INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

The relationship between humanity, the natural environment, and divine creation has remained a significant concern within theological reflection throughout Christian history. The Christian faith presents the world not as an independent reality existing without purpose but as God’s creation entrusted to humanity for responsible care and stewardship. The biblical creation narratives establish that the earth belongs to God and that human beings have a responsibility to cultivate, preserve, and protect the created order (Genesis 1:26–28; Psalm 24:1). Consequently, environmental responsibility is not merely a scientific, economic, or political concern but also a theological and ethical responsibility.

Christian ethics, as a branch of theological study concerned with moral responsibility and human conduct in relation to God and others, provides important frameworks for addressing environmental challenges. Traditionally, Christian ethics has focused on issues such as human relationships, justice, morality, and social responsibility. However, increasing ecological crises have expanded theological discussions toward environmental ethics, recognising that the destruction of the natural environment affects both human communities and the broader integrity of God’s creation.

Environmental degradation refers to the deterioration of the natural environment through human activities that negatively affect ecosystems, biodiversity, and human wellbeing. It includes pollution, deforestation, climate change, resource exploitation, and destruction of natural habitats. In contemporary societies, environmental degradation has become one of the most pressing challenges facing humanity, raising ethical questions concerning human responsibility, economic development, and justice for vulnerable communities.

Within Christian theology, environmental ethics challenges interpretations of dominion that portray humanity as having unlimited authority over nature. Some historical interpretations of Genesis 1:28 have been criticised for encouraging exploitative relationships with the environment by presenting humans as rulers rather than caretakers of creation. However, contemporary theological scholars argue that biblical dominion should be understood as responsible stewardship, reflecting God’s own care for creation. John Stott emphasises that human authority over creation involves responsibility and accountability before God rather than unrestricted exploitation (Stott, 2006).

The ecological dimension of Christian ethics has received significant attention through the development of creation theology and ecological theology. Jürgen Moltmann argues that Christian theology must recognise the interconnectedness of humanity and creation because God’s redemptive purposes include the renewal of the entire created order (Moltmann, 1985). Similarly, Leonardo Boff maintains that ecological destruction is not only an environmental issue but also a moral and spiritual crisis connected with injustice, greed, and irresponsible human behaviour (Boff, 1997).

The biblical narrative provides strong foundations for ecological responsibility. The creation account in Genesis presents humanity as placed in the garden of Eden “to work it and take care of it” (Genesis 2:15). This passage suggests that human beings are called not only to utilise natural resources but also to preserve and nurture creation. The Old Testament also contains environmental principles through Sabbath regulations, land rest practices, and concern for animals and natural resources (Exodus 23:10–11; Leviticus 25:1–7). These texts demonstrate that biblical faith recognises limits on human exploitation and promotes sustainable relationships with creation.

The New Testament also presents theological foundations for environmental responsibility. The writings of Paul emphasise that creation itself awaits redemption and restoration (Romans 8:19–22). This indicates that God’s salvation plan extends beyond human beings to include the entire created order. Therefore, environmental care becomes an expression of Christian hope and participation in God’s restorative mission.

The Niger Delta region of Nigeria provides a significant context for examining the role of Christian ethics in addressing environmental degradation. The region, consisting of oil-producing communities primarily located in states such as Rivers, Bayelsa, Delta, Akwa Ibom, and other neighbouring areas, has experienced extensive environmental challenges associated with petroleum exploration and exploitation. Since the discovery of commercial oil resources in Nigeria, petroleum has become the foundation of the nation’s economy; however, oil exploration has also generated serious ecological consequences for many communities.

Oil pollution remains one of the most critical environmental challenges affecting the Niger Delta. Oil spills, gas flaring, pipeline failures, and industrial waste have contributed to the contamination of rivers, farmlands, fishing grounds, and ecosystems. These environmental impacts have significantly affected the livelihoods of communities whose economies traditionally depend on agriculture and fishing.

The consequences of oil pollution extend beyond environmental damage to include social, economic, health, and ethical dimensions. Many Niger Delta communities have experienced loss of livelihoods, destruction of traditional occupations, poverty, and increased social tensions. Environmental degradation in the region raises important questions about justice, human dignity, corporate responsibility, government accountability, and the moral obligations of religious communities.

