ABSTRACT

The study examined the Role of Ethnic and Religious Identity Politics in Nigeria: A case study of the 2023 General Elections. Four research objectives were adopted for the study, namely: to examine the impact of ethnic identity politics on voter behavior in Nigeria during the 2023 General Elections; to analyze the role of religious identity in shaping political alliances and voting patterns in Nigeria; to investigate how ethnic and religious identity politics influence candidate selection and campaign strategies in Elections; to assess the implications of ethnic and religious identity politics on electoral outcomes and political stability in Nigeria. The study employed the descriptive survey design. The target population consists of voters from three selected Parties, namely APC (Yoruba), PDP (Hausa) and LP (Igbo). To select the needed samples for this study, the researcher used a total number of one hundred (100) voters from three selected Parties, namely APC (Yoruba), PDP (Hausa) and LP (Igbo). The research hypothesis was tested using Chi-Square Statistics. The study recommended that there is a pressing need for civic education programs that emphasize the importance of informed voting based on policy issues rather than solely on religious affiliations. The study concluded that Religious identity can shape political alliances and voting patterns in Nigeria.
