INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

The continuity and preservation of Christian doctrinal identity across generations remain central concerns within contemporary Christian communities. Throughout church history, Christian traditions have depended on intentional systems of teaching, discipleship, and spiritual formation to transmit biblical truths, theological convictions, ethical values, and ecclesiastical practices from one generation to another. The early Christian community demonstrated this pattern through deliberate instruction and relational guidance, where mature believers mentored younger disciples in faith, doctrine, and ministry responsibilities (Acts 2:42; 2 Timothy 2:2). The process of passing faith from one generation to another has therefore been understood not merely as the transfer of information but as the formation of spiritual identity through relationships, community participation, and lived examples (Foster, 2018).

Christian mentorship represents one of the oldest and most effective approaches for sustaining spiritual maturity and doctrinal continuity within the church. Unlike formal theological education that often emphasizes cognitive understanding, mentorship involves personal relationships where experienced believers guide younger Christians through teaching, correction, encouragement, and modelling of Christian virtues. According to Stanley and Clinton (2017), mentoring within Christian contexts involves a developmental relationship in which a more experienced believer assists another person in discovering and fulfilling God’s purposes. This relational approach reflects the biblical pattern of Moses mentoring Joshua, Elijah guiding Elisha, and Paul discipling Timothy, demonstrating that spiritual heritage is preserved through intentional investment in emerging leaders.

In Nigeria, Christianity has experienced remarkable growth, particularly through Pentecostal, evangelical, and charismatic movements. The rapid expansion of churches has created significant opportunities for evangelism, discipleship, and social transformation. According to Pew Research Center (2019), Nigeria remains one of the countries with the largest Christian populations globally, with Christianity playing a major role in shaping social, cultural, and moral identities. However, numerical growth does not automatically guarantee doctrinal stability. The increasing diversity of theological expressions, digital religious influences, prosperity-oriented teachings, and changing cultural values have raised concerns about how churches preserve their foundational beliefs among younger generations.

The emergence of younger Christian generations within a highly digitalized and globalized environment has significantly transformed how religious knowledge is acquired and practiced. Young Christians increasingly interact with multiple sources of theological information through social media platforms, online sermons, podcasts, and international Christian movements. While these platforms provide opportunities for spiritual learning and global engagement, they also expose emerging generations to conflicting interpretations of Scripture and diverse theological perspectives. Campbell (2021) argues that digital religion has reshaped religious authority by allowing individuals to access and interpret religious content outside traditional institutional structures. This development creates challenges for churches seeking to maintain doctrinal clarity and theological identity.

Doctrinal identity refers to the collection of theological beliefs, biblical interpretations, moral convictions, and spiritual practices that define a Christian community. It provides churches with a sense of continuity, belonging, and theological direction. Without effective mechanisms for doctrinal transmission, churches may experience theological fragmentation, weakened spiritual commitment, and generational disconnect. McGrath (2020) notes that Christian identity is shaped by the preservation and communication of theological traditions, which enable communities of faith to maintain continuity with their historical and biblical foundations.

Christian mentorship systems provide a strategic framework for addressing these challenges by creating intentional relationships between mature believers and younger Christians. As founding leaders age and younger generations assume greater responsibility, the absence of structured mentorship systems may create gaps in theological understanding and ministry continuity. According to Adeboye (2020), sustainable church growth requires intentional leadership development and spiritual formation processes that prepare younger believers to preserve the vision and values of the church.

Historically, African Christian communities have placed strong emphasis on communal learning and spiritual apprenticeship. The African worldview often values intergenerational relationships, where knowledge, values, and traditions are transmitted through close interaction between elders and younger members. However, modernization, urbanization, and changing youth cultures have weakened some traditional patterns of relational learning. Kalu (2018) observes that African Christianity continues to negotiate between inherited theological traditions and contemporary cultural realities, requiring effective methods for maintaining Christian identity.

Furthermore, emerging generations face unique spiritual challenges including secular influences, individualism, materialism, and competing worldviews. Many young Christians are exposed to religious content that emphasizes personal success, emotional experiences, or popular culture rather than biblical discipleship and theological depth. This situation has increased the need for churches to develop structured mentorship systems that intentionally cultivate doctrinal understanding, spiritual discipline, and commitment to Christian values. According to Barna Group (2021), younger Christians increasingly desire authentic spiritual relationships and communities where faith can be explored meaningfully.

Christian mentorship systems therefore serve as bridges between theological heritage and contemporary Christian experiences. Through mentoring relationships, older generations can communicate biblical teachings, church traditions, and spiritual wisdom while younger believers gain opportunities for growth, leadership preparation, and active participation in ministry. Effective mentorship does not seek to prevent cultural engagement but enables younger Christians to engage society while maintaining theological convictions.

