Project – The Role of Health Education in Preventing Communicable Diseases among Secondary School Students in Enugu State, Nigeria
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
Health education is a vital aspect of school health programs aimed at improving students’ knowledge, attitudes, and practices concerning health-related behaviors. It equips young people with the information and skills necessary to prevent diseases, promote hygiene, and make informed health decisions (World Health Organization [WHO], 2018). In the context of developing countries like Nigeria, health education has been recognized as an essential tool in controlling communicable diseases that pose serious public health challenges (Adebayo & Odetola, 2020).
Communicable diseases such as malaria, typhoid fever, and HIV/AIDS remain major health concerns among adolescents in Nigeria, including Enugu State. These diseases are transmitted through agents such as mosquitoes, contaminated water, and unsafe sexual practices. School environments, where students interact closely, can serve as potential grounds for the spread of such infections if adequate preventive measures are not in place (Nwosu & Okafor, 2019).
Health education in schools provides a structured approach to disease prevention by promoting personal hygiene, environmental sanitation, healthy lifestyle choices, and awareness of disease transmission modes. According to Adeyemi (2021), students who receive consistent health education are more likely to adopt preventive behaviors such as regular handwashing, proper waste disposal, and safe sexual practices. Moreover, school-based health education can empower students to serve as change agents by spreading health messages within their families and communities (Ekechukwu, 2020).
In Enugu State, several initiatives have been introduced through health and education ministries to integrate health education into secondary school curricula. However, the extent to which these programs effectively reduce communicable disease prevalence among students remains uncertain. Therefore, this study seeks to examine the role of health education in preventing communicable diseases among secondary school students in Enugu State, Nigeria.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite continuous health education campaigns and inclusion of health-related topics in school curricula, communicable diseases such as malaria, typhoid, and HIV/AIDS persist among secondary school students in Enugu State. Many students still engage in risky behaviors such as poor sanitation practices, neglect of mosquito control measures, and unprotected sexual activities. Studies have shown that lack of awareness, misconceptions about disease transmission, and inadequate implementation of school health programs contribute to this situation (Okoro, 2018).
Furthermore, while some schools have functional health clubs and guidance programs, others lack trained health educators and materials for effective instruction. This inconsistency raises questions about the actual impact of school-based health education on students’ health behavior and disease prevention. Therefore, there is a need to assess how health education influences hygiene practices and helps prevent communicable diseases among secondary school students in Enugu State.
