INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

The teachings of Jesus Christ on love and forgiveness form the foundation of Christian ethics and moral conduct. Central to His message is the command to love God and love one’s neighbour as oneself (Matthew 22:37–39). This dual commandment summarizes the ethical expectation of Christian living and extends beyond emotional affection to deliberate acts of kindness, tolerance, and moral responsibility. Jesus further emphasizes radical love by instructing believers to love even their enemies and pray for those who persecute them (Matthew 5:44). This teaching redefines social relationships by replacing retaliation with compassion and vengeance with forgiveness.

Forgiveness is also a central theme in the teachings of Jesus. In the Lord’s Prayer, believers are taught to ask God for forgiveness in the same measure that they forgive others (Matthew 6:12). This principle highlights forgiveness as both a divine requirement and a moral obligation. According to biblical scholarship, forgiveness is not merely an emotional response but a conscious decision to release resentment and restore broken relationships (Nwachukwu, 2022). In this sense, Jesus’ teachings present forgiveness as essential for peacebuilding and social harmony.

In contemporary society, however, the rise of digital communication has significantly transformed human interaction. Social media platforms such as Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), Instagram, TikTok, and WhatsApp have created spaces where individuals express opinions instantly and publicly. While these platforms have improved communication, they have also contributed to the spread of hate speech, cyberbullying, misinformation, and online conflict. Hate speech refers to expressions that incite hostility, discrimination, or violence against individuals or groups based on identity factors such as ethnicity, religion, or gender (UNESCO, 2021).

In Nigeria and many other societies, online spaces have increasingly become arenas for political hostility, ethnic tension, and religious intolerance. Studies show that digital anonymity often encourages individuals to express extreme views they would otherwise avoid in face-to-face interactions (Adeleke & Ojo, 2023). This has contributed to a growing culture of insult, online aggression, and emotional violence, particularly among youths and politically active users.

The concept of “digital culture” refers to the shared values, behaviors, and communication patterns that emerge from the use of digital technologies (Jenkins, 2020). Within this culture, attention is often driven by virality, emotional reactions, and conflict-based engagement. As a result, online interactions are frequently shaped by outrage, sarcasm, and hostility rather than empathy and understanding.

Despite this trend, Christian ethical teachings—particularly those of Jesus on love and forgiveness—offer a counter-cultural framework for promoting peace and reconciliation in digital spaces. Scholars argue that Christian ethics can play a significant role in reshaping online behavior by encouraging empathy, restraint, and forgiveness in digital communication (Okeke, 2024).

However, there is growing concern that many Christians and non-Christians alike are influenced more by digital culture than by biblical principles when engaging online. This raises important questions about the continued relevance and application of Jesus’ teachings in addressing hate speech and online conflict in contemporary society.

Therefore, this study examines the relevance of Jesus’ teachings on love and forgiveness in addressing hate speech and online conflict in contemporary digital culture.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The rapid expansion of digital communication has transformed how people interact, express opinions, and engage in public discourse. While social media platforms have enhanced connectivity, they have also contributed to increasing levels of hate speech, online hostility, and digital conflict.

In contemporary society, particularly in Nigeria, social media platforms are frequently used to spread insults, ethnic stereotypes, political propaganda, and religious intolerance. Adeleke and Ojo (2023) observe that online anonymity often removes social accountability, allowing individuals to engage in aggressive and harmful communication without fear of immediate consequences.

This growing trend has led to emotional distress, social division, and the breakdown of respectful communication in digital spaces. Cyberbullying and online harassment have become common occurrences, especially among young users who are highly active on social media platforms.

Despite the widespread influence of Christianity in Nigeria and continuous teachings on love and forgiveness in churches, there appears to be a disconnect between religious instruction and online behavior. Many individuals who identify as Christians still participate in or tolerate hate speech and online conflict, contradicting the ethical teachings of Jesus Christ.

Jesus clearly instructs believers to love one another and extend forgiveness without limitation (Matthew 18:21–22). However, in practice, digital interactions often reflect anger, retaliation, and hostility rather than forgiveness and reconciliation. Okeke (2024) notes that the influence of digital culture has, in many cases, overshadowed religious ethical values, especially in online environments where emotional reactions dominate rational discourse.

Furthermore, UNESCO (2021) highlights that hate speech in digital spaces has become a global concern due to its potential to escalate real-world violence and deepen societal divisions. In Nigeria, such online conflicts have been linked to ethnic tensions, political instability, and religious misunderstanding.

Despite the ethical guidance provided in the teachings of Jesus Christ, there is limited empirical understanding of how these teachings influence online behavior in contemporary digital culture. This gap raises questions about the effectiveness and relevance of Christian moral teachings in shaping digital communication practices.

Therefore, the problem this study addresses is the increasing prevalence of hate speech and online conflict in digital culture despite the enduring biblical teachings of love and forgiveness.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The main objective of this study is to examine the relevance of Jesus’ teachings on love and forgiveness in addressing hate speech and online conflict in contemporary digital culture.

Specifically, the study aims to:

1. examine the biblical teachings of Jesus on love and forgiveness;
2. assess the prevalence of hate speech and online conflict in digital spaces;
3. determine the influence of Jesus’ teachings on online communication behavior;
4. explore how Christian ethics can promote peace in digital culture.

1.4 Research Questions

The study is guided by the following research questions:

1. What are the teachings of Jesus on love and forgiveness?
2. How prevalent is hate speech and online conflict in digital culture?
3. To what extent do Jesus’ teachings influence online behavior?
4. How can Christian ethics help reduce online hostility?

1.5 Significance of the Study

This study is significant because it contributes to the understanding of how religious ethics can be applied to modern digital communication challenges.

It will benefit Christian leaders by providing insight into how biblical teachings can be used to address online hostility and promote responsible digital behavior.

It will also assist educators and policymakers in understanding the moral implications of digital communication and the need for ethical guidelines in online spaces.

Furthermore, it will contribute to academic literature on religion, communication, and digital culture by bridging the gap between biblical ethics and modern technology-driven behavior.

Finally, the study will serve as a reference for future researchers interested in Christianity, media ethics, and digital society.

1.6 Scope of the Study

This study focuses on the relevance of Jesus’ teachings on love and forgiveness in addressing hate speech and online conflict within contemporary digital culture. It is limited to Christian ethical perspectives and does not extensively cover other religious traditions.

1.7 Methodology

The study adopts a qualitative and descriptive research approach. It relies on biblical texts, scholarly articles, and recent academic literature (2020–2026) on digital culture, hate speech, and Christian ethics. The analysis is based on theological interpretation and sociological perspectives.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

• Love: A selfless commitment to the well-being of others as taught by Jesus Christ.
• Forgiveness: The intentional release of resentment and willingness to restore relationships.
• Hate Speech: Communication that incites hostility, discrimination, or violence against individuals or groups (UNESCO, 2021).
• Online Conflict: Disputes or aggressive interactions occurring in digital communication platforms.
• Digital Culture: The shared behaviors and communication patterns shaped by digital technologies (Jenkins, 2020).
