Project – The Role of Faith in Overcoming Life Challenges: A Study of Selected Pentecostal Churches in Ogun State
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
Human life is characterised by experiences of success, failure, uncertainty, loss, disappointment, illness, financial difficulty, unemployment, relationship problems and other circumstances that may challenge individuals’ emotional, psychological, social and spiritual wellbeing. The manner in which individuals interpret and respond to such experiences is influenced by several factors, including personal beliefs, social relationships, material resources and religious convictions. Religion and spirituality have long been identified as important resources through which individuals attempt to understand suffering, derive meaning from difficult experiences and develop strategies for coping with adversity. Pargament (1997) conceptualised religious coping as the use of religious beliefs, practices and resources to understand and manage significant life stressors. Similarly, Ano and Vasconcelles (2005), in a meta-analysis of 49 studies involving 105 effect sizes, found that positive and negative forms of religious coping were associated with corresponding patterns of psychological adjustment to stress. These findings demonstrate that faith can constitute an important psychological and spiritual resource in the face of life challenges, although its effects depend partly on the manner in which religious coping is employed.
Faith occupies a particularly important position in Christianity because Christian belief places trust in God at the centre of the believer’s relationship with life, suffering and the future. Biblical teachings encourage believers to trust God during periods of uncertainty, seek divine guidance and maintain hope in difficult circumstances. For example, Proverbs 3:5–6 encourages believers to trust in the Lord rather than relying solely on their own understanding, while Philippians 4:6–7 encourages prayer and thanksgiving in situations of anxiety. Similarly, Romans 5:3–5 connects perseverance in suffering with character and hope. From a theological perspective, therefore, Christian faith is not simply intellectual agreement with religious doctrines but involves trust, dependence, hope and practical commitment to God. Pargament (1997) similarly argued that religion can provide frameworks through which people interpret stressful experiences and identify sources of meaning, control, comfort and transformation.
The relevance of faith becomes more evident when individuals encounter challenges that appear difficult to control through ordinary personal resources. Financial hardship, unemployment, family conflict, health problems, bereavement, academic difficulties, business failure and other forms of adversity can produce uncertainty and emotional distress. Religious coping may help individuals interpret these experiences within a broader framework of meaning and may provide emotional and social resources through prayer, worship, scripture, spiritual guidance and support from religious communities. A systematic review of religious coping during the COVID-19 pandemic found relationships between religious coping and several positive mental-health indicators, including wellbeing, life satisfaction, happiness and post-traumatic growth, although findings concerning negative mental-health outcomes were more complex. Pankowski and Wytrychiewicz-Pankowska (2023) therefore demonstrate that religion may provide important coping resources during major crises, while also emphasising the need to distinguish constructive religious coping from forms that may be associated with poorer outcomes.
The distinction between positive and negative religious coping is important in understanding the role of faith in overcoming life challenges. Religious faith does not automatically produce positive outcomes simply because an individual is religious. Pargament, Smith, Koenig, and Perez (1998) distinguished between positive religious coping patterns, such as seeking spiritual support, benevolent religious reappraisal, collaborative religious coping and religious forgiveness, and negative religious coping patterns, such as spiritual discontent, punitive religious reappraisal and interpersonal religious discontent. Ano and Vasconcelles (2005) subsequently found that positive religious coping tended to be associated with positive psychological adjustment, whereas negative religious coping tended to be associated with poorer adjustment. Consequently, a serious examination of faith and life challenges should consider not only whether people have faith but also how that faith is expressed and applied when individuals encounter adversity.
Faith may also provide social and communal resources that help individuals respond to difficult circumstances. Pentecostal churches, in particular, commonly provide opportunities for collective worship, prayer meetings, pastoral counselling, fellowship, testimonies and mutual support. These activities can provide individuals experiencing hardship with social networks and a sense of belonging, while religious narratives can help members interpret difficult experiences in terms of hope, perseverance and divine purpose. Koenig (2018), in reviewing research on religion and health, observed that religious involvement may provide social support, promote meaning and influence coping behaviours. Likewise, a systematic review of religion and spirituality in disaster contexts concluded that positive effects often operate not only through personal beliefs but also through access to resources provided by religious and spiritual communities (Aten et al., 2019). Thus, the potential role of faith in overcoming life challenges may extend beyond an individual’s private belief system to include the supportive structures of the religious community.
