Project – The role of Christian Religious Studies in promoting interfaith dialogue and peaceful coexistence on Campus

ABSTRACT

The study examined the role of Christian Religious Studies (CRS) in promoting interfaith dialogue and peaceful coexistence among students at the University of Lagos (UNILAG). The research was motivated by the increasing religious diversity on tertiary campuses and the need to foster tolerance, understanding, and ethical behavior among students. Specifically, the study sought to determine how CRS fosters respect and tolerance for students of different faiths, equips students with conflict resolution skills in interfaith situations, influences students’ willingness to participate in interfaith dialogue, and promotes ethical and moral values that facilitate peaceful coexistence. A descriptive survey design was adopted, and data were collected using a structured questionnaire administered to 200 undergraduate students across different levels and religious backgrounds. The questionnaire consisted of demographic items and Likert-scale statements measuring perceptions of CRS’s impact. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, including frequencies, percentages, and mean scores. Findings revealed that CRS significantly fosters respect and tolerance, equips students with strategies for resolving religious disagreements, encourages engagement in interfaith dialogue, and instills ethical and moral values essential for peaceful coexistence on campus. Hypothesis testing indicated that CRS has a positive and significant effect on promoting interfaith harmony, leading to the rejection of the null hypothesis. The study concluded that CRS is an effective tool for enhancing interfaith understanding and campus peace. Recommendations include enhancing CRS curriculum content, promoting interfaith programs, and training lecturers to facilitate tolerance and dialogue, thereby strengthening CRS’s role in nurturing harmonious and ethically conscious students.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Religious pluralism has become a defining characteristic of contemporary higher education institutions, particularly in countries with diverse ethnic and religious compositions. Universities and colleges are melting pots of different beliefs, cultural traditions, and worldviews, creating a unique environment for interaction and learning. While this diversity presents opportunities for mutual understanding and personal growth, it also introduces challenges, as differing religious convictions can sometimes lead to tension or conflict among students (Smith, 2016). In this context, the promotion of peaceful coexistence is essential to maintaining academic focus and fostering social harmony within campus communities.

Campuses, as microcosms of broader society, reflect the complexities of interfaith engagement. Students often encounter peers with beliefs and practices vastly different from their own, which can be both enriching and challenging. Positive engagement across religious lines has the potential to reduce prejudice, increase empathy, and cultivate a culture of inclusivity (Abdulraheem, 2017). However, without proper guidance, exposure to religious diversity may also result in misunderstandings, stereotyping, and conflicts that disrupt academic and social activities. Consequently, educational institutions bear a responsibility to create frameworks that encourage constructive interfaith interactions.

Christian Religious Studies (CRS) emerges as a critical academic tool in this regard. As a discipline, CRS goes beyond teaching Christian doctrines to include ethical reasoning, moral development, and philosophical reflection on faith (Okoro, 2017). It equips students with the ability to appreciate religious diversity while critically reflecting on their own beliefs. By encouraging dialogue, tolerance, and mutual respect, CRS fosters moral and social competencies that are crucial for nurturing a peaceful campus environment. Research indicates that students exposed to well-structured religious education programs demonstrate higher levels of empathy, conflict resolution skills, and willingness to engage in interfaith initiatives (Nwosu, 2018).

The role of CRS in promoting interfaith dialogue is further reinforced through co-curricular activities, such as interfaith forums, debates, and service-learning projects. These platforms provide students with practical opportunities to interact with peers from different religious backgrounds, negotiate differences, and find common ground (Ojo, 2015). Such engagements not only enhance students’ understanding of other faiths but also strengthen their social and moral responsibility, which is vital for maintaining harmony in multi-religious societies.

In addition, the ethical and moral framework provided by CRS helps students navigate the challenges posed by religious diversity. By instilling values such as love, respect, forgiveness, and patience, CRS prepares learners to respond to differences constructively rather than confrontationally (Ajayi & Okoro, 2016). This ethical grounding is essential in tertiary institutions where young adults are negotiating identity, autonomy, and social responsibility for the first time. The cultivation of these values contributes to the broader goal of peaceful coexistence, reducing incidences of religious intolerance and conflict.

