INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

In recent years, there has been a noticeable trend of church members moving from one congregation to another, particularly among Pentecostal Christians in Nigeria. This phenomenon, often referred to as church mobility or church switching, has become a subject of growing concern among pastors, church leaders, and Christian scholars (Adebayo, 2019). The Pentecostal movement, known for its vibrancy, emotional worship, and emphasis on spiritual gifts, has attracted millions of followers across Nigeria. Yet, within this same movement, there is a rising pattern of instability as members frequently move from one congregation to another, seeking what they perceive as more fulfilling spiritual experiences or favorable social environments (Ojo, 2018).

The Pentecostal movement in Nigeria emerged strongly in the late 20th century, characterized by charismatic leadership, emphasis on the power of the Holy Spirit, and messages of prosperity and deliverance (Ukah, 2020). These features initially contributed to rapid church growth and deepened believers’ enthusiasm. However, as Pentecostalism diversified, many new congregations began to compete for membership through innovative worship styles, aggressive evangelism, and promises of material blessings (Asamoah-Gyadu, 2019). Consequently, members are often enticed to leave their current churches for others that appear more attractive, resulting in a form of spiritual consumerism.

Lagos, as Nigeria’s most populous and urbanized city, offers a unique context for studying this phenomenon. The city is home to hundreds of Pentecostal churches that differ in size, theology, leadership style, and socioeconomic composition (Ukah, 2020). The competitive religious atmosphere in Lagos fosters a marketplace of churches where believers can easily switch allegiance. Factors such as charismatic preaching, prosperity-oriented messages, modern facilities, and social networking opportunities all influence individuals’ decisions to change congregations. The city’s fast-paced life also encourages believers to prioritize convenience and emotional satisfaction over long-term commitment to one faith community (Ojo, 2018).

Many Christians justify their movement between churches as a genuine quest for spiritual growth and divine direction. They argue that changing congregations allows them to find better mentorship, stronger prayer support, or environments that nurture their faith more effectively (Asamoah-Gyadu, 2019). In some cases, members claim that doctrinal disagreements or leadership misconduct force them to seek alternative places of worship. While these reasons may appear legitimate, excessive church mobility often raises concerns about the depth of believers’ faith and their understanding of Christian commitment. Constant relocation can reflect a pattern of spiritual instability, impatience, or materialistic motivation rather than a sincere pursuit of God (Afolayan, 2021).

From a biblical perspective, stability and unity are essential virtues within the Christian community. The Apostle Paul urged believers to remain steadfast and united in faith, emphasizing that maturity in Christ comes through consistent fellowship and accountability within the body of believers (Ephesians 4:3–16). Frequent church switching can undermine this biblical principle by preventing individuals from establishing deep spiritual roots or developing strong mentoring relationships. Without consistent pastoral guidance, believers may struggle with fragmented spiritual growth, shallow understanding of doctrine, and weakened moral discipline (Nmah, 2019).

Moreover, the proliferation of new Pentecostal denominations in Nigeria has intensified this problem. Many of these churches emerge from doctrinal splits, leadership conflicts, or entrepreneurial ambitions rather than divine calling (Adebayo, 2019). As a result, members who are dissatisfied in one congregation easily find alternatives that promise better experiences, prophetic encounters, or financial breakthroughs. This constant fragmentation weakens the collective witness of the church in society and may create confusion among believers who struggle to discern authentic spiritual leadership (Okonkwo, 2020).

The commercialization of religious practices has also contributed to this trend. In modern Nigerian Pentecostalism, church attendance is sometimes influenced by promises of prosperity, miracles, or social connections rather than genuine faith commitment (Afolayan, 2021). This “consumer-oriented Christianity” encourages believers to view churches as service providers that must meet personal needs. When these needs are not met, individuals simply move on to the next congregation that offers more appealing benefits. This attitude undermines the sacrificial nature of discipleship and the biblical call to endurance in faith (Asamoah-Gyadu, 2019).

In light of these developments, there is a growing need to understand the underlying reasons why Christians change churches frequently and how such behavior affects their spiritual life. While it may seem harmless at first, repeated church switching could lead to spiritual immaturity, lack of accountability, and weakened fellowship within the body of Christ. Therefore, this study seeks to examine the major factors influencing church mobility among Pentecostal Christians in Lagos and assess its implications on their spiritual growth, commitment, and overall faith development (Ojo, 2018; Ukah, 2020).

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the rapid expansion of Pentecostal churches in Lagos, many congregations continue to experience high rates of membership turnover. Church leaders and administrators invest considerable time, energy, and financial resources in discipleship, evangelism, and spiritual nurture, yet they often face the discouraging reality of members migrating to other churches (Adebayo, 2019). This persistent pattern of instability poses a serious challenge to church growth and unity, as the efforts to build mature, committed Christians are frequently undermined by the transitory nature of membership. The ease with which members move from one church to another suggests that something deeper may be influencing their loyalty, commitment, and perception of spirituality.

