Project – The Role of Entrepreneurial Innovation in Enhancing Competitiveness among Nigerian Startups
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Entrepreneurial innovation has emerged as a critical driver of competitiveness and sustainability in contemporary business environments. Globally, startups are increasingly leveraging innovative practices to differentiate themselves, penetrate markets, and achieve sustainable growth (Schumpeter, 1934; Drucker, 2014). In Nigeria, startups have become a significant component of the national economy, contributing to job creation, poverty reduction, and technological advancement (Aremu & Adeyemi, 2017). Despite their importance, many Nigerian startups face challenges in maintaining competitiveness due to intense market competition, limited resources, infrastructural deficits, and weak institutional support (Oloke, 2018).
Entrepreneurial innovation encompasses the development of new products, services, processes, or business models that provide unique value to customers and enhance organizational performance (Teece, 2010). For startups, innovation is often a strategic necessity, as their survival and growth largely depend on the ability to offer differentiated solutions in dynamic and often unpredictable markets (Ratten, 2020). In Nigeria, innovation has manifested in various forms, including technological innovations, digital platforms, creative marketing strategies, and operational efficiencies aimed at reducing costs and improving customer experience (Nwosu, 2019).
However, empirical evidence suggests that despite awareness of the importance of innovation, Nigerian startups often underutilize innovative strategies due to limited access to funding, inadequate entrepreneurial training, and a lack of structured support systems (Ojo & Adewale, 2020). Consequently, understanding how entrepreneurial innovation can be harnessed to enhance competitiveness among Nigerian startups is crucial for policymakers, investors, and business owners seeking to foster a resilient and dynamic entrepreneurial ecosystem.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Startups in Nigeria operate in a highly competitive and rapidly evolving business landscape. Many fail within the first few years of operation, primarily due to limited market differentiation, lack of innovative capacity, and resource constraints (Aremu & Adeyemi, 2017). While entrepreneurial innovation has been identified globally as a key determinant of business competitiveness, Nigerian startups face specific challenges, including infrastructural deficiencies, unstable regulatory frameworks, and insufficient access to technological resources (Oloke, 2018; Nwosu, 2019).
Furthermore, although several startups exhibit creative business ideas, their inability to systematically translate innovation into competitive advantage limits their growth potential and market sustainability (Ojo & Adewale, 2020). This gap between innovative capability and practical competitiveness underscores the need for research into how entrepreneurial innovation can be effectively leveraged to enhance startup competitiveness in Nigeria. Without such insights, many startups may continue to struggle to survive, thereby affecting economic development and job creation efforts.
