INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Marriage is universally recognized as a foundational social institution that shapes family structures, social relationships, and societal stability. In many African societies, including Benin City in Edo State, traditional marriage plays a critical role in consolidating family ties, preserving cultural heritage, and promoting social cohesion (Ojo, 2010). Traditional marriage, also known as customary or indigenous marriage, involves cultural rites, bride price negotiations, family consultations, and community participation. It is a process that not only unites two individuals but also integrates two families and, by extension, strengthens communal bonds (Adebayo, 2014).

In Benin City, traditional marriage ceremonies are highly valued for their cultural, spiritual, and social significance. Practices such as the presentation of gifts, libation, consultation with elders, and observance of indigenous customs are considered essential to legitimate marital unions. Traditional marriage also serves as a tool for family stability, as it provides clear guidelines for spousal roles, responsibilities, and intergenerational expectations (Ukah, 2016). Through these practices, the community reinforces moral conduct, fidelity, and mutual respect between spouses.

However, the relevance of traditional marriage in modern society has come under scrutiny. Contemporary influences such as Christianity, Western education, globalization, and economic changes have altered perceptions of marriage, sometimes leading couples to neglect or partially observe traditional rites (Adogame, 2013). This shift has raised questions about the impact of reduced adherence to traditional marriage customs on family stability, as some studies suggest that families that bypass cultural rites may experience increased conflict, instability, or lack of communal support (Asamoah-Gyadu, 2018).

Family stability is characterized by the ability of a family to maintain harmonious relationships, effectively manage conflicts, provide emotional support, and ensure the social and economic welfare of its members. Traditional marriage is believed to contribute to this stability by clearly defining marital obligations, strengthening the authority of elders, and promoting accountability between spouses. In Benin City, where extended family structures remain significant, traditional marriage ceremonies are often regarded as essential for legitimizing unions and ensuring long-term family cohesion (Odigie, 2015).

Despite the cultural importance of traditional marriage, empirical research on its relevance to contemporary family stability in urban centers like Benin City is limited. There is a need to understand how adherence to traditional marital practices influences marital satisfaction, conflict resolution, and intergenerational relationships in the context of modern social pressures. This study seeks to address this gap by investigating the relevance of traditional marriage to family stability in Benin City.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Family instability, including divorce, separation, and domestic conflicts, has become increasingly visible in urban Nigerian societies. In Benin City, factors such as modernization, changing social norms, economic pressures, and religious influences have led some couples to bypass traditional marriage rites, opting instead for civil or religious ceremonies alone. While such approaches may be convenient, they sometimes result in weak familial bonds, lack of extended family support, and increased marital disputes (Odigie, 2015).

Furthermore, there is growing concern that the decline in adherence to traditional marriage practices contributes to moral laxity, misunderstandings between spouses, and inadequate conflict resolution mechanisms. Traditional marriage, with its structured processes, mediating elders, and cultural expectations, is believed to play a stabilizing role in marital relationships. Yet, many modern couples in Benin City may undervalue these cultural processes, creating a gap between tradition and contemporary marital practice (Ukah, 2016).

The problem, therefore, is the lack of empirical understanding of how traditional marriage practices affect family stability in Benin City. While scholars have acknowledged the cultural significance of traditional marriage, there is limited evidence on its practical relevance to contemporary family life, particularly in urban settings where traditional values often compete with modern lifestyles. This study seeks to answer the central question: To what extent does adherence to traditional marriage practices influence family stability in Benin City?

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The study aims to achieve the following objectives:

1. To examine the cultural practices and components of traditional marriage in Benin City.

2. To assess the influence of traditional marriage on family stability among married couples.

3. To identify challenges that limit the practice of traditional marriage in contemporary society.

4. To recommend strategies for reinforcing the relevance of traditional marriage in promoting family stability.

1.4 Research Questions

The study is guided by the following research questions:

1. What are the key cultural practices and components of traditional marriage in Benin City?

2. How does traditional marriage influence family stability among married couples?

3. What challenges hinder the practice of traditional marriage in modern Benin City?

4. What strategies can be adopted to enhance the relevance of traditional marriage for family stability?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

The study will test the following hypothesis at a 5% level of significance:

• H₀: Traditional marriage has no significant effect on family stability in Benin City.

• H1: Traditional marriage has a significant effect on family stability in Benin City.

1.6 Significance of the Study

The study is significant in the following ways:

1. Married Couples: It will provide insights into the importance of traditional marriage practices for maintaining harmonious and stable family relationships.

2. Community Leaders and Elders: The study will assist in developing culturally sensitive marriage counseling and conflict resolution programs.

3. Academia: Contributes to the body of knowledge on marriage, family studies, and cultural practices in Nigeria.

4. Policy Makers and Marriage Counselors: Provides evidence-based recommendations for integrating traditional values with contemporary marital frameworks to enhance family stability.

1.7 Scope of the Study

The study focuses on the relevance of traditional marriage on family stability in Benin City, Edo State. It examines married couples who have undergone traditional marriage ceremonies or are knowledgeable about its practices. The study explores the relationship between adherence to traditional marriage customs and family outcomes, including marital harmony, conflict resolution, and overall family cohesion. The study is limited to urban areas of Benin City and considers couples married for at least two years to ensure adequate exposure to family life.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

• Traditional Marriage: A culturally sanctioned union in which marriage rites, bride price, family consultation, and community involvement are observed according to indigenous norms (Ojo, 2010).

• Family Stability: The state in which a family maintains harmonious relationships, effective conflict resolution, and emotional, social, and economic cohesion.

• Cultural Practices: Norms, values, and rituals passed down through generations that influence social behavior and marital conduct.

• Marital Harmony: The quality of peaceful, cooperative, and mutually respectful interactions between spouses.

• Benin City: The capital of Edo State, Nigeria, noted for its rich cultural heritage and historical adherence to traditional customs.