A critical question, therefore, arises: why do believers frequently shift allegiance between churches? Some scholars and church leaders attribute this to leadership crises, where poor pastoral care, lack of transparency, or abuse of authority drive members away (Ojo, 2018). Others point to doctrinal differences and theological inconsistencies, especially in the interpretation of prosperity, healing, and deliverance teachings that dominate Pentecostal preaching (Ukah, 2020). In some cases, interpersonal conflicts, dissatisfaction with worship styles, or unmet social and material expectations also play significant roles. The emergence of “celebrity pastors” and competition among churches for popularity and prestige further contribute to the movement of members in search of perceived “better” spiritual environments (Asamoah-Gyadu, 2019).

Beyond these visible causes lies a deeper spiritual concern: the effect of frequent church movement on believers’ faith development and moral stability. Constantly changing churches may interrupt the process of spiritual growth, as believers fail to build long-term relationships, accountability structures, and consistent mentorship in one congregation (Afolayan, 2021). Spiritual maturity, as emphasized in Scripture, requires continuity in fellowship, submission to spiritual authority, and endurance in trials (Ephesians 4:11–16). When these elements are disrupted by constant relocation, believers may become spiritually shallow, emotionally unstable, or easily swayed by every new doctrine or trend.

Moreover, the phenomenon of church switching poses institutional challenges to the church as a social and spiritual organization. Churches spend years nurturing members through teaching, training, and fellowship, only to lose them to other ministries without tangible reasons. This undermines collective efforts at evangelism, leadership development, and community outreach. In a competitive religious environment like Lagos, this turnover can also create tension among churches, foster unhealthy rivalry, and shift focus from the central mission of soul-winning to membership retention strategies (Nmah, 2019). Consequently, church growth may become more numerical than spiritual, as leaders prioritize attraction over discipleship.

While numerous studies have explored the rapid expansion of Pentecostalism in Nigeria and its socio-religious impact, few have addressed the psychological and spiritual implications of members’ frequent movement between churches (Okonkwo, 2020). Much of the existing literature focuses on external factors such as church proliferation, prosperity theology, and leadership dynamics, leaving a gap in understanding how these shifts affect individual believers’ relationship with God. There is, therefore, a pressing need for empirical research that examines not only why Christians move from one church to another but also how such behavior shapes their faith, moral behavior, and spiritual identity.

It is against this background that the present study seeks to examine the reasons behind church mobility among Pentecostal Christians in Lagos and to analyze its consequences on their spiritual life. The study aims to provide insights into how frequent church switching affects spiritual commitment, maturity, and stability among believers. By doing so, it hopes to help church leaders develop strategies that encourage spiritual rootedness, foster authentic discipleship, and strengthen the overall unity and integrity of the Pentecostal community in Lagos.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The main objective of this study is to examine the reasons why some Christians change from one church to another and the implications on their spiritual life. The specific objectives are to:

1. Identify the major factors influencing Christians’ movement from one church to another in Lagos.
2. Examine the effects of such movement on believers’ spiritual growth and maturity.
3. Assess the implications of church switching on commitment and fellowship within the body of Christ.
4. Propose measures that can promote spiritual stability and loyalty among Pentecostal church members.

1.4 Research Questions

The study seeks to answer the following questions:

1. What are the major reasons Christians change from one church to another?
2. How does frequent church movement affect the spiritual life of believers?
3. What are the implications of church switching for commitment and fellowship?
4. What strategies can help reduce instability among Pentecostal church members?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

H₀: There is no significant relationship between leadership style and Christians’ movement from one church to another.

H₁: There is a significant relationship between leadership style and Christians’ movement from one church to another.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is significant because it addresses a growing concern within contemporary Pentecostal Christianity in Nigeria — the frequent movement of believers from one congregation to another and its implications for spiritual life. The phenomenon of church switching has become increasingly visible, particularly in urban centers like Lagos where there is a proliferation of Pentecostal churches (Ukah, 2020). By exploring the root causes of this trend, the study provides a clearer understanding of the motivations and challenges faced by church members in their quest for spiritual fulfillment. Understanding these factors will help church leaders identify patterns of dissatisfaction or disconnection that lead to member migration and allow them to implement measures that foster spiritual commitment and belonging.

Secondly, the study will be of immense benefit to pastors, church administrators, and Christian leaders who are directly responsible for the spiritual well-being of their congregations. Insights from this research will help them develop effective strategies for member retention and pastoral care. By understanding the emotional, doctrinal, and relational factors that drive church switching, leaders can improve the quality of discipleship programs, leadership accountability, and interpersonal relationships within their churches (Adebayo, 2019). This can, in turn, reduce internal conflicts, enhance pastoral effectiveness, and create a more nurturing spiritual environment where believers feel valued and connected.