Scholars examining the Niger Delta crisis have highlighted the relationship between environmental destruction and social injustice. Nnimmo Bassey argues that ecological damage in the Niger Delta represents a form of environmental injustice because local communities bear the consequences of resource exploitation while receiving limited benefits from petroleum wealth (Bassey, 2012). Similarly, Ikechi Mgbeoji highlights the complex relationship between resource exploitation, environmental rights, and community welfare in Nigeria’s oil-producing regions (Mgbeoji, 2003).

Within this context, the role of Christian churches becomes increasingly important. Churches in the Niger Delta operate within communities directly affected by environmental degradation. Beyond their spiritual responsibilities, churches possess moral authority, social networks, and community influence that position them as potential agents of environmental awareness, advocacy, reconciliation, and sustainable development.

Christian churches have historically contributed to social transformation in Nigeria through education, healthcare, humanitarian assistance, and community development. However, environmental issues have not always received equal attention within church teachings and ministry priorities. While churches often address personal morality, spiritual growth, and social concerns, ecological responsibility remains an area requiring greater theological engagement.

The involvement of churches in environmental issues represents an extension of Christian mission. If creation belongs to God, then protecting the environment becomes part of Christian obedience and witness. Environmental degradation affects human communities created in God’s image, and therefore ecological responsibility is connected with concerns for justice, compassion, and human wellbeing.

Selected churches in Rivers and Bayelsa States provide an important setting for examining how Christian communities respond to oil pollution. These states represent some of the areas most affected by petroleum-related environmental challenges. Churches within these communities encounter members whose daily lives are directly influenced by polluted environments, declining fisheries, damaged farmland, and economic hardship.

The theological response of churches may include environmental preaching, ecological education, community advocacy, humanitarian support, partnerships with environmental organisations, and theological reflection on creation care. Examining these responses provides insight into the extent to which Christian ethics influences environmental responsibility within Nigerian churches.

However, despite the seriousness of environmental degradation in the Niger Delta, limited theological attention has been given to the role of Christian ethics in responding to oil pollution. Much of the discussion surrounding the Niger Delta crisis has focused on political, economic, legal, and environmental dimensions, while the contribution of religious institutions requires further investigation.

Therefore, this study examines “The Role of Christian Ethics in Addressing Environmental Degradation: A Theological Response to Oil Pollution in the Niger Delta Region of Nigeria.” The study focuses on selected churches in Rivers and Bayelsa States to explore how Christian ethical principles shape responses to environmental challenges and how churches contribute to ecological justice, environmental awareness, and community transformation.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The Niger Delta region represents one of the most significant examples of the tension between economic development and environmental sustainability in Nigeria. Although petroleum resources have contributed substantially to national revenue, oil exploration activities have produced severe environmental consequences for many local communities. Oil spills, gas flaring, and pollution have damaged ecosystems, threatened livelihoods, and created long-term social and health challenges.

The problem is that environmental degradation in the Niger Delta has often been approached primarily as an economic, political, or technological issue, with insufficient attention given to its ethical and theological dimensions. Environmental destruction raises fundamental moral questions concerning human responsibility toward creation, justice for affected communities, and accountability for actions that harm the environment.

From a Christian ethical perspective, environmental degradation represents a failure of responsible stewardship. The biblical understanding of humanity’s relationship with creation emphasises care, responsibility, and accountability before God. However, contemporary responses to environmental challenges have often neglected the potential contribution of Christian theology and church communities.

Although churches in Rivers and Bayelsa States are located within communities affected by oil pollution, the extent of their involvement in addressing environmental challenges remains unclear. Many churches provide spiritual support and humanitarian assistance, but questions remain regarding whether environmental stewardship has become an integral component of their theological teaching and social engagement.

Another problem is that some Christian communities may view environmental issues as secondary to spiritual concerns. This perspective creates a separation between faith and ecological responsibility, despite biblical teachings that present creation care as part of humanity’s relationship with God. The absence of strong ecological theology within some churches may limit their ability to respond effectively to environmental injustice.

Furthermore, affected communities often require more than spiritual encouragement; they require advocacy, awareness, empowerment, and collective action. Churches possess significant social influence, but insufficient understanding exists regarding how they can contribute to environmental justice and sustainable development in oil-producing communities.

