Project – The Role of Intercessory Prayer in Church Growth and Spiritual Transformation: A Study of Selected Pentecostal Churches in Lagos State, Nigeria

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

Prayer occupies a central place in Christian theology and practice. From the Old Testament to the New Testament, prayer is presented as a means through which believers communicate with God, seek divine intervention, discern His will, express dependence upon Him, and participate in His purposes in the world. Although prayer takes different forms—including thanksgiving, worship, petition, confession and intercession—intercessory prayer has a distinctive orientation because it involves standing before God on behalf of other individuals, communities, institutions and nations. In this sense, intercessory prayer moves believers beyond personal needs to a ministry of spiritual concern for others. The biblical pattern is evident in the ministries of Abraham, Moses, Samuel, Daniel, Jesus Christ and the early Christian community.

The significance of prayer becomes particularly evident in the New Testament understanding of the church. The church did not emerge merely as a human institution but as a Spirit-empowered community whose mission was grounded in the purposes of God. Before Pentecost, the disciples were instructed to remain in Jerusalem and wait for the promise of the Father. Acts 1:14 records that they “all joined together constantly in prayer.” This prayerful waiting preceded the outpouring of the Holy Spirit in Acts 2 and the subsequent proclamation of the gospel. The sequence is significant for understanding the relationship between prayer, spiritual empowerment and Christian mission. Prayer was not presented as an optional activity but as part of the spiritual preparation of the community for effective witness.

The early church continued to demonstrate a strong commitment to corporate and intercessory prayer. In Acts 4:23–31, following threats from the authorities, the believers gathered and prayed for boldness to proclaim the word of God. Their prayer was followed by a manifestation of divine power: “the place in which they were gathered together was shaken,” and they were filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly (Acts 4:31, ESV). Similarly, Acts 12 presents the church praying earnestly for Peter while he was imprisoned, after which he was miraculously released. These accounts suggest that prayer was closely connected with the mission, resilience and spiritual vitality of the early Christian community.

The Apostle Paul also regarded intercession as an important responsibility of Christian believers. He repeatedly requested prayers from churches on behalf of his ministry. For example, in 1 Thessalonians 5:17–18, believers are instructed to “pray without ceasing” and to give thanks in all circumstances. In 1 Timothy 2:1, Paul urges that “supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people.” The language of intercession therefore establishes prayer as a communal ministry directed toward the welfare of others. Paul also connects prayer with evangelistic mission when he asks believers to pray that God would open doors for the proclamation of the gospel (Colossians 4:2–4).

Intercessory prayer is particularly significant within Pentecostal Christianity because Pentecostal spirituality generally places strong emphasis on the activity of the Holy Spirit, spiritual gifts, healing, deliverance, evangelism and experiential encounters with God. Pentecostal churches commonly understand prayer as an important avenue through which believers seek divine intervention and participate in God’s mission. Allan Anderson (2013) observes that Pentecostalism has become a major global Christian movement whose spirituality is characterised by an experiential emphasis on the Holy Spirit, prayer, healing, prophecy and evangelism. Consequently, prayer meetings, prayer chains, prayer vigils, intercessory departments, fasting programmes and other prayer activities have become prominent features of Pentecostal church life.

The growth of Pentecostal Christianity in Africa, and particularly in Nigeria, provides an important context for examining the relationship between prayer and church growth. Nigerian Pentecostalism has developed into a highly influential Christian movement with significant social and religious presence. Ojo (2006) explains that Pentecostalism in Nigeria developed through various renewal movements and increasingly became a major expression of contemporary Nigerian Christianity. Kalu (2008) similarly demonstrates that African Pentecostalism should be understood within the broader history of African Christianity, where spiritual experience, prayer, healing, deliverance and engagement with everyday social realities have played important roles.

Contemporary Nigerian Pentecostal churches have consequently developed extensive systems of evangelism, discipleship, prayer, church planting and Christian fellowship. Recent scholarship confirms the continuing significance of Pentecostal strategies in church expansion. Uroko (2024), for example, examines Pentecostal church growth in Nigeria and identifies evangelism, membership strategies and other institutional practices as important factors in the expansion of Pentecostal Christianity. Research on Nigerian Pentecostal churches also indicates that their growth cannot be explained by a single factor, but involves leadership, evangelism, institutional structures, social engagement and responses to changing Nigerian contexts.

Lagos State provides a particularly important environment for investigating these issues. Lagos is one of Nigeria’s largest urban centres and is characterised by high population density, religious diversity, migration, economic activity and rapid social change. Pentecostal churches are highly visible across Lagos, ranging from small congregations and fellowship groups to large ministries with extensive national and international networks. The urban environment creates both opportunities and challenges for church ministry. Churches operate in contexts where individuals experience economic pressures, family challenges, unemployment, social insecurity, moral concerns and competing religious and secular influences. Within such an environment, churches often depend on prayer not only for individual spiritual needs but also for evangelistic effectiveness, leadership, community transformation and institutional sustainability.