The Pentecostal tradition provides a particularly relevant context for examining the relationship between faith and life challenges. Pentecostal Christianity places considerable emphasis on personal conversion, prayer, the Holy Spirit, divine intervention, biblical promises, spiritual gifts and experiential encounters with God. These characteristics can influence how adherents understand illness, financial difficulties, family problems, uncertainty and other forms of adversity. However, the role of faith within Pentecostalism should not be reduced to expectations of miraculous intervention. Pentecostal faith may also involve perseverance, communal support, moral transformation, hope and active engagement with life’s difficulties. Recent scholarship on religious coping has similarly emphasised the diversity of religious coping mechanisms and the importance of understanding how people use theocentric practices such as surrender to God, meaning-making, spiritual renewal and personal transformation in responding to difficult circumstances (Pargament, 2011; Pankowski & Wytrychiewicz-Pankowska, 2026).
The Nigerian context provides an important setting for examining these issues because churches occupy a prominent position in the religious and social lives of many Nigerians. In Pentecostal communities, faith is frequently expressed through prayer, fasting, worship, biblical meditation, testimonies, counselling and participation in church fellowship. These practices may influence how individuals understand and respond to challenges relating to economic pressure, employment, health, family life and personal aspirations. At the same time, contemporary scholarship cautions against assuming that religious faith always produces positive outcomes. Research on religious coping has shown that spiritual struggle, negative religious interpretations and unresolved religious conflict may be associated with psychological difficulties, while positive spiritual coping may be associated with better adjustment (Ano & Vasconcelles, 2005; Pankowski & Wytrychiewicz-Pankowska, 2023). The present study therefore focuses on selected Pentecostal churches in Ogun State in order to examine how members understand and utilise faith when confronted with life challenges and the extent to which faith is perceived as a resource for coping, resilience, hope and personal adjustment.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Life challenges are unavoidable, but the ability of individuals to cope effectively with adversity varies considerably. Many people experience financial hardship, unemployment, business difficulties, health-related problems, marital and family conflicts, bereavement, academic pressure and uncertainty about the future. Such challenges can affect emotional wellbeing, relationships, motivation and everyday functioning. Religious faith is often presented within Christian communities as an important source of strength during difficult periods, yet the actual ways in which believers use faith to respond to adversity are not always clearly understood. Research on religious coping demonstrates that individuals may employ both positive and negative religious responses to stress, meaning that religious involvement alone cannot be assumed to guarantee successful adjustment (Ano & Vasconcelles, 2005; Pargament et al., 1998).
A second problem concerns the gap between theological teachings about faith and the practical experiences of Christians facing serious life challenges. Pentecostal churches frequently encourage members to exercise faith, pray, trust God and remain hopeful during difficult circumstances. However, individuals may respond differently when prayers appear unanswered, financial problems persist, illness continues, relationships break down or expected opportunities fail to materialise. Some believers may experience strengthened hope and perseverance, whereas others may experience doubt, disappointment, spiritual struggle or feelings of abandonment. The literature indicates that religious coping can take both positive and negative forms, and negative religious coping can be associated with poorer psychological adjustment (Pargament et al., 1998; Ano & Vasconcelles, 2005). Therefore, it is necessary to investigate how Pentecostal Christians actually experience and interpret faith during periods of adversity rather than assuming that religious teaching automatically produces effective coping.
A third problem is that faith may be understood narrowly as the expectation of supernatural intervention, potentially overlooking other ways in which faith may contribute to coping and resilience. Christian faith can involve prayer and expectations of divine intervention, but it may also provide meaning, hope, emotional support, moral guidance, perseverance and access to supportive religious communities. Research in disaster contexts has found that the benefits associated with religion and spirituality may arise partly from meaning-making and access to resources through religious communities rather than from belief alone (Aten et al., 2019). Similarly, recent reviews of religious coping have identified diverse mechanisms, including surrender to God, spiritual renewal, meaning-making and personal transformation (Pankowski & Wytrychiewicz-Pankowska, 2026). The problem is therefore not simply whether Pentecostal Christians possess faith, but how faith is translated into practical coping responses when members face difficult circumstances.