Despite growing global discussions on ecological theology and Christian environmental ethics, limited research has examined how Nigerian churches respond theologically and practically to oil pollution in the Niger Delta. Existing studies have focused largely on environmental science, government policy, and corporate responsibility, leaving a gap concerning the role of Christian ethics and ecclesial responses.

Therefore, the problem addressed by this study is the inadequate exploration of the role of Christian ethics in responding to environmental degradation caused by oil pollution in the Niger Delta region. This study seeks to examine the theological perspectives, ethical responsibilities, and practical responses of selected churches in Rivers and Bayelsa States toward environmental challenges affecting their communities.

1.3 Aim of the Study

The main aim of this study is to examine the role of Christian ethics in addressing environmental degradation, with particular emphasis on the theological response to oil pollution in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria. The study seeks to explore the biblical and theological foundations of environmental responsibility and investigate how Christian ethical principles influence the responses of selected churches in Rivers and Bayelsa States toward ecological challenges caused by petroleum exploitation.

The study also aims to evaluate the contribution of churches to environmental awareness, ecological justice, community advocacy, and sustainable development within oil-producing communities. Furthermore, it seeks to examine how Christian theology can provide ethical frameworks for responding to environmental degradation and promoting responsible relationships between humanity and God’s creation.

1.4 Objectives of the Study

The specific objectives of the study are to:

1. Examine the biblical and theological foundations of Christian environmental ethics and creation stewardship.
2. Investigate the relationship between Christian ethical principles and environmental responsibility within contemporary Nigerian Christianity.
3. Examine the causes and consequences of oil pollution and environmental degradation in the Niger Delta region.
4. Explore the responses of selected churches in Rivers and Bayelsa States toward oil pollution and environmental challenges.

1.5 Research Questions

The study is guided by the following research questions:

1. What are the biblical and theological foundations of Christian environmental ethics?
2. How does Christian theology understand humanity’s responsibility toward creation?
3. What are the major environmental consequences of oil pollution in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria?
4. How do selected churches in Rivers and Bayelsa States respond to environmental degradation caused by oil pollution?

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is significant because it addresses the growing need for theological engagement with environmental challenges in contemporary society. Environmental degradation has traditionally been examined through scientific, economic, and political perspectives; however, the ecological crisis also raises fundamental theological and ethical questions concerning humanity’s relationship with God, creation, and other human beings. By examining Christian ethics as a response to environmental degradation, this study contributes to a broader understanding of ecological responsibility within Christian theology.

The study contributes to biblical and theological scholarship by highlighting the environmental dimensions of Christian faith. Although some interpretations of Christianity have historically focused primarily on human salvation, contemporary ecological theology demonstrates that God’s redemptive purposes include the restoration of the entire created order. This research reinforces the understanding that care for creation is not an optional social activity but an important aspect of Christian discipleship and obedience to God.

The study is significant for Christian environmental ethics because it examines how theological principles such as stewardship, justice, compassion, responsibility, and reconciliation can guide responses to ecological challenges. The Niger Delta oil pollution crisis provides an important context for demonstrating how ethical failures in human interaction with creation can produce suffering among vulnerable communities. By applying Christian ethical principles, the study seeks to contribute to conversations about ecological justice and responsible resource management.

For churches in Rivers and Bayelsa States, the study provides an opportunity for theological reflection on their role within communities affected by environmental degradation. Churches are influential social institutions with moral authority, community networks, and organisational structures that can contribute to environmental awareness and advocacy. The study may assist churches in developing ministries and programmes that address environmental challenges alongside spiritual responsibilities.

The study is also significant for pastors, church leaders, and Christian educators because it expands understanding of Christian mission. Traditional ministry approaches often emphasise evangelism, discipleship, worship, and social assistance. However, the realities of environmental degradation demonstrate that Christian mission must also include care for creation and advocacy for communities experiencing ecological injustice. The findings of this study may encourage church leaders to integrate environmental theology into preaching, teaching, and ministry programmes.

Furthermore, the study contributes to social justice discussions within the Niger Delta context. Oil pollution has affected the livelihoods, health, and social conditions of many communities. Christian ethics emphasises concern for vulnerable populations and calls believers to defend justice and human dignity. Therefore, examining the church’s role in environmental issues contributes to understanding how faith communities can participate in social transformation.

