INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Drama and Theatre Arts are integral components of the educational curriculum, providing students with opportunities for self-expression, creativity, and social interaction (Ogunyemi, 2015). Drama involves the enactment of stories or scenarios through performance, while Theatre Arts encompasses a broader spectrum, including stagecraft, performance, and audience engagement (Efland, 2002). Together, these disciplines serve as powerful tools for developing students’ communication skills, which are essential for academic success and social competence.

Communication skills encompass the ability to convey ideas effectively, articulate thoughts clearly, and engage in active listening (Adeyemo, 2018). In Junior Secondary Schools, students are at a critical stage of cognitive and social development, and enhancing their communication abilities prepares them for future academic, professional, and interpersonal engagements (Obayi, 2017). Drama and Theatre Arts encourage students to engage in dialogue, role-play, storytelling, and collaborative projects, all of which cultivate verbal and non-verbal communication competencies.

Globally, studies have shown that participation in drama activities enhances students’ self-confidence, public speaking skills, and interpersonal interactions (Heathcote, 1991; Jackson, 2001). In Nigeria, however, the integration of Drama and Theatre Arts into the curriculum faces challenges such as inadequate teaching resources, limited teacher training, and insufficient emphasis on performance-based learning (Okonkwo, 2016). Despite these constraints, Drama and Theatre Arts remain potentially effective avenues for improving communication skills among junior secondary school students, particularly in urban centers like Ikorodu, Lagos State, where the demand for effective communication in a multicultural and dynamic environment is high.

Drama and Theatre Arts not only develop expressive skills but also nurture critical thinking, empathy, and teamwork, all of which are components of effective communication (Neelands, 2008). Thus, exploring the role of these subjects in enhancing communication skills can provide valuable insights for curriculum development, teaching strategies, and educational policy formulation in Nigeria.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the recognized benefits of Drama and Theatre Arts in fostering communication skills, many Junior Secondary Schools in Ikorodu struggle to maximize their potential. Research indicates that students often lack confidence in public speaking and effective interpersonal communication, even after exposure to Drama and Theatre Arts lessons (Adeyemo, 2018). Several factors contribute to this problem, including inadequate instructional materials, large class sizes, and teachers’ limited expertise in employing interactive and performance-based methods (Okonkwo, 2016).

Furthermore, the focus of the school system on examination-oriented curricula has led to a reduction in practical and creative subjects such as Drama and Theatre Arts. As a result, students may not develop the communication competencies necessary for academic and social success. This underscores the need for empirical research to investigate the extent to which Drama and Theatre Arts influence communication skills in junior secondary school students in Ikorodu, Lagos, to guide educators and policymakers in enhancing these critical skills.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The main objective of this study is to examine the role of Drama and Theatre Arts in enhancing communication skills among Junior Secondary School students in Ikorodu, Lagos. The specific objectives are:

1. To determine the extent to which participation in Drama activities improves students’ verbal communication skills.

2. To examine how Theatre Arts activities influence students’ non-verbal communication abilities.

3. To assess the impact of collaborative Drama and Theatre Arts projects on students’ confidence and interpersonal communication.

1.4 Research Questions

The study seeks to answer the following research questions:

1. To what extent does participation in Drama activities enhance students’ verbal communication skills?

2. How do Theatre Arts activities influence students’ non-verbal communication abilities?

3. What is the impact of collaborative Drama and Theatre Arts projects on students’ confidence and interpersonal communication skills?

1.5 Hypothesis

Ho₁: There is no significant relationship between participation in Drama and Theatre Arts activities and the communication skills of Junior Secondary School students in Ikorodu, Lagos.

1.6 Significance of the Study

The findings of this study are expected to benefit:

1. Students: By highlighting how Drama and Theatre Arts enhance communication skills, students may become more engaged and confident in expressing themselves verbally and non-verbally.

2. Teachers: The study will provide insights into effective teaching strategies that promote communication skills through practical, performance-based methods.

3. Policy Makers: Education authorities can use the findings to improve curriculum design, provide resources, and train teachers to effectively integrate Drama and Theatre Arts in schools.

4. Future Researchers: The study will serve as a foundation for further research on the relationship between arts education and essential life skills in Nigerian schools.

1.7 Scope of the Study

The study focuses on Junior Secondary School students in Ikorodu, Lagos State. It examines how participation in Drama and Theatre Arts activities influences students’ verbal and non-verbal communication skills, interpersonal confidence, and teamwork. The research is limited to schools within Ikorodu to provide an in-depth and localized understanding of the role of Drama and Theatre Arts in communication development.
