Project – The Role of Christian Counselling in Managing Marital Conflicts among Christian Couples: A Study of Selected Churches in Enugu Metropolis, Enugu State

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

Marriage is an important social institution through which individuals establish intimate relationships, provide companionship, form families and assume mutual responsibilities. Within Christianity, marriage is additionally understood as a covenantal relationship characterised by love, commitment, fidelity, mutual care and spiritual partnership. However, the existence of commitment does not eliminate disagreements between spouses. Differences in expectations, communication patterns, finances, household responsibilities, sexual relationships, extended-family relationships and personal values can generate marital conflict. Research in Nigeria has documented several of these factors, including financial difficulties, communication gaps, lack of trust, sexual deprivation and infidelity, as important issues associated with marital disharmony (Ibeh et al., 2013; Ayodele & Ofoha, 2014).

Marital conflict refers to disagreement, tension or incompatibility between spouses concerning issues affecting their relationship and family life. Conflict is not necessarily synonymous with marital failure because couples may disagree while maintaining commitment to the relationship; rather, the way disagreements are handled can influence their consequences for the marriage. Communication is particularly relevant because research with newlywed couples has demonstrated associations between communication patterns and relationship satisfaction, although the direction and strength of these relationships are more complex than the assumption that communication alone determines satisfaction (Lavner et al., 2016). In Nigeria, Onyela, Adams and Odobo (2024) similarly identified communication breakdown, cultural differences, financial issues and household responsibilities among factors associated with marital conflicts among Christian couples in Kosofe, Lagos State.

Christian counselling can be understood as a helping process that combines appropriate counselling principles with Christian beliefs, values and spiritual resources to assist individuals or couples in addressing personal, relational and family difficulties. In the context of marriage, Christian counselling may involve active listening, communication training, conflict-resolution skills, emotional support, forgiveness, problem-solving, biblical reflection, prayer and other appropriate interventions. Counselling should not be understood as simply giving religious advice; effective counselling requires appropriate skills, confidentiality, ethical conduct and sensitivity to the nature of the presenting problem. A systematic review and meta-analysis by Javadivala et al. (2021), covering 12 intervention studies, found that marriage and relationship programmes involving education, communication skills, enrichment and therapy were associated with improvements in relationship satisfaction and communication, although the authors cautioned that heterogeneity among the studies created uncertainty concerning the magnitude of effects.

Christian churches can provide an important setting for marriage counselling because pastors, ministers and other church-based caregivers are often trusted sources of guidance for couples. Within Christian communities, counselling may occur before marriage, immediately after marriage or when couples encounter serious relational difficulties. The Christian approach may also encourage couples to consider values such as love, forgiveness, patience, mutual responsibility, faithfulness and reconciliation. Nigerian research has demonstrated the relevance of counselling to marital stability. Nwangwu et al. (2024), in a study of married secondary-school teachers in Enugu State, reported that behavioural counselling and cognitive-behavioural strategies were perceived as useful for marital stability and recommended counselling workshops and related interventions for families. These findings provide a local basis for examining counselling within marital relationships, while the present study specifically focuses on Christian counselling among Christian couples.

The need for counselling becomes particularly important when marital conflicts become repetitive, unresolved or emotionally damaging. Couples may respond to disagreement through constructive discussion and negotiation, but they may also resort to avoidance, criticism, withdrawal, blame or other patterns that make resolution more difficult. Ibeh et al. (2013), in their study of marital disharmony in Enugu State, identified infertility, lack of trust, sexual deprivation, finance, communication gaps and infidelity among reported causes of marital disharmony. Their findings also identified the use of family counsellors, careful listening, tactful communication and expressions of love and appreciation among strategies for addressing marital disharmony. Such evidence suggests that counselling may form part of a broader set of interventions for couples experiencing relational difficulties.

The Christian dimension of marital counselling is also relevant because religious beliefs may shape how couples understand marriage, conflict, forgiveness and family responsibilities. For Christian couples, counselling may therefore incorporate spiritual resources alongside relational and psychological approaches. However, Christian counselling should recognise that different marital conflicts have different levels of complexity. Some disagreements may involve communication or financial management, while others may involve infidelity, severe emotional distress, coercion or domestic violence and may require specialised professional intervention. Research on marital conflict management among Christian couples in Kosofe found that although the reported level of conflict was generally low, communication breakdown, financial issues, cultural differences and household responsibilities were among the factors associated with conflict, and some conflicts remained unresolved for extended periods (Onyela et al., 2024). This demonstrates the importance of examining both the availability and the practical application of counselling and support services within Christian communities.

Enugu State provides an important context for examining Christian counselling and marital conflict because existing research has identified marital disharmony and counselling for marital stability as significant issues within the state. Ibeh et al. (2013) examined 300 couples in Enugu State and investigated both the causes of marital disharmony and strategies for resolving it, while Nwangwu et al. (2024) investigated counselling strategies for marital stability among 499 married teachers in the state. These studies provide evidence that marital conflict and counselling are established research concerns in Enugu State. Nevertheless, the available evidence does not specifically establish how Christian counselling is being used by selected churches to manage conflicts among Christian couples or how couples perceive its effectiveness. The present study therefore focuses on the role of Christian counselling in managing marital conflicts among Christian couples in selected churches in Enugu Metropolis, Enugu State, with attention to the causes of conflict, counselling approaches, perceived effectiveness and challenges affecting counselling practice.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Marital conflict remains a concern even among couples who identify as Christians and participate actively in church life. Christian teachings emphasise love, forgiveness, patience, faithfulness and mutual responsibility, yet these values do not automatically prevent disagreements between spouses. Evidence from Enugu State indicates that marital disharmony may arise from issues such as infertility, financial problems, lack of trust, sexual difficulties, communication gaps and infidelity (Ibeh et al., 2013). Similarly, research among Christian couples in Kosofe, Lagos State, identified communication breakdown, cultural differences, financial issues and household responsibilities as factors associated with marital conflicts (Onyela et al., 2024). The problem is therefore not merely the existence of disagreement but the capacity of couples to manage disagreements constructively and prevent persistent conflict from undermining the marital relationship.