A fourth problem is the limited context-specific empirical evidence on the role of faith in overcoming life challenges among members of Pentecostal churches in Ogun State. Much of the established literature on religious coping has been conducted outside Nigeria, while the available international evidence may not adequately reflect the social, economic, cultural and religious experiences of Nigerian Pentecostal Christians. In addition, findings from studies conducted in other countries cannot automatically be generalised to churches and congregants in Ogun State. The COVID-19 literature, for example, demonstrates that religious coping can have complex relationships with mental-health outcomes, with positive and negative forms of coping producing different patterns (Pankowski & Wytrychiewicz-Pankowska, 2023). Consequently, there is a need for a local study that examines the forms of faith practised by Pentecostal Christians, the major challenges they encounter, how faith is applied in responding to these challenges, and the perceived outcomes of faith-based coping.
The central problem of this study, therefore, is the need to understand the practical role of Christian faith in helping Pentecostal church members respond to life challenges in the context of Ogun State. The study will investigate the nature of faith, the major life challenges experienced by members, the ways faith is applied in coping with such challenges, and the factors that may strengthen or hinder faith-based coping among members of selected Pentecostal churches.
1.3 Purpose of the Study
The main purpose of this study is to examine the role of faith in overcoming life challenges among members of selected Pentecostal churches in Ogun State.
Specifically, the study seeks to:
- examine the understanding and expression of faith among members of selected Pentecostal churches in Ogun State;
- identify the major life challenges experienced by members of selected Pentecostal churches in Ogun State;
- examine the role of faith in helping members cope with and overcome life challenges; and
- identify the factors that facilitate or hinder the effective use of faith in overcoming life challenges among members of selected Pentecostal churches.
1.4 Research Questions
The following research questions will guide the study:
- How do members of selected Pentecostal churches in Ogun State understand and express faith?
- What are the major life challenges experienced by members of selected Pentecostal churches in Ogun State?
- What role does faith play in helping members cope with and overcome life challenges?
- What factors facilitate or hinder the effective use of faith in overcoming life challenges among members of selected Pentecostal churches?
1.5 Research Hypothesis
The following null hypothesis will be tested at the 0.05 level of significance:
H₀: There is no significant relationship between the practice of faith and the ability of members of selected Pentecostal churches in Ogun State to cope with life challenges.
1.6 Significance of the Study
The study will be significant to Pentecostal church leaders because it will provide information on how members understand and apply faith when confronted with difficult circumstances. The findings may help pastors and church leaders develop more balanced teachings on faith, perseverance, prayer, responsible action and Christian responses to adversity.
The study will also benefit members of Pentecostal churches by providing a clearer understanding of the different ways faith can function as a resource during difficult experiences. It may help members appreciate that faith can involve prayer and trust in God while also involving perseverance, wise decision-making, social support, personal responsibility and constructive engagement with life circumstances.
Pastoral counsellors may also benefit from the study. The findings may assist them in understanding the religious beliefs that influence members’ responses to stress, disappointment and adversity. This may be particularly useful in counselling individuals who are experiencing spiritual struggles or who interpret prolonged difficulties through a religious framework.
The study will be relevant to Christian educators and theological institutions because it will contribute to discussions concerning practical Christian faith, suffering, hope, perseverance and religious coping. It may provide locally relevant material for teaching and research in Christian studies, pastoral theology, counselling and religious studies.
The study will further be useful to researchers because it will contribute to the growing literature on religion, faith, coping and resilience within an African and Nigerian context. It may provide a basis for comparative research involving Pentecostal churches in other states and denominations.
1.7 Scope of the Study
The study will focus on The Role of Faith in Overcoming Life Challenges: A Study of Selected Pentecostal Churches in Ogun State.
Geographically, the study will be conducted in selected Pentecostal churches in Ogun State. For manageable coverage, the study may focus on selected churches within Abeokuta South and Sagamu Local Government Areas.
The content scope will cover four major areas: understanding and expression of Christian faith; major life challenges experienced by church members; the role of faith in coping with and overcoming life challenges; and factors that facilitate or hinder effective faith-based coping.
The study will focus on adult members of selected Pentecostal churches and, where appropriate, pastors or church leaders who have experience in pastoral counselling, prayer ministry and supporting members experiencing difficult circumstances.
The study will not attempt to establish scientifically that supernatural events occur as a result of faith. Rather, it will examine the perceived and reported role of faith in helping Christian believers understand, cope with and respond to life challenges.
