Project – The Role of Biblical Teachings on Marriage in Addressing Marital Conflicts Among Christian Couples in Selected churches in Aba South LGA, Abia State.
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
Marriage is a fundamental social and religious institution through which individuals establish family relationships, share responsibilities, and provide emotional, moral, spiritual, and material support for one another. In the Christian tradition, marriage is generally understood as a covenant relationship that requires love, faithfulness, mutual respect, patience, commitment, and responsibility. Biblical teachings provide moral and spiritual principles intended to guide couples in establishing and maintaining healthy marital relationships. Genesis 2:24 presents marriage as the union of a man and a woman who become one flesh, while Ephesians 5:21–33 emphasizes mutual submission, sacrificial love, and commitment between spouses. These teachings establish an important framework for understanding marriage beyond companionship and legal commitment. They also provide principles that may help couples manage disagreements, respond to emotional difficulties, and preserve unity within the family. From a Christian perspective, therefore, the relevance of biblical teachings extends beyond wedding ceremonies and religious observances to the everyday decisions and interactions that shape marital life.
Marital conflict is a common feature of intimate relationships because spouses may differ in personality, expectations, values, communication styles, financial priorities, family backgrounds, and approaches to problem-solving. Such differences do not necessarily mean that a marriage has failed; rather, the way couples understand and manage disagreements can determine whether conflict strengthens mutual understanding or produces lasting resentment. Markman, Stanley, and Blumberg (2010) explain that relationship stability is influenced by how couples communicate, manage disagreements, and respond to recurring problems. Similarly, Gottman and Silver (2015) emphasize that destructive communication patterns, contempt, defensiveness, and emotional withdrawal can weaken marital relationships when they are not addressed constructively. Biblical teachings offer relevant principles for responding to these challenges. For example, James 1:19 encourages believers to be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to anger, while Proverbs 15:1 highlights the value of a gentle response in reducing anger. These principles suggest that biblical instruction may contribute to constructive communication and conflict management among Christian couples when the teachings are understood and applied consistently.
One of the central biblical principles relevant to marital conflict is love, particularly the kind of love expressed through patience, kindness, forgiveness, and concern for another person’s welfare. In 1 Corinthians 13:4–7, love is described as patient and kind, not easily angered, and not keeping a record of wrongs. These qualities are important in marriage because unresolved disagreements may become more serious when spouses repeatedly blame one another, refuse to forgive, or prioritize winning an argument over restoring understanding. Chapman (2015) explains that spouses may experience and express love differently, making it necessary for partners to understand one another’s emotional needs and communicate affection meaningfully. Although this approach is not a substitute for biblical interpretation or professional marital counselling, it demonstrates the practical importance of intentional care and communication in intimate relationships. Biblical teachings on love can therefore provide Christian couples with a moral basis for patience, empathy, reconciliation, and the willingness to address disagreements without deliberately humiliating or emotionally injuring their partners.
Another important dimension of biblical marriage teaching is the emphasis on mutual respect, responsibility, and the dignity of both spouses. Ephesians 5:21 introduces the discussion of marital relationships with the principle of mutual submission, while Ephesians 5:25 instructs husbands to love their wives sacrificially. Colossians 3:19 further warns husbands against treating their wives harshly, and 1 Peter 3:7 calls for consideration and honour within the marital relationship. These passages can inform discussions about power, decision-making, household responsibilities, and the treatment of spouses during disagreements. However, biblical passages on marital roles require careful interpretation within their historical, cultural, and literary contexts. They should not be used to justify intimidation, coercion, or violence against a spouse. In contemporary Christian marriage, teachings about love, honour, and mutual responsibility are especially relevant to addressing conflicts arising from unequal decision-making, disrespect, unmet expectations, and competing views about family leadership. Their practical significance depends on whether couples and church leaders interpret and teach them in ways that promote dignity, accountability, and peaceful coexistence.
Forgiveness and reconciliation are also significant themes in biblical teachings that may help Christian couples address marital conflicts. Colossians 3:13 encourages believers to forgive one another, while Ephesians 4:26–32 addresses anger, bitterness, harmful speech, kindness, and forgiveness. These teachings are relevant where disagreements have resulted in hurt feelings, mistrust, resentment, or repeated arguments. Nevertheless, forgiveness should not be confused with denying the seriousness of wrongdoing or requiring a victim to remain in a dangerous situation. Reconciliation may require acknowledgement of harm, genuine repentance, behavioural change, and the rebuilding of trust. Fincham, Hall, and Beach (2006) identify forgiveness as an important area in the study of marriage and close relationships, while Worthington (2006) discusses forgiveness as a process that can influence emotional responses and interpersonal relationships. In this context, biblical instruction on forgiveness may assist couples in moving beyond retaliation and persistent hostility. Its effectiveness, however, may depend on whether it is accompanied by accountability, honest communication, and appropriate professional or pastoral support where necessary.
