Project – The Role of Christian Education in Promoting Peace and Conflict Resolution in Communities of Idah LGA, Kogi State
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Peace and social cohesion are critical for the development of communities and the wellbeing of individuals. Communities that experience persistent conflicts often face disruption in education, economic activities, social interactions, and general quality of life (Obi, 2015). Nigeria, with its multi-ethnic and multi-religious composition, has historically experienced localized conflicts arising from political disagreements, resource disputes, cultural differences, and social tensions (Eze, 2016). In this context, peacebuilding and conflict resolution become essential components for sustainable development and community stability.
Christian education has long been recognized as a mechanism for fostering moral and ethical development, with an emphasis on values such as forgiveness, reconciliation, empathy, and non-violence (Adeyemo, 2016). Beyond its spiritual dimension, Christian education in schools, churches, and community programs equips individuals with the knowledge and practical skills to manage interpersonal conflicts, promote harmonious coexistence, and contribute to community peace. The teachings of the Bible often emphasize conflict resolution principles, such as “blessed are the peacemakers” (Matthew 5:9) and the importance of resolving disputes amicably (Matthew 18:15–17), which serve as foundational guidelines for promoting peaceful behavior.
Idah Local Government Area (LGA) in Kogi State is a diverse community composed of multiple ethnic and religious groups. Like many other Nigerian communities, Idah faces occasional conflicts arising from communal land disputes, political disagreements, and social misunderstandings. While formal governance structures exist to manage conflicts, community members often rely on religious and moral teachings as a guide for resolving disputes. Christian education, delivered through churches, Sunday schools, youth programs, and adult study groups, provides a platform for instilling peace-oriented values and promoting reconciliation within families and the wider community.
Despite the potential benefits of Christian education in promoting peace, evidence suggests that communities like Idah still experience episodes of tension and unresolved conflicts (Okeke, 2017). This raises questions about the extent to which Christian education effectively contributes to peacebuilding and conflict resolution. Factors such as the quality of teaching, level of community engagement, adherence to Christian principles, and the influence of socio-economic pressures may affect the impact of Christian education in these areas. Therefore, there is a need to empirically investigate how Christian education shapes attitudes, knowledge, and behaviors related to peace and conflict resolution among residents of Idah LGA.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Communities in Idah LGA, like many other parts of Nigeria, experience periodic disputes and conflicts that affect social harmony and development. These conflicts range from interpersonal disagreements within families to wider communal disputes over resources and governance (Obi, 2015). While Christian education is widely promoted in the area as a moral and spiritual guide, reports suggest that its role in fostering peace and resolving conflicts may not be fully realized.
Several factors may contribute to this gap. First, the methods of imparting Christian education may not adequately emphasize practical conflict resolution skills or may focus predominantly on doctrinal instruction rather than applied ethics. Second, socio-economic challenges, political tensions, and cultural practices may undermine the peaceful principles taught in Christian education. Third, inconsistent attendance in church-based programs or limited parental reinforcement of biblical teachings may reduce their effectiveness (Adeyemo, 2016).
This situation highlights a critical knowledge gap regarding the influence of Christian education on peace and conflict resolution in Idah LGA. Without empirical research, it is difficult to determine whether Christian education positively affects individuals’ attitudes and behaviors towards conflict resolution or whether additional strategies are needed to enhance its impact. This study seeks to address this gap by evaluating the role of Christian education in promoting peace and conflict resolution in communities of Idah LGA, Kogi State.
