INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Cultural Arts encompass the diverse artistic expressions, practices, and traditions that reflect the identity, values, and heritage of a society (UNESCO, 2006). In Nigeria, cultural arts include music, dance, drama, festivals, crafts, storytelling, and other indigenous artistic practices. These forms of cultural expression play a significant role in socialization, education, and the transmission of societal values, particularly among adolescents, who are at a formative stage of identity development (Okafor, 2014).

National identity refers to the sense of belonging, shared values, and collective consciousness that unite members of a nation (Smith, 1991). Among Nigerian adolescents, fostering national identity is crucial for social cohesion, patriotism, and the development of civic responsibility. Cultural arts serve as a medium through which young people learn about their history, heritage, and values, reinforcing their connection to the Nigerian nation (Ekwueme, 2010).

Research indicates that engaging in cultural arts positively influences adolescents’ understanding of national symbols, traditions, and collective heritage (Adewale, 2016). Activities such as participating in cultural festivals, performing traditional dances, and creating indigenous art can foster pride, respect for diversity, and a sense of unity among young Nigerians. However, globalization, westernization, and the proliferation of digital media have led to decreased interest in indigenous cultural practices among adolescents, threatening the development of a strong national identity (Nwosu, 2018).

In urban areas like Asokoro, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, adolescents are particularly exposed to diverse cultural influences, and integrating cultural arts into their education may provide a means of grounding them in Nigerian heritage while promoting unity and patriotism. Understanding the role of cultural arts in shaping national identity is therefore essential for educators, policymakers, and cultural organizations seeking to foster a cohesive and culturally aware generation of Nigerians.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the recognized importance of cultural arts in nation-building, many Nigerian adolescents show limited engagement with indigenous cultural practices, especially in urban centers such as Asokoro, FCT. Factors such as westernized lifestyles, the dominance of digital entertainment, and inadequate emphasis on cultural education in schools contribute to declining interest in cultural arts (Nwosu, 2018).

This decline threatens the development of national identity among adolescents, resulting in diminished understanding of cultural heritage, weak social cohesion, and reduced civic responsibility. Additionally, schools and communities often lack structured programs that integrate cultural arts into adolescent development, leaving a gap in both practical exposure and awareness of Nigerian traditions (Adewale, 2016).

Given these challenges, there is a need for empirical research to investigate the role of cultural arts in promoting national identity among Nigerian adolescents in Asokoro. Such a study would provide insights into the effectiveness of cultural arts as a tool for fostering patriotism, social cohesion, and a sense of belonging among young Nigerians.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The main objective of this study is to examine the role of cultural arts in promoting national identity among Nigerian adolescents in Asokoro, FCT Abuja. The specific objectives are:

1. To determine the influence of participation in cultural arts on adolescents’ awareness of Nigerian heritage and traditions.

2. To examine the effect of cultural arts engagement on adolescents’ sense of national pride and unity.

3. To assess the role of cultural arts in shaping civic responsibility and patriotic attitudes among adolescents.

1.4 Research Questions

The study seeks to answer the following research questions:

1. To what extent does participation in cultural arts influence adolescents’ awareness of Nigerian heritage and traditions?

2. How does engagement in cultural arts affect adolescents’ sense of national pride and unity?

3. What role does participation in cultural arts play in shaping civic responsibility and patriotic attitudes among adolescents?

1.5 Hypothesis

Ho₁: There is no significant relationship between participation in cultural arts and the promotion of national identity among Nigerian adolescents in Asokoro, FCT Abuja.

1.6 Significance of the Study

The study is significant in several ways:

1. Adolescents: The findings will encourage young people to engage with cultural arts, enhancing their knowledge of Nigerian heritage and fostering a sense of national identity.

2. Educators: Teachers and school administrators can design curricula that integrate cultural arts to promote patriotism and social cohesion among students.

3. Policy Makers: The study will provide evidence for government agencies and cultural organizations to support policies and programs that preserve and promote Nigerian cultural heritage.

4. Future Research: The study will serve as a foundation for further research on the intersection of cultural arts, adolescent development, and national identity in Nigeria.

1.7 Scope of the Study

The study focuses on adolescents in secondary schools and community youth centers within Asokoro, FCT Abuja. It examines the influence of participation in cultural arts—including music, dance, drama, storytelling, and festivals—on adolescents’ awareness of heritage, national pride, unity, and civic responsibility. The research is limited to cultural arts activities within the local context of Asokoro.