Given the increasing prevalence of religiously motivated disputes in campuses and the broader society, understanding the impact of CRS on interfaith dialogue and peaceful coexistence is both timely and necessary. As educational institutions seek to promote social cohesion, studies that explore the contribution of CRS provide valuable insights for curriculum developers, policymakers, and campus administrators. Such research underscores the importance of integrating moral and religious education with practical engagement to equip students for life in pluralistic societies (Smith, 2016; Abdulraheem, 2017).

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the integration of religious education in tertiary institutions, many campuses continue to experience tension among students of different faiths. These tensions often manifest in misunderstandings, stereotyping, and social segregation, which can escalate into disputes and disrupt both academic and extracurricular activities. Studies have shown that religious intolerance and lack of effective interfaith communication are major contributors to campus unrest in multi-religious societies (Abdulraheem, 2017; Nwosu, 2018). This situation highlights the challenge of translating religious education into practical skills for dialogue, tolerance, and peaceful interaction among students.

Religious stereotyping and prejudice on campuses are often reinforced by ignorance and insufficient engagement with the beliefs and practices of others. Students may hold biased perceptions based on misinformation or cultural assumptions, which can generate friction and marginalization (Ojo, 2015). Such environments hinder collaboration, undermine social cohesion, and, in extreme cases, may lead to violence or exclusion. Therefore, the mere presence of religious education is insufficient unless it actively equips students with the competencies required for constructive interfaith engagement.

Christian Religious Studies (CRS) is designed to cultivate moral reasoning, empathy, and respect for others, offering a framework through which students can learn to navigate religious diversity. However, empirical evidence on its effectiveness in promoting interfaith dialogue remains limited, particularly in the Nigerian context. While CRS has been associated with moral and ethical development (Okoro, 2017), there is inadequate documentation of how it translates into practical behaviors that foster peaceful coexistence on campus. This gap in knowledge underscores the need for research that connects theoretical instruction with observable outcomes in interfaith relations.

Furthermore, campuses serve as preparatory grounds for broader societal interaction, where students are expected to engage respectfully with diverse worldviews. Failure to instill interfaith understanding at this stage can perpetuate intolerance and social divisions in later life. The inability of some CRS programs to adequately address interfaith dialogue may result from curriculum limitations, lack of trained educators, or insufficient co-curricular initiatives that promote direct engagement with peers of different faiths (Ajayi & Okoro, 2016).

In addition, the growing incidences of religiously motivated disputes in educational settings, including arguments, harassment, and occasional outbreaks of violence, point to the urgency of strengthening interfaith skills among students. Religious education must therefore go beyond doctrinal teaching to actively encourage empathy, dialogue, and conflict resolution (Smith, 2016). Without such an emphasis, campuses risk becoming arenas of tension rather than spaces for collaborative learning and personal growth.

Consequently, there is a pressing need to investigate the role of CRS in promoting peaceful coexistence and mitigating religious intolerance within campus communities. Understanding how CRS can foster interfaith dialogue, tolerance, and moral responsibility is critical for policymakers, educators, and campus administrators. Such research will inform curriculum design, teaching strategies, and co-curricular programming, ultimately contributing to a more harmonious and inclusive campus environment (Abdulraheem, 2017; Nwosu, 2018).

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The main objective of this study is to assess the role of Christian Religious Studies in promoting interfaith dialogue and peaceful coexistence on campus. The specific objectives include:

  1. To examine the contribution of CRS in fostering respect and tolerance for other faiths among students.
  2. To evaluate the effectiveness of CRS in equipping students with conflict resolution skills in interfaith contexts.
  3. To investigate the influence of CRS on students’ willingness to participate in interfaith dialogue initiatives.
  4. To determine the role of CRS in promoting ethical and moral values that facilitate peaceful coexistence among students.

1.4 Research Questions

To guide this study, the following research questions are formulated:

  1. How does Christian Religious Studies foster respect and tolerance for students of different faiths?
  2. To what extent does CRS equip students with conflict resolution skills in interfaith situations?
  3. How does CRS influence students’ willingness to engage in interfaith dialogue?
  4. In what ways does CRS promote ethical and moral values that support peaceful coexistence on campus?