Church growth, however, should not be understood exclusively in numerical terms. In Christian theology, a growing church is expected to demonstrate both quantitative and qualitative development. Quantitative growth may involve increased membership, attendance, conversions, church planting and participation in ministry. Qualitative growth includes spiritual maturity, biblical understanding, holiness, love, unity, discipleship, service and conformity to the character of Christ. Acts 2:42–47 illustrates this multidimensional understanding of growth: the early believers devoted themselves to teaching, fellowship, breaking of bread and prayers, while the community experienced favour and numerical increase. Therefore, church growth involves the development of both the community’s numerical strength and its spiritual quality.

This distinction is important because a church may experience numerical expansion without corresponding spiritual transformation. The contemporary Pentecostal environment has witnessed significant growth, influence and institutional development, but scholars have also raised questions about aspects of prosperity-oriented and commercially influenced Pentecostal practice. Obadare (2022), for instance, examines the interaction between Nigerian Pentecostalism, popular culture and economic imperatives, while Smith (2021) discusses tensions surrounding prosperity theology, inequality and corruption in Nigeria. These discussions make it necessary to investigate spiritual practices that may help churches maintain a deeper theological and spiritual orientation amid rapid institutional growth.

Intercessory prayer may provide one such dimension. When believers pray consistently for the salvation of unbelievers, spiritual growth of members, healing of the sick, restoration of families, church leaders, missionaries and the wider society, prayer can cultivate a culture of dependence upon God and concern for others. Intercession may also encourage believers to become more deeply involved in the mission of the church. Rather than seeing Christianity primarily as a means of meeting personal needs, intercessory prayer encourages believers to carry the needs of others before God.

Spiritual transformation is another important dimension of the study. Christian transformation refers to a progressive process through which believers become increasingly conformed to the character and purposes of Christ. Romans 12:2 connects transformation with the renewal of the mind, while 2 Corinthians 3:18 describes believers as being transformed into Christ’s image. Prayer can contribute to this process by creating space for self-examination, repentance, dependence upon God, spiritual discipline and sensitivity to the Holy Spirit. Intercessory prayer, in particular, can cultivate compassion because the person praying is repeatedly required to consider the needs and welfare of others.

The connection between prayer and spiritual transformation is therefore not simply about receiving answers to prayer. It concerns the transformation of the people who pray. A congregation that regularly intercedes may develop stronger fellowship, compassion, spiritual discipline, commitment to evangelism and sensitivity to the needs of its community. Such characteristics can contribute indirectly to church growth because spiritually mature members are more likely to participate in evangelism, discipleship, service and other forms of ministry.

The ministry of Jesus provides an important model for this understanding of intercession. Jesus prayed for His disciples and for future believers. In John 17:20–23, He prayed not only for the apostles but also for those who would believe through their message. His prayer focused on their unity, protection and sanctification. Luke 22:32 also records Jesus telling Peter, “I have prayed for you, that your faith may not fail.” Jesus’ prayer ministry demonstrates that intercession can be directed toward the spiritual preservation, unity and maturity of others.

The Apostle Paul provides another significant model. His letters contain numerous prayers for the spiritual growth of Christian communities. In Ephesians 1:15–19, he prays that believers may receive wisdom and revelation and know the hope of their calling. In Ephesians 3:14–19, he prays that believers may be strengthened with power through the Spirit and rooted in love. In Philippians 1:9–11, he prays for increasing love, knowledge, discernment and spiritual fruitfulness. These prayers demonstrate that Christian intercession includes petitions for spiritual maturity rather than merely material or physical benefits.

Intercessory prayer can also be understood as an expression of Christian participation in God’s mission. The church’s mission includes proclaiming the gospel, making disciples, demonstrating Christian love and serving society. Prayer supports this mission by directing the church toward God’s purposes. In Matthew 9:37–38, Jesus instructed His disciples to pray that the Lord of the harvest would send workers into His harvest. The relationship between prayer and mission is therefore embedded in the teaching of Jesus Himself. Prayer precedes and accompanies Christian ministry.

In the Nigerian Pentecostal context, this relationship deserves systematic investigation. Although intercessory prayer is widely practised in Pentecostal churches, the extent to which it contributes to church growth and spiritual transformation may differ from one congregation to another. Some churches may have organised intercessory departments, while others may depend mainly on pastoral prayer or occasional corporate prayer. Some congregations may maintain weekly prayer meetings and prayer vigils, whereas others may place greater emphasis on preaching, music, media, evangelism or social programmes.