The research is significant for environmental organisations, policymakers, and community stakeholders because it highlights the potential contribution of religious institutions to environmental solutions. Churches often possess extensive community influence and can serve as partners in environmental education, conflict resolution, and sustainable development initiatives. Understanding their theological motivations and practical responses can strengthen cooperation between religious and environmental actors.

The study also contributes to African Christian theology by examining environmental responsibility within a Nigerian context. African theological discussions have traditionally emphasised themes such as community, liberation, identity, and justice. However, ecological challenges require further development of African ecological theology that considers the relationship between traditional African respect for nature, Christian teachings on creation, and contemporary environmental realities.

The research is particularly relevant because the Niger Delta represents a context where environmental issues intersect with questions of justice, human rights, economic inequality, and community survival. A theological examination of oil pollution provides a holistic perspective that considers not only environmental damage but also the moral responsibilities of individuals, corporations, governments, and religious communities.

Finally, the study will serve as a resource for future scholars researching ecological theology, Christian ethics, environmental justice, African Christianity, and the role of religious institutions in addressing social challenges. It provides a foundation for further studies exploring how Christian communities can contribute to environmental sustainability and ecological restoration.

1.7 Scope of the Study

This study focuses on the role of Christian ethics in addressing environmental degradation, with particular emphasis on theological responses to oil pollution in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria. The study examines how Christian ethical principles influence environmental awareness, responsibility, and action among selected churches in Rivers and Bayelsa States.

The theological scope of the study covers biblical and Christian ethical perspectives on creation care, stewardship, justice, responsibility, and humanity’s relationship with the natural environment. It explores relevant biblical passages concerning creation, environmental responsibility, and the moral obligations of human beings toward the earth.

The environmental scope focuses specifically on oil pollution and its consequences within the Niger Delta region. Issues examined include oil spills, gas flaring, ecosystem destruction, loss of livelihoods, environmental injustice, and the social consequences experienced by affected communities.

The geographical scope of the study is limited to selected churches in Rivers and Bayelsa States. These states are chosen because they are among the major oil-producing areas in Nigeria and have experienced significant environmental challenges associated with petroleum exploration. The study examines how churches operating within these contexts understand and respond to ecological concerns.

The ecclesiastical scope focuses on Christian churches and their theological responses to environmental issues. The study considers how churches engage through preaching, environmental education, social action, advocacy, community support, and other ministry activities related to ecological concerns.

The study does not examine all environmental problems in Nigeria or all causes of ecological degradation. It specifically focuses on oil pollution in the Niger Delta and the role of Christian ethics in responding to this challenge. Other environmental issues such as deforestation, urban waste management, and climate change are considered only where they relate directly to broader discussions of environmental responsibility.

1.8 Definition of Terms

Christian Ethics

Christian ethics refers to the theological study of moral principles, values, and responsibilities derived from Christian beliefs and teachings. It examines how Christians should live and act in relation to God, other human beings, and the created world.

Environmental Degradation

Environmental degradation refers to the deterioration of the natural environment caused by human activities that negatively affect ecosystems, natural resources, and human wellbeing. It includes pollution, habitat destruction, resource depletion, and ecological imbalance.

Environmental Ethics

Environmental ethics refers to moral reflection concerning human relationships with nature and responsibilities toward protecting and preserving the environment. Within Christian theology, environmental ethics considers creation as God’s gift requiring responsible stewardship.

Oil Pollution

Oil pollution refers to the contamination of land, water, and ecosystems resulting from petroleum exploration, production, transportation, and industrial activities. In the Niger Delta context, it includes oil spills, pipeline leaks, and pollution associated with oil extraction.

Niger Delta Region

The Niger Delta region refers to the oil-producing area of southern Nigeria characterised by extensive petroleum resources and diverse ecological systems. It includes states such as Rivers, Bayelsa, Delta, Akwa Ibom, and other neighbouring areas.

Christian Stewardship

Christian stewardship refers to the belief that human beings are entrusted by God with responsibility to care for and manage creation. It emphasises accountability, sustainability, and responsible use of natural resources.

Ecological Justice

Ecological justice refers to the ethical principle that environmental benefits and burdens should be distributed fairly among individuals and communities. It recognises that environmental destruction often disproportionately affects vulnerable populations.

Theological Response

A theological response refers to the interpretation and application of Christian beliefs, doctrines, and ethical principles in addressing contemporary issues. In this study, it refers to how Christian theology responds to environmental degradation and oil pollution.