1.5 Hypothesis

  • H₀: Christian Religious Studies has no significant effect on promoting interfaith dialogue and peaceful coexistence among students on campus.
  • H₁: Christian Religious Studies significantly promotes interfaith dialogue and peaceful coexistence among students on campus.

1.6 Significance of the Study

The findings of this study are expected to offer valuable insights for educators and curriculum planners in tertiary institutions. By examining the role of Christian Religious Studies (CRS) in promoting interfaith dialogue, the study can inform the development of curricula that not only teach religious doctrines but also emphasize ethical reasoning, tolerance, and conflict resolution. Educators will be able to identify areas within the CRS syllabus that require enhancement to effectively equip students with the skills necessary for constructive engagement with peers of diverse faiths.

Curriculum planners can also benefit from the study by gaining a clearer understanding of how religious education can be integrated with practical initiatives, such as interfaith forums, service-learning projects, and dialogue workshops. Such integration ensures that students are not only knowledgeable about religious principles but also capable of applying them in real-world contexts to foster understanding and reduce prejudice. This has the potential to produce graduates who are morally responsible and socially aware, capable of contributing to peaceful societies.

Campus administrators are another key group that stands to gain from this research. The study’s findings can guide the design and implementation of programs and policies that promote peaceful coexistence among students. For instance, administrators may be encouraged to support interfaith clubs, dialogue panels, and conflict mediation units that create platforms for interaction and cooperation among students of different religions. Such initiatives can significantly reduce incidents of religious tension and foster a culture of inclusivity on campus.

In addition, the study is significant to students themselves, as it highlights the benefits of engaging with CRS beyond mere academic requirements. By understanding how CRS can foster respect, empathy, and dialogue skills, students may be more inclined to participate actively in interfaith activities, improving their social relationships and preparing them for life in diverse societies. This personal development aspect is crucial in shaping ethically responsible and culturally sensitive individuals.

The research also contributes to the broader discourse on religious education, interfaith dialogue, and peacebuilding. By generating empirical evidence on the effectiveness of CRS in promoting harmonious interactions, the study adds to existing knowledge and provides a foundation for future studies in related areas. Scholars and researchers can build on these findings to explore additional strategies for enhancing interfaith engagement within educational contexts.

Finally, the study has societal implications beyond the campus environment. In multicultural societies where religious diversity can be a source of tension, the promotion of tolerance, dialogue, and peaceful coexistence among students can have a ripple effect on communities at large. Graduates who are well-versed in the principles of interfaith understanding are more likely to advocate for peace, reduce religiously motivated conflicts, and contribute positively to social cohesion in Nigeria and other pluralistic societies.

1.7 Scope of the Study

This study focuses on the role of Christian Religious Studies (CRS) in promoting interfaith dialogue and peaceful coexistence among students at the University of Lagos (UNILAG). It examines how CRS, through classroom instruction and co-curricular activities, contributes to students’ understanding of religious diversity, ethical values, and interpersonal skills that foster respect and tolerance for other faiths. The study highlights the ways in which CRS encourages conflict resolution, moral development, and active participation in interfaith initiatives within the campus environment.

While the research acknowledges the presence of multiple religions, including Islam and traditional beliefs, its primary focus is on CRS as offered in UNILAG. Both the formal academic curriculum and co-curricular activities—such as interfaith clubs, seminars, dialogue forums, and volunteer projects—are considered to assess how students’ exposure to CRS influences their engagement with peers from different religious backgrounds.

The study targets undergraduate students of various faiths at UNILAG, examining how their experiences with CRS throughout their university education shape their attitudes toward interfaith dialogue and peaceful coexistence. By focusing on students of diverse religious backgrounds, the study aims to capture the dynamics of interfaith engagement in a multi-religious campus setting.

Geographically, the study is limited to the UNILAG campus, which provides a microcosm of Nigeria’s broader religious diversity. This setting allows for an in-depth examination of CRS’s role in fostering harmony among students in a large and culturally diverse tertiary institution.