Furthermore, the popularity of prayer in Pentecostal Christianity does not automatically establish that every form of prayer ministry produces spiritual maturity or sustainable church growth. The effectiveness of intercessory prayer may depend on the theological understanding of prayer, consistency of participation, leadership support, biblical orientation, accountability and the extent to which prayer is connected with evangelism and discipleship. Consequently, an academic study is necessary to examine how intercessory prayer functions in actual Pentecostal congregations in Lagos State.

The rapid growth of Nigerian Pentecostal churches also makes the subject timely. Uroko (2024) notes that Pentecostal churches in Nigeria have adopted various strategies to attract and retain members, demonstrating that church growth is a complex phenomenon involving multiple factors. Recent historical research likewise shows that the expansion of major Nigerian Pentecostal churches has involved leadership, evangelism, church planting, institutionalisation and adaptation to changing social environments. The present study therefore does not assume that prayer is the only determinant of church growth. Instead, it seeks to investigate its particular contribution within the broader ministry environment.

The study is consequently anchored on the proposition that intercessory prayer may function as both a spiritual discipline and a ministry strategy. As a spiritual discipline, it may promote personal and communal transformation. As a ministry strategy, it may support evangelism, discipleship, pastoral care and mission. The study will examine these relationships within selected Pentecostal churches in Lagos State, Nigeria, with particular attention to how intercessory prayer is organised, practised and perceived by church leaders and members.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Prayer is widely recognised as an essential component of Christian life, and intercessory prayer occupies a prominent position in many Pentecostal churches in Nigeria. Numerous Pentecostal congregations organise prayer meetings, prayer vigils, prayer chains, fasting programmes and dedicated intercessory ministries. The prominence of these activities suggests that many churches consider prayer essential to spiritual vitality, evangelism, protection, healing and church development.

However, the presence of extensive prayer activities does not necessarily demonstrate their effectiveness in producing sustainable church growth and spiritual transformation. Some congregations may record increasing membership and attendance while experiencing challenges involving inadequate discipleship, weak member commitment, spiritual immaturity, leadership dependency and insufficient participation in ministry. This raises an important question: to what extent does intercessory prayer actually contribute to the growth and spiritual transformation of Pentecostal churches?

A further problem is the tendency to measure church growth primarily through numerical indicators. Attendance figures, membership registers, new branches, financial contributions and large programmes can provide useful information about institutional expansion, but these indicators do not necessarily demonstrate spiritual maturity. A congregation may become numerically large without a corresponding increase in biblical understanding, holiness, love, unity, service and Christ-like character. Consequently, there is a need to examine whether intercessory prayer contributes to the qualitative dimensions of church growth as well as the quantitative dimensions.

The problem is also theological and ministerial. Pentecostal churches strongly emphasise spiritual experience, divine intervention and the power of prayer, but the practice of prayer can sometimes become predominantly focused on personal needs, material prosperity, healing, deliverance and immediate solutions to individual problems. Such emphases can potentially reduce the broader biblical purpose of intercession, which includes praying for the church, leaders, unbelievers, missionaries, government, communities and the spiritual maturity of believers. Paul’s instruction in 1 Timothy 2:1–2 presents intercession as a broad ministry directed toward others and society. Therefore, it is necessary to examine whether intercessory prayer in selected Pentecostal churches reflects this broader biblical understanding.

Another problem concerns the relationship between prayer and evangelistic effectiveness. The early church combined prayer with proclamation, fellowship, discipleship and service. Acts 4:31 shows that prayer was associated with renewed boldness in proclaiming God’s word. Yet, in contemporary church practice, prayer programmes may sometimes operate separately from evangelism and discipleship. If intercessory prayer is to contribute meaningfully to church growth, it is important to establish whether prayer participants are subsequently encouraged and equipped to engage in evangelism, discipleship, leadership and Christian service.

The issue of spiritual transformation is equally important. Christian transformation involves more than emotional experiences during prayer meetings. It includes changes in attitudes, behaviour, relationships, moral conduct, commitment to Scripture, love for others and participation in Christian ministry. Romans 12:2, Ephesians 4:22–24 and 2 Corinthians 3:18 all present transformation as a continuing process in the life of believers. The problem, therefore, is whether regular participation in intercessory prayer is associated with observable evidence of spiritual transformation among members of Pentecostal churches.

The Nigerian Pentecostal context makes this question particularly significant. The movement has experienced considerable growth and influence, but scholars have identified tensions surrounding commercialisation, prosperity-oriented practices, institutional power and the relationship between spiritual claims and contemporary social realities. Smith (2021) and Obadare (2022) demonstrate some of the complexities surrounding contemporary Nigerian Pentecostalism. This does not invalidate Pentecostal spirituality; rather, it highlights the need for studies that examine concrete spiritual practices and their contribution to the church’s theological and social mission.

