects their spiritual lives and continued participation in the church. The findings may help pastors and prophetic ministers develop practices that emphasise biblical integrity, spiritual maturity, pastoral responsibility and genuine Christian discipleship.

The study will also be useful to church members. By examining the relationship between prophetic ministry and Christian spirituality, the research may encourage members to evaluate prophetic experiences in relation to Scripture, Christian character and spiritual growth. This may contribute to a more balanced understanding of prophecy within Pentecostal Christianity.

The study will benefit Pentecostal denominations and church administrators by providing information that may assist them in developing appropriate guidelines for prophetic ministry. Such guidelines can help promote responsible exercise of spiritual gifts while discouraging practices that may undermine members’ spiritual well-being or create unhealthy dependence on individual ministers.

The study will be valuable to theological educators and Bible scholars because it addresses the relationship between a classical Pentecostal doctrine—the operation of spiritual gifts—and contemporary congregational life. The study may contribute to discussions concerning prophecy, pneumatology, Christian spirituality, ecclesiology and Pentecostal ministry.

The research will also be useful to students and future researchers in theology, religious studies, Christian education and related disciplines. It will provide a local empirical framework for examining prophetic ministry beyond broad discussions of Nigerian Pentecostalism.

Finally, the study may be significant to Pentecostal churches in Aba South LGA because its findings can help church leaders understand whether prophetic ministry is contributing to sustainable membership or merely attracting temporary participation. This distinction is important for churches interested in developing spiritually mature and committed Christian communities.

1.7 Scope of the Study

The study is limited to the influence of prophetic ministry on Christian spirituality and church membership retention.

Geographically, the study will be conducted in selected Pentecostal churches in Aba South Local Government Area, Abia State, Nigeria.

The study will focus on adult members of the selected churches, including male and female members who have sufficient experience of the churches’ prophetic activities to provide meaningful responses.

Conceptually, the study will examine prophetic ministry in terms of prophetic declarations, words of knowledge, prophetic prayers, visions, dreams, spiritual discernment and other forms of prophetic practice recognised within the selected Pentecostal churches.

Christian spirituality will be examined in relation to dimensions such as personal prayer, Bible study, worship, spiritual commitment, Christian conduct, participation in fellowship and perceived spiritual growth.

Church membership retention will be examined through indicators such as continued membership, regular worship attendance, participation in church activities, commitment to church programmes, involvement in ministries and intention to remain in the congregation.

The study will not attempt to determine whether individual prophetic claims are supernaturally genuine. Rather, it will investigate the perceived influence and observable relationship between prophetic ministry, Christian spirituality and membership retention among church members.

1.8 Delimitation of the Study

The study is delimited to selected Pentecostal churches rather than all Christian denominations in Aba South LGA. This delimitation is necessary because Pentecostal churches place particular theological emphasis on the continuing operation of spiritual gifts, including prophecy.

The study is also delimited to adult church members because they are expected to possess sufficient experience and independence to provide informed responses concerning their spiritual experiences and membership decisions.

Furthermore, the study concentrates on prophetic ministry rather than attempting to examine all dimensions of Pentecostal ministry. Other factors such as preaching, worship music, church administration, social welfare, youth programmes and financial management may influence spirituality and retention, but they are outside the principal focus of this study except where they are relevant to the interpretation of prophetic ministry.

1.9 Operational Definition of Terms