The church occupies an important position in the lives of many Christian couples because it provides religious instruction, pastoral counselling, premarital preparation, prayer, fellowship, and opportunities for discussing family responsibilities. Religious communities may influence how couples understand marriage, interpret conflict, and decide when to seek assistance. Mahoney (2010) explains that religion and spirituality can shape family relationships through beliefs, practices, moral commitments, and shared meanings. Similarly, Dollahite and Marks (2009) discuss the ways religious involvement and faith-based practices can contribute to family relationships and responsibilities. In churches, sermons on marital faithfulness, love, patience, forgiveness, and mutual respect may reinforce values that support healthy relationships. Pastors and marriage counsellors may also help couples identify recurring sources of conflict and develop more constructive responses. However, the presence of biblical teaching within a church does not automatically mean that couples will apply it effectively in their homes. The relationship between religious instruction and actual marital conduct therefore deserves investigation, particularly regarding the consistency of teaching, the quality of counselling, and the willingness of couples to seek help when difficulties arise.
In Aba South Local Government Area of Abia State, Christian churches operate within a social environment in which couples may face pressures associated with household finances, employment, parenting, extended-family expectations, communication, and changing views about marital responsibilities. These pressures may interact with individual differences and religious expectations, creating circumstances in which disagreements become difficult to resolve. While biblical teachings offer principles that can guide couples through such challenges, their practical influence may vary according to the couple’s understanding of scripture, level of religious commitment, communication skills, and access to effective pastoral counselling. General findings from relationship and family studies cannot, by themselves, establish how Christian couples in selected churches in Aba South understand or apply these teachings. A local study is therefore necessary to examine the specific marital conflicts couples experience, the biblical principles they consider useful, and the role played by churches in teaching and applying those principles. Such an investigation may contribute to a clearer understanding of how biblical teachings can support constructive conflict management, while also identifying circumstances in which additional counselling, professional assistance, or protective intervention is required.
Against this background, the present study examines the role of biblical teachings on marriage in addressing marital conflicts among Christian couples in selected churches in Aba South LGA, Abia State. The study focuses on the teachings that relate to love, communication, forgiveness, patience, mutual respect, faithfulness, and shared responsibility. It also considers how couples understand these teachings, the extent to which they apply them when disagreements arise, and the contribution of church-based marriage education and pastoral counselling to conflict resolution. The study does not assume that all marital conflicts can be resolved through religious instruction alone; rather, it recognises biblical teachings as one potential resource within a broader process that may include dialogue, accountability, counselling, and other appropriate forms of support. By examining the experiences of couples in selected churches, the research seeks to provide context-specific evidence on the relationship between biblical teaching and marital conflict management and to identify practical ways churches can strengthen their support for Christian families.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Marriage is expected to provide companionship, emotional support, mutual responsibility, and a stable environment for family life. Nevertheless, disagreements arising from financial difficulties, communication problems, child-rearing practices, sexual expectations, extended-family involvement, and differences in personal values may place considerable strain on marital relationships. Although conflict is not necessarily evidence of marital failure, persistent hostility, poor communication, and unresolved grievances can undermine relationship satisfaction and stability. Gottman and Silver (2015) highlight the importance of constructive communication and the management of recurring disagreements in maintaining healthy marriages. This raises an important concern about the extent to which Christian couples possess and apply effective principles for resolving marital disagreements, particularly when the conflicts involve deeply held expectations, emotional injuries, or competing interpretations of marital responsibilities.
Biblical teachings provide Christian couples with principles such as love, patience, forgiveness, faithfulness, humility, and mutual respect. However, the availability of these teachings does not automatically guarantee their practical application in marital relationships. Some couples may regularly attend church services and participate in religious activities but still experience difficulties in communicating peacefully, forgiving one another, sharing responsibilities, or resolving recurring disputes. Mahoney (2010) observes that religion can influence marital and family relationships in both beneficial and problematic ways, depending on the beliefs, practices, and relational processes involved. Consequently, the problem is not simply whether Christian couples are exposed to biblical teachings, but whether they understand these teachings correctly and translate them into practical behaviours that promote reconciliation and responsible conflict management.
Another concern is the role of churches in preparing couples for marriage and assisting those experiencing marital difficulties. Churches may provide premarital instruction, pastoral counselling, marriage seminars, prayer meetings, and guidance based on biblical principles. Nevertheless, the availability, accessibility, and effectiveness of these services may differ among congregations. Furthermore, marital problems involving persistent emotional abuse, coercion, physical violence, or severe psychological distress may require specialised professional intervention in addition to pastoral support. Dollahite and Marks (2009) identify prayer, repentance, forgiveness, shared faith, and religious teaching as processes through which highly religious families may address difficulties. However, these findings do not establish that every church-based approach is effective in every circumstance. It is therefore necessary to examine whether the selected churches in Aba South provide appropriate guidance and counselling that help couples address disagreements while maintaining personal dignity, safety, and accountability.
