INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
The global logistics and supply chain industry has witnessed profound transformation over the past few decades, largely driven by technological innovation and increasing consumer demand for fresh and high-quality products. Among the most notable advancements is the development and deployment of refrigerated containers, also known as reefer containers. These containers offer a controlled temperature environment that is essential for the preservation and transportation of perishable goods such as fruits, vegetables, dairy products, meat, seafood, and pharmaceuticals. The adoption of cold chain logistics has not only improved food safety but also reduced post-harvest losses and enabled global trade in temperature-sensitive commodities (Rodrigue & Notteboom, 2020).
Refrigerated containers are critical in ensuring that products retain their freshness and nutritional value from the point of origin to the final consumer. They are equipped with temperature control systems that maintain optimal conditions throughout the supply chain, even across long distances. These innovations have played a pivotal role in the globalization of food systems, facilitating year-round access to seasonal products and enhancing the efficiency of international trade. Such research can inform policy, guide investment decisions, and support the development of more resilient and efficient food and pharmaceutical supply chains in Cameroon and beyond.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
The transportation of perishable goods is a highly sensitive operation that requires strict control of temperature and time. In developed economies, the use of refrigerated containers has significantly improved logistics efficiency, reduced spoilage, and increased profitability. However, in Cameroon, and particularly in Douala—the hub of commercial and port activities—the use of refrigerated containers remains fraught with challenges. Despite their known benefits, inefficiencies continue to plague the system. Issues such as frequent equipment breakdowns, power supply instability, and inadequate maintenance culture compromise the effectiveness of cold chain logistics, leading to high levels of spoilage and wastage.

While these investments are commendable, they have not fully addressed the recurring operational constraints. The company still experiences difficulties maintaining optimal temperature settings throughout long-distance journeys. These challenges are further exacerbated by delays at ports and checkpoints, lack of trained personnel to handle reefer containers, and limited access to spare parts and repair services, which collectively diminish the reliability of the cold chain system.
Additionally, the lack of coordinated government support and poor enforcement of quality and safety standards have further hindered the effectiveness of refrigerated transport. Most small and medium-scale producers and exporters remain excluded from the benefits of modern cold chain systems due to cost and logistical barriers. As a result, large volumes of perishable goods spoil before reaching consumers, leading to financial losses, reduced food availability, and missed export opportunities. These systemic limitations suggest that despite the presence of modern technology, the enabling environment for its optimal use remains weak.
Moreover, a major issue compounding the problem is the scarcity of data-driven research on the influence of refrigerated containers in the Cameroonian logistics sector. Most of the available information is anecdotal or generalized, lacking empirical depth and specificity. This has resulted in a gap in understanding the real impact of reefer containers on transport efficiency, product integrity, and business performance. Without concrete data and analysis, companies like SFM Technologies and other stakeholders are unable to make informed decisions or advocate effectively for policy reforms.
Therefore, this study seeks to fill that gap by investigating the influence of refrigerated containers on the transport of perishable goods, with specific attention to the operations of SFM Technologies in Douala. The findings from this research will not only provide insights into how these containers are currently used and the extent of their effectiveness but also highlight the key challenges that must be addressed to improve cold chain logistics in Cameroon. Ultimately, the study aims to offer practical recommendations to enhance efficiency, reduce losses, and strengthen the competitiveness of Cameroon’s perishable goods sector.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The main objective of this study is to examine the influence of refrigerated containers on the transport of perishable goods in Douala, Cameroon.
Specific objectives include:
- To assess the effectiveness of refrigerated containers in preserving perishable goods during transportation.
- To examine the challenges encountered in the use of refrigerated containers at SFM Technologies.
- To evaluate the impact of refrigerated transport on the operational performance of SFM Technologies.

The study will test the following hypotheses:
- H₀: Refrigerated containers do not have a significant influence on the transport efficiency of perishable goods at SFM Technologies.
- H₁: Refrigerated containers significantly influence the transport efficiency of perishable goods at SFM Technologies.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study holds considerable importance for logistics companies operating in Cameroon, particularly those engaged in the transportation of perishable goods. For firms such as SFM Technologies, the research findings will provide critical insights into the operational strengths and weaknesses of their current refrigerated container systems. By focusing on Douala—a key logistics hub—and a major firm like SFM Technologies, the study provides context-specific data and analysis that can serve as a reference for future research in logistics, supply chain management, and agricultural development.
The study is also significant in the context of food security and public health. Inadequate cold chain logistics often lead to food spoilage, contamination, and loss of nutritional value. By identifying and addressing the gaps in refrigerated transport, the study contributes to reducing food loss and improving the overall quality of food available to consumers. This is particularly important in urban centers like Douala, where demand for fresh and safe food is on the rise, and where the consequences of food spoilage can have wide-reaching socio-economic effects.
Finally, international development organizations and donor agencies focusing on trade facilitation, rural development, and climate resilience may find the study useful in designing interventions. 1.7 Scope of the Study
Geographically, the study is limited to Douala, Cameroon, with a focus on SFM Technologies. Thematically, the study concentrates on the use of refrigerated containers in the transportation of perishable goods. It covers issues such as equipment effectiveness, operational challenges, and the resulting impact on product quality and logistics performance. The study period spans data from the past five years to capture recent trends and technological developments.
1.8 Limitations of the Study
Possible limitations include restricted access to confidential company data, time constraints, and a limited number of participants knowledgeable about cold chain operations. Additionally, due to the focus on a single company, the findings may not be fully generalizable to all logistics firms in Cameroon.
1.9 Operational Definition of Terms
Refrigerated Container (Reefer): A refrigerated container, commonly referred to as a “reefer,” is a specialized type of shipping container designed to transport temperature-sensitive goods under controlled conditions. It is equipped with a built-in refrigeration unit capable of maintaining specific temperature ranges suitable for the preservation of perishable products. These containers are used both in sea and land transportation and can store items at temperatures ranging from below freezing to slightly above ambient levels. In the context of this study, reefer containers are essential tools in cold chain logistics for transporting fresh produce, dairy, pharmaceuticals, and other perishables across short and long distances without compromising product quality.
Perishable Goods: Perishable goods refer to commodities—especially food items such as fruits, vegetables, dairy, seafood, and meat—that have a limited shelf life and are prone to spoilage or decay if not stored and transported under proper conditions. These goods require specific temperature and humidity levels to maintain their freshness and nutritional value from the point of production to the point of consumption.