Despite the importance of mentorship, many churches in Nigeria lack formalized mentorship structures. In some congregations, discipleship is largely dependent on Sunday sermons, periodic programmes, or informal relationships that may not provide sufficient depth for doctrinal formation. This limitation raises questions concerning how effectively churches are preparing emerging generations to preserve Christian doctrinal identity. 1.2 Statement of the Problem

The rapid growth of Christianity in Nigeria has created significant opportunities for evangelism and church expansion; however, the preservation of doctrinal identity among emerging generations remains a major challenge. Many churches have experienced increasing membership among young people, but numerical growth has not always been accompanied by strong theological formation. Some younger Christians demonstrate limited understanding of foundational Christian doctrines, denominational beliefs, and biblical principles that historically shaped their churches. This situation raises concerns about whether churches are effectively transferring their theological heritage to succeeding generations.

One major problem is the decline of intentional discipleship and mentorship structures within many contemporary churches. While churches often organize worship services, conferences, and evangelistic programmes, fewer provide systematic mentoring relationships that allow mature Christians to guide younger believers personally. As a result, many young Christians depend heavily on external sources such as social media influencers, online preachers, and popular religious personalities for theological guidance. This unrestricted access to diverse religious interpretations may contribute to confusion, doctrinal inconsistency, and weakening of denominational identity.

Another problem is the increasing generational gap between older church leaders and emerging Christian generations. Younger believers often experience Christianity within different social and cultural realities compared with previous generations. Without intentional engagement between older and younger members, valuable theological traditions and spiritual practices may not be effectively transmitted. The absence of meaningful mentorship relationships can create a disconnect between the historical identity of churches and the faith expressions of younger Christians.

Furthermore, some churches in Nigeria emphasize numerical expansion, financial success, and public visibility while paying insufficient attention to deep spiritual formation and doctrinal education. This imbalance may result in Christians who participate actively in church activities but lack strong theological foundations. According to Stetzer and Nation (2018), churches that prioritize discipleship processes rather than merely attracting attendees are more likely to produce spiritually mature believers capable of sustaining Christian identity.

The problem is also intensified by contemporary cultural influences that challenge traditional Christian values. Globalization, secular ideologies, changing moral perspectives, and digital media have introduced alternative worldviews that compete with biblical teachings. Emerging generations require guidance that helps them critically engage these influences while remaining committed to Christian doctrine. Without effective mentorship systems, churches may struggle to maintain theological continuity in a rapidly changing environment.

Although previous studies have examined discipleship, church growth, and leadership development, limited attention has been given to the specific role of Christian mentorship systems in preserving doctrinal identity among emerging generations in Nigeria. This gap creates the need for further investigation into how mentorship practices contribute to doctrinal transmission, spiritual formation, and generational continuity within Nigerian churches.

Therefore, this study seeks to examine the role of Christian mentorship systems in preserving church doctrinal identity among emerging generations in Nigeria. The study intends to determine whether intentional Christian mentorship significantly contributes to maintaining theological beliefs, spiritual values, and denominational identity among younger Christians.

1.3 Aim of the Study

1.4 Objectives of the Study

The specific objectives are to:

1. Examine the relationship between Christian mentorship systems and doctrinal awareness among emerging generations in Nigerian churches.

3. Assess the contribution of Christian mentorship to the preservation of church theological traditions.
4. Identify challenges affecting effective Christian mentorship systems in Nigerian churches.

1.6 Research Hypothesis

H₀: Christian mentorship systems do not significantly contribute to the preservation of church doctrinal identity among emerging generations in Nigeria.

1.7 Significance of the Study

This study will be significant to church leaders, pastors, Christian educators, youth ministry coordinators, theological institutions, and researchers.

For church leaders, the study will provide insights into the importance of developing structured mentorship systems that strengthen doctrinal continuity and leadership succession. It will assist pastors and ministry leaders in designing effective discipleship strategies that address the spiritual needs of younger Christians.

For youth ministry practitioners, the study will highlight approaches for engaging emerging generations through relational discipleship rather than relying exclusively on traditional teaching methods. It will demonstrate how mentorship can promote spiritual maturity, commitment, and theological understanding among young believers.

The study will also benefit theological institutions by contributing knowledge on Christian formation, discipleship, and ministry leadership development within the Nigerian context. Researchers may use the findings as a foundation for further studies on church growth, generational transition, and Christian identity.

1.8 Scope of the Study

The study focuses on the role of Christian mentorship systems in preserving church doctrinal identity among emerging generations in Nigeria. The study examines mentorship practices, doctrinal awareness, spiritual formation, and challenges affecting mentorship structures. Geographically, the study is limited to selected churches in Nigeria.