Despite the potential relevance of biblical teachings to marital relationships, there is a need for context-specific evidence concerning how Christian couples in selected churches in Aba South Local Government Area understand and apply these teachings when dealing with marital conflicts. Without such evidence, it may be difficult for church leaders, marriage counsellors, and couples to identify which teachings are most helpful, which practical challenges prevent their application, and how church-based marriage education can be improved. The central problem of this study, therefore, is the insufficient locally established evidence regarding the role of biblical teachings on marriage in addressing marital conflicts among Christian couples in selected churches in Aba South LGA, Abia State. The study seeks to investigate this relationship rather than assume in advance that biblical instruction alone eliminates marital disagreements.

1.5 Research Hypothesis
The following null hypothesis will guide the study:
H₀: There is no statistically significant relationship between the application of biblical teachings on marriage and marital conflict resolution among Christian couples in selected churches in Aba South LGA, Abia State.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study is significant because it may contribute to a better understanding of the relationship between Christian religious teachings and practical approaches to managing marital disagreements. Its findings may be useful to Christian couples, church leaders, marriage counsellors, theological educators, researchers, and other stakeholders interested in strengthening marital relationships and family life.
Christian couples: The study may help couples recognise how biblical principles such as love, patience, forgiveness, humility, honest communication, and mutual respect can be applied to everyday marital challenges. It may encourage couples to examine their responses to disagreements and develop more constructive ways of handling differences.
Church leaders and pastors: The findings may provide insights into the effectiveness of existing marriage teachings, premarital preparation, and pastoral counselling programmes. Church leaders may use the findings to improve marriage seminars, counselling practices, and follow-up support for couples experiencing persistent conflicts.
Marriage counsellors: The study may help counsellors understand the religious beliefs and biblical principles that are important to Christian couples. This understanding may support culturally and religiously sensitive counselling that combines couples’ faith commitments with appropriate communication and conflict-management strategies.
Theological institutions and Christian educators: The study may contribute to discussions about the practical relevance of biblical teachings on marriage. It may encourage theological educators to address communication, conflict resolution, mutual responsibility, forgiveness, and the importance of seeking appropriate professional assistance when marital difficulties exceed the limits of pastoral support.
Researchers and students: The study may serve as a reference for future research on Christian marriage, biblical ethics, family relationships, religious counselling, and conflict resolution. It may also provide a basis for comparative studies involving other denominations, local government areas, or religious communities.
Society at large: Stable and respectful marital relationships can contribute to family wellbeing and constructive social relationships. By examining ways biblical teachings may support peaceful conflict management, the study may offer insights relevant to family education and community-based support programmes.
1.7 Scope of the Study
The geographical scope of this study is Aba South Local Government Area of Abia State, Nigeria. The research will focus on selected Christian churches within the area and Christian couples who are married and affiliated with those churches. The specific churches will be selected according to the study’s sampling criteria and the accessibility of eligible participants.
The content scope covers biblical teachings on marriage, particularly love, forgiveness, patience, communication, faithfulness, mutual respect, humility, and shared responsibility. It will examine how couples understand these teachings, the extent to which they apply them during disagreements, the contribution of church leaders and pastoral counselling, and the challenges that may prevent their practical application.
The study is concerned with marital conflict management and resolution rather than with proving that all marital disagreements can be eliminated through religious instruction. It recognises that some situations require professional counselling, legal support, or protective intervention, particularly where abuse or threats to personal safety are involved. The findings will relate primarily to the participating couples and selected churches and should not automatically be generalised to every Christian couple in Aba South LGA or Abia State.
1.8 Limitations of the Study
The study may encounter certain limitations. First, some respondents may be reluctant to disclose sensitive information about disagreements within their marriages because of concerns about privacy, embarrassment, or religious expectations. This may affect the completeness of their responses.
Second, the study may rely partly on self-reported information. Respondents may describe their application of biblical teachings in socially desirable ways rather than report their actual behaviour during marital disagreements. Assurances of confidentiality and the use of neutral questions may help reduce this problem.
Third, the study will cover selected churches rather than every church in Aba South LGA. Differences in denominational teachings, church leadership, counselling practices, and congregational culture may limit the extent to which the findings represent the wider Christian population.
Finally, marital conflict is influenced by several interacting factors, including finances, personality, communication, family background, and external pressures. Consequently, the study may identify associations between biblical teachings and conflict management without establishing that religious teachings alone cause particular marital outcomes.
1.9 Operational Definition of Terms
Biblical teachings on marriage: Scriptural principles and instructions concerning marital relationships, including love, faithfulness, forgiveness, patience, mutual respect, communication, and responsibility.
Marriage: A socially and, within the context of this study, religiously recognised union between spouses who undertake shared responsibilities and commitments.
Marital conflict: Disagreements, tensions, or disputes between spouses arising from differences in expectations, values, decisions, communication, finances, family responsibilities, or other aspects of married life.
Conflict resolution: The processes through which spouses address disagreements, communicate their concerns, negotiate differences, repair relational harm, and seek mutually acceptable outcomes.
Christian couples: Married couples who identify with the Christian faith and are affiliated with one of the churches selected for the study.
Pastoral counselling: Guidance and support provided by pastors or other authorised church counsellors to individuals or couples experiencing personal, relational, or marital difficulties.