A second problem concerns the extent to which Christian counselling is available and effectively utilised when couples experience marital conflict. Churches may provide pastors, marriage counsellors, family ministries, seminars and counselling sessions, but the nature, structure and quality of these services may vary among churches. Evidence from Enugu State indicates that behavioural and cognitive-behavioural counselling strategies were perceived as useful for marital stability among married teachers (Nwangwu et al., 2024). Similarly, international evidence from Javadivala et al. (2021) indicates that different marriage and relationship interventions can improve relationship satisfaction and communication, although intervention outcomes vary and the authors noted substantial heterogeneity among studies. Consequently, there is a need to examine what forms of Christian counselling are actually employed in selected churches and how couples perceive their usefulness in managing marital conflicts.

A third problem is that some marital conflicts may remain unresolved despite the availability of counselling or other forms of support. The study by Onyela et al. (2024) found that Christian couples in Kosofe experienced conflicts that could remain unresolved for extended periods, while Ibeh et al. (2013) identified the use of family counsellors and constructive communication among strategies for addressing marital disharmony in Enugu State. Persistent conflict may involve increasingly complex relational, emotional, financial or behavioural issues, meaning that counselling interventions need to be appropriate to the circumstances of the couple. Research on couples also indicates that communication and relationship satisfaction are related in complex ways rather than through a simple one-directional relationship (Lavner et al., 2016). The concern, therefore, is whether Christian counselling in the selected churches is sufficiently equipped to help couples address the different forms and levels of conflict they experience.

A fourth problem is the limited context-specific evidence concerning the role of Christian counselling specifically in managing marital conflicts among Christian couples in Enugu Metropolis. Existing research in Enugu has examined causes of marital disharmony and general counselling strategies for marital stability, while research in Lagos has examined conflict management among Christian couples. However, these studies do not specifically establish how Christian counselling is organised and utilised within selected churches in Enugu Metropolis or the extent to which Christian couples perceive it as useful for managing their marital conflicts. Therefore, there is a need for empirical investigation into the counselling strategies employed by selected churches, the major marital conflicts experienced by Christian couples, the perceived effectiveness of Christian counselling and the challenges encountered in providing such counselling. This study is designed to address this gap.

1.3 Purpose of the Study

The main purpose of this study is to examine the role of Christian counselling in managing marital conflicts among Christian couples in selected churches in Enugu Metropolis, Enugu State.

Specifically, the study seeks to:

  1. Identify the major causes of marital conflicts among Christian couples in selected churches in Enugu Metropolis, Enugu State.
  2. Examine the Christian counselling strategies used by selected churches to manage marital conflicts among Christian couples.
  3. Assess the perceived effectiveness of Christian counselling in managing marital conflicts among Christian couples in the selected churches.
  4. Identify the challenges affecting the provision and utilisation of Christian counselling for managing marital conflicts among Christian couples in the selected churches.

1.4 Research Questions

The following research questions will guide the study:

  1. What are the major causes of marital conflicts among Christian couples in selected churches in Enugu Metropolis, Enugu State?
  2. What Christian counselling strategies are used by selected churches to manage marital conflicts among Christian couples?
  3. To what extent is Christian counselling perceived to be effective in managing marital conflicts among Christian couples?
  4. What challenges affect the provision and utilisation of Christian counselling for managing marital conflicts among Christian couples in the selected churches?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

The following null hypothesis will be tested at the 0.05 level of significance:

H₀: There is no statistically significant relationship between Christian counselling and the management of marital conflicts among Christian couples in selected churches in Enugu Metropolis, Enugu State.

1.6 Significance of the Study

The study may be significant to Christian couples because it may increase awareness of the role that appropriate counselling can play when marital disagreements become difficult to manage. The findings may encourage couples to seek constructive assistance before unresolved disagreements become more entrenched.

The study may be beneficial to pastors, Christian counsellors and church leaders because it may provide information about the common causes of marital conflicts and the counselling approaches used by churches. The findings may assist church leaders in strengthening marriage counselling services, training counsellors and developing appropriate referral procedures for cases requiring specialised professional intervention.

The study may be useful to churches and Christian organisations in designing premarital and post-marital programmes. Evidence from the study may help churches strengthen marriage seminars, couples’ fellowships, family ministries and counselling programmes.

The study may also be relevant to professional counsellors and family therapists because it may provide insight into the spiritual and relational dimensions of marital conflict among Christian couples. Such information may support more culturally and religiously responsive approaches when professional services are provided to Christian clients.

The study may benefit theological institutions and Christian educators by providing empirical material that can be incorporated into the teaching of pastoral care, Christian counselling, marriage ministry and family studies.

Finally, the study may contribute to academic literature in counselling, Christian education, theology, religious studies, psychology and social work. In particular, it will provide context-specific evidence from selected churches in Enugu Metropolis concerning Christian counselling and marital conflict management.

1.7 Scope of the Study

The study is focused on the role of Christian counselling in managing marital conflicts among Christian couples in selected churches in Enugu Metropolis, Enugu State.

The content scope covers the major causes of marital conflicts, Christian counselling strategies, perceived effectiveness of counselling and challenges affecting the provision and utilisation of Christian counselling services.

The geographical scope is limited to selected Christian churches within Enugu Metropolis, Enugu State, Nigeria.
