Project – The Role of Entrepreneurial Orientation on Business Growth: A Case Study of Startups in Ankpa LGA, Kogi State
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Entrepreneurial orientation (EO) refers to the strategic posture and practices of a business that reflect innovativeness, proactiveness, risk-taking, competitive aggressiveness, and autonomy (Lumpkin & Dess, 1996). EO is widely recognized as a critical driver of firm growth, particularly among startups and small enterprises, because it shapes the way businesses identify opportunities, respond to market demands, and innovate to achieve competitive advantage (Rauch et al., 2009). Startups that exhibit high entrepreneurial orientation tend to introduce novel products or services, adopt innovative business processes, and proactively seek market opportunities, all of which contribute to sustained growth and performance (Covin & Wales, 2019).
In Nigeria, startups are pivotal to economic development, job creation, and industrial diversification. Ankpa Local Government Area (LGA) in Kogi State has seen a growing number of startups in sectors such as agriculture, services, fashion, ICT, and small-scale manufacturing. Despite their potential, many startups in Ankpa face challenges such as limited access to finance, infrastructural deficiencies, inadequate managerial skills, and intense competition. In this context, the entrepreneurial orientation of founders and managers becomes crucial in determining whether startups can survive, scale, and contribute to local economic development.
Research has shown that EO dimensions—innovative behavior, risk-taking, proactiveness, and competitive aggressiveness—positively influence firm growth by facilitating the exploitation of market opportunities and the adoption of strategic initiatives (Wiklund & Shepherd, 2005). For example, startups that embrace innovation are more likely to develop unique products, differentiate themselves from competitors, and capture market share. Proactive startups anticipate market changes, respond to customer needs, and adapt quickly to emerging trends, thereby enhancing growth potential. Similarly, a calculated risk-taking approach allows startups to invest in new ventures and expand operations without compromising long-term sustainability.
Although the role of EO in business growth is widely acknowledged globally, there is limited empirical evidence specifically examining startups in Kogi State, particularly Ankpa LGA. Local socioeconomic factors, cultural context, and market dynamics may influence how EO manifests in startup behavior and affects growth outcomes. Understanding the relationship between entrepreneurial orientation and business growth in this context is essential for entrepreneurs, policymakers, and development practitioners seeking to foster startup success and stimulate regional economic development.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the recognized importance of entrepreneurial orientation in driving business growth, many startups in Ankpa LGA continue to struggle with limited growth, market penetration, and sustainability. Observations indicate that a significant number of startups fail to expand beyond initial operations, experience slow revenue growth, or exit the market prematurely due to poor strategic planning, lack of innovation, and inadequate risk management.
Many startups also lack the managerial and organizational capacity to translate entrepreneurial orientation into measurable growth outcomes. While some founders exhibit innovative and proactive tendencies, these are often constrained by limited access to finance, infrastructural deficiencies, and low levels of business knowledge. There is also a lack of systematic research on how the different dimensions of entrepreneurial orientation—innovativeness, risk-taking, proactiveness, and competitive aggressiveness—specifically influence business growth among startups in Ankpa LGA.
The problem, therefore, is that without empirical evidence, startups, policymakers, and business support organizations may be unable to design effective strategies to enhance entrepreneurial behaviors that drive business growth. This study seeks to investigate the role of entrepreneurial orientation on business growth among startups in Ankpa LGA, Kogi State, thereby providing actionable insights to strengthen entrepreneurial practices and improve growth outcomes.