Furthermore, the study will contribute to the academic and theological discourse on Pentecostalism in Africa. Although Pentecostalism has grown rapidly in Nigeria, much of the literature has focused on its numerical expansion, prosperity teachings, and political influence (Ojo, 2018). Little attention has been given to the dynamics of membership instability and their implications for spiritual growth. By examining both the sociological and theological dimensions of church mobility, this research bridges the gap between empirical observation and biblical principles of stability and discipleship. It will therefore enrich the field of practical theology, religious studies, and church administration with new perspectives on how believers experience and navigate their faith communities.

In addition, the study holds significance for Christian educators, counselors, and discipleship coordinators. Findings from this research will assist them in developing programs that promote spiritual maturity and consistency among believers. For instance, counselors can design faith-based interventions to help members experiencing spiritual dissatisfaction or confusion, while educators can integrate lessons on church loyalty, spiritual discipline, and contentment into Christian education curricula (Afolayan, 2021). Such applications can help reduce the tendency toward spiritual instability and promote a culture of steadfastness within Pentecostal congregations.

Another important contribution of this study lies in its practical and policy implications for inter-church relations and denominational cooperation. When church switching becomes excessive, it not only affects individual believers but also weakens collective Christian witness and unity. The study’s findings can encourage collaboration among church leaders to address the root causes of instability, rather than competing for members. By promoting ethical church practices, sound teaching, and mutual respect among denominations, the research may foster a more united and spiritually mature Pentecostal community in Lagos and beyond (Nmah, 2019).

Finally, this study will serve as a valuable reference for future researchers interested in church dynamics, religious commitment, and spirituality in African Christianity. It provides a foundation for further exploration into related areas such as member retention, pastoral leadership, and the psychology of religious movement. Future studies may build on its findings to examine similar patterns in other denominations or regions of Nigeria. Overall, the research not only contributes to knowledge but also offers practical solutions that can help strengthen the faith, loyalty, and moral integrity of Christians in an era of increasing church mobility and spiritual consumerism.

1.7 Scope of the Study

The study is limited to three selected Pentecostal churches in Lagos State. It focuses on active members and leaders within these congregations to understand the reasons behind church mobility and its spiritual implications. The study will not cover other denominations such as Orthodox or Catholic churches, as their governance and membership structures differ significantly from those of Pentecostal churches.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

Church Switching: This refers to the act of a Christian believer moving from one church or denomination to another within a given period. In the context of this study, church switching describes the continuous or occasional change of membership by individuals among Pentecostal churches in Lagos. It includes both voluntary transfers motivated by personal choice and movements prompted by dissatisfaction, doctrinal differences, or leadership issues.

Church Mobility: Church mobility is the broader sociological phenomenon that encompasses patterns of religious movement or transition among Christians. It involves the tendency of believers to change their religious affiliation or place of worship due to social, spiritual, or economic factors. In this study, it will be used interchangeably with church switching to describe members’ fluidity within Pentecostal congregations in Lagos.

Pentecostalism: Pentecostalism refers to a movement within Christianity that emphasizes the work of the Holy Spirit, the practice of spiritual gifts such as speaking in tongues, prophecy, and divine healing, as well as vibrant worship and evangelism. In this study, Pentecostalism represents a cluster of independent or denominational churches in Lagos that are characterized by expressive worship, emphasis on personal experience of the Holy Spirit, and dynamic leadership.

Spiritual Growth: Spiritual growth refers to the progressive development of a believer’s relationship with God through faith, obedience, prayer, and study of the Word. It reflects maturity in character, service, and understanding of biblical principles. In the context of this study, spiritual growth indicates how consistent church attendance, stable fellowship, and faithful discipleship contribute to or are hindered by frequent church switching.

Spiritual Life: This term refers to the totality of a believer’s relationship with God, encompassing spiritual practices, moral behavior, faith convictions, and commitment to the teachings of Christ. In this study, spiritual life will be used to assess the impact of changing churches on believers’ devotion, moral stability, and commitment to Christian service.

Church Stability: Church stability refers to the ability of a church and its members to maintain consistent fellowship, commitment, and unity over time. For the purpose of this study, it signifies a member’s long-term loyalty to a particular congregation, active participation in its activities, and willingness to grow within its spiritual framework.

Doctrinal Differences: Doctrinal differences denote variations in theological beliefs or teachings among churches. Within the context of this study, such differences may include disagreements over prosperity messages, deliverance practices, spiritual authority, or interpretations of the Bible that influence believers’ decisions to switch churches.

Leadership Style: Leadership style refers to the manner in which pastors or church leaders guide, motivate, and manage members. In this study, it captures the pastoral attitude, communication pattern, and administrative approach that can either encourage members to stay committed or drive them to leave for another church.