There is also a research gap concerning the specific relationship between intercessory prayer, church growth and spiritual transformation in selected Pentecostal churches in Lagos State. Existing literature on Nigerian Pentecostalism has extensively addressed church growth, leadership, prosperity theology, evangelism, social influence and institutional development. However, comparatively less attention is directed specifically toward intercessory prayer as a ministry practice and its perceived contribution to both numerical church growth and spiritual transformation at the congregational level.

The problem addressed by this study, therefore, is the lack of sufficient empirical understanding of whether and how organised intercessory prayer contributes to church growth and spiritual transformation in selected Pentecostal churches in Lagos State. The study seeks to determine the nature and frequency of intercessory prayer practices, assess their perceived contribution to church growth, examine their relationship with spiritual transformation, identify challenges affecting intercessory prayer ministries, and determine ways through which Pentecostal churches can strengthen intercessory prayer as a ministry.

1.3 Aim of the Study

The main aim of this study is to examine the role of intercessory prayer in church growth and spiritual transformation among selected Pentecostal churches in Lagos State, Nigeria.

1.4 Objectives of the Study

The specific objectives are to:

  1. examine the biblical and theological understanding of intercessory prayer in Pentecostal church ministry;
  2. identify the major forms and practices of intercessory prayer in selected Pentecostal churches in Lagos State;
  3. examine the perceived contribution of intercessory prayer to church growth in the selected Pentecostal churches;
  4. assess the influence of intercessory prayer on the spiritual transformation of church members.

1.5 Research Questions

The study will answer the following questions:

  1. What is the biblical and theological understanding of intercessory prayer in Pentecostal church ministry?
  2. What are the major forms and practices of intercessory prayer in selected Pentecostal churches in Lagos State?
  3. To what extent does intercessory prayer contribute to church growth in the selected Pentecostal churches?
  4. What influence does intercessory prayer have on the spiritual transformation of church members?

1.6 Research Hypothesis

The following null hypothesis will be tested at the 0.05 level of significance:

H₀: There is no statistically significant relationship between intercessory prayer and church growth and spiritual transformation among members of selected Pentecostal churches in Lagos State, Nigeria.

1.7 Significance of the Study

The study will be significant to Pentecostal church leaders, pastors, prayer coordinators, church members, theological educators, researchers and the wider Christian community.

Pentecostal church leaders: The findings may help pastors and church administrators understand the contribution of organised intercessory prayer to church development. The study may assist leaders in designing prayer ministries that are biblically grounded and connected with evangelism, discipleship and pastoral ministry.

Intercessory prayer ministries: Prayer coordinators and intercessors may benefit from a clearer understanding of the purpose and scope of intercession. The study may encourage prayer ministries to move beyond praying exclusively for individual needs toward sustained intercession for spiritual growth, evangelism, church leaders, families, communities and national concerns.

Church members: The study may encourage believers to understand prayer as a ministry of Christian responsibility rather than merely a means of obtaining personal blessings. It may promote greater participation in corporate prayer and strengthen members’ commitment to the spiritual welfare of others.

Pentecostal churches in Lagos State: The findings may provide practical information for improving prayer structures, prayer meetings and intercessory departments. Churches may also use the findings to evaluate whether their prayer programmes are contributing to discipleship, evangelism, unity and spiritual maturity.

Theological education: The study may contribute to discussions on practical theology, Pentecostal spirituality, ecclesiology and Christian ministry. It may demonstrate the importance of examining prayer not only as a theological doctrine but also as a lived practice within contemporary congregations.

Researchers: The study may serve as a reference for scholars interested in Pentecostalism, prayer, church growth, spiritual formation, practical theology and Nigerian Christianity. It may also provide a basis for future comparative studies involving other denominations, states or geographical contexts.

Christian mission: By examining the relationship between prayer, evangelism and spiritual transformation, the study may contribute to a broader understanding of how prayer supports the mission of the church in contemporary Nigerian society.

1.8 Scope of the Study

The study focuses on the role of intercessory prayer in church growth and spiritual transformation in selected Pentecostal churches in Lagos State, Nigeria.

Thematically, the study is limited to intercessory prayer practices, the organisation of prayer ministries, frequency of prayer activities, participation in intercessory prayer, perceived effects on church growth and perceived effects on spiritual transformation. Church growth will be considered in terms of both quantitative and qualitative dimensions, including membership development, evangelism, retention, participation in ministry, discipleship and spiritual maturity.

The study does not attempt to examine every factor responsible for Pentecostal church growth. Issues such as church leadership, financial management, media ministry, music, architecture, church branding and technological innovation may influence church growth, but they are not the principal focus of this study except where they relate directly to intercessory prayer.

Geographically, the research is restricted to selected Pentecostal churches in Lagos State. The findings will therefore be interpreted within the context of the selected churches and should not automatically be generalised to every Pentecostal church in Nigeria.
