Project – The Relationship Between Leadership Style and Job Satisfaction: A Case Study of First Bank of Nigeria Plc, Enugu State
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Leadership is a fundamental aspect of organizational management and has a profound impact on employee satisfaction and overall organizational performance. Leadership style refers to the approach and behavior exhibited by leaders in guiding, motivating, and managing employees to achieve organizational goals (Robbins & Judge, 2019). Common leadership styles include transformational, transactional, democratic, autocratic, and laissez-faire, each of which can influence employee attitudes, motivation, and satisfaction differently.
Job satisfaction, on the other hand, refers to the degree to which employees feel contented, valued, and fulfilled in their roles within an organization (Armstrong & Taylor, 2020). Employees who experience high levels of satisfaction are more likely to be productive, committed, and loyal to their organization, whereas dissatisfied employees may exhibit low productivity, absenteeism, and higher turnover rates.
In the banking sector, where employees are expected to meet demanding performance targets and maintain high standards of customer service, leadership style plays a crucial role in shaping job satisfaction. First Bank of Nigeria Plc, one of Nigeria’s leading financial institutions, operates in a highly competitive environment where employee performance, motivation, and satisfaction are vital for sustained success (Dessler, 2019). Understanding the relationship between leadership style and job satisfaction is essential for creating an organizational culture that promotes high performance and employee well-being.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the importance of leadership in influencing employee attitudes and performance, many organizations, including First Bank of Nigeria Plc, face challenges in ensuring that leadership practices positively impact job satisfaction. Issues such as ineffective communication, autocratic decision-making, and lack of employee involvement can lead to low job satisfaction, decreased morale, and reduced productivity. While some leaders employ democratic or transformational styles that foster employee engagement, others may rely on transactional or autocratic approaches that limit motivation and satisfaction.
