CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

Communication is a fundamental element in every organization, including religious institutions. It serves as the process through which information, ideas, instructions, and feedback are shared among individuals and groups for effective coordination and decision-making. In the church setting, communication plays a vital role in ensuring that members understand the vision, mission, programs, and expectations of the church. Without effective communication, church administration becomes disorganized, unclear, and inefficient.

In contemporary Pentecostal churches, communication is not only a tool for information dissemination but also a means of fostering unity, participation, and spiritual growth among members. Churches rely on communication to coordinate worship services, organize evangelism programs, manage church departments, and engage members in various spiritual and administrative activities. According to Lussier and Achua (2015), effective communication enhances organizational coordination, reduces misunderstandings, and improves overall performance.

Biblically, communication has always been central to God’s interaction with His people. In the Old Testament, God communicated with prophets to guide the nation of Israel, while in the New Testament, Jesus Christ communicated the message of salvation through teaching, parables, and direct interaction with His disciples. The early church also relied heavily on communication to coordinate activities, as seen in Acts 2:42–47, where believers shared information, resources, and fellowship in unity.

In the 21st century, communication in the church has evolved significantly due to technological advancement. Churches now use social media platforms, mobile applications, websites, live streaming, and electronic messaging systems to reach members and the wider audience. Laudon and Laudon (2014) note that technological communication systems improve efficiency, speed, and accessibility of information in modern organizations, including religious institutions.

Despite these advancements, many churches still experience communication gaps that affect administration and membership participation. Miscommunication or lack of clear communication between church leaders and members often leads to misunderstanding, low participation in church programs, and reduced commitment. Robbins and Judge (2013) argue that poor communication negatively affects organizational effectiveness and employee or member engagement.

Pentecostal churches, particularly in urban areas such as Lagos State, have experienced rapid growth in membership and structure. The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) is one of the largest Pentecostal denominations with widespread influence and organized administrative structure. In Agege, Lagos, RCCG churches operate multiple parishes with large congregations that require effective communication systems to coordinate activities and ensure smooth administration.

However, as membership increases, communication becomes more complex and challenging. Church leaders must ensure that messages are clearly transmitted from the leadership level to various departments and members. According to Northouse (2018), effective leadership communication is essential for organizational coordination, motivation, and conflict resolution.

Furthermore, communication enhances membership participation in church activities such as evangelism, prayer meetings, choir activities, welfare programs, and leadership development. When members are well-informed, they are more likely to actively participate in church programs. Davis and Newstrom (2002) explain that communication improves motivation, engagement, and organizational commitment.

Therefore, communication remains a key factor in enhancing church administration and membership participation. This study seeks to examine the role of communication in enhancing church administration and membership participation in Pentecostal churches, with particular reference to Redeemed Christian Church of God, Agege, Lagos State.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the rapid growth of Pentecostal churches in Nigeria, communication remains a major challenge affecting church administration and membership participation. In many churches, information is not effectively communicated between leaders and members, resulting in misunderstanding, low participation, and administrative inefficiency.

In some cases, church members are not adequately informed about church programs, financial decisions, or leadership directives. This often leads to confusion, lack of interest, and poor attendance at church activities. According to Robbins and Coulter (2012), ineffective communication reduces organizational efficiency and weakens coordination among members.

Furthermore, the increasing size of Pentecostal congregations, especially in urban areas like Agege, Lagos, has made communication more complex. Large church structures require well-organized communication systems to ensure that information reaches all levels of membership. However, many churches still rely on informal or inconsistent communication channels that are not effective for large congregations.

Another problem is the over-reliance on one-way communication, where church leaders pass information without receiving adequate feedback from members. This limits participation and reduces the sense of belonging among members. Lussier and Achua (2015) emphasize that effective communication must involve feedback and interaction to achieve organizational effectiveness.

In RCCG Agege, Lagos State, despite the structured nature of the denomination, communication gaps still exist in some parishes, affecting coordination of activities, membership involvement, and administrative efficiency. Miscommunication or delayed communication may lead to poor attendance, misunderstanding of church programs, and reduced member commitment.

It is against this background that this study seeks to examine the role of communication in enhancing church administration and membership participation in Pentecostal churches, with particular reference to RCCG Agege, Lagos State.

1.3 Purpose of the Study

The main purpose of this study is to examine the role of communication in enhancing church administration and membership participation in Pentecostal churches.

The specific objectives are to:

1. examine the concept of communication in church administration.
2. identify communication challenges in Pentecostal churches.
3. determine the impact of communication on membership participation.
4. examine the role of communication in improving church administration.

1.4 Research Questions

The following research questions guide the study:

1. What is the concept of communication in church administration?
2. What communication challenges exist in Pentecostal churches?
3. What is the impact of communication on membership participation?
4. What role does communication play in enhancing church administration?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

The following null hypothesis will be tested:

H₀: Communication has no significant impact on church administration and membership participation in Redeemed Christian Church of God, Agege, Lagos State.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study will be beneficial to church leaders, administrators, pastors, researchers, and members of Pentecostal churches. It will help church leaders understand the importance of effective communication in improving administration and increasing membership participation.

The study will also assist church administrators in developing better communication systems that enhance coordination, information flow, and feedback mechanisms within the church.

Furthermore, the findings will contribute to academic literature on church administration, communication, and organizational behavior, serving as a reference for future researchers.

1.7 Scope of the Study

This study focuses on the role of communication in enhancing church administration and membership participation in Pentecostal churches, with particular reference to RCCG Agege, Lagos State. The study covers communication methods, administrative coordination, membership participation, and leadership communication strategies.

1.8 Definition of Terms

Communication: The process of sharing information, ideas, and instructions between church leaders and members.

Church Administration: The coordination and management of church activities, resources, and programs for effective ministry.

Membership Participation: The involvement of church members in spiritual, social, and administrative church activities.

Pentecostal Church: A Christian denomination emphasizing the work of the Holy Spirit, spiritual gifts, and evangelism.

RCCG: Redeemed Christian Church of God is a global Pentecostal denomination with strong presence in Nigeria and worldwide.
