INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Prayer occupies a central position in the Christian faith and serves as one of the most important means through which believers communicate with God. Throughout biblical history, prayer has been presented as a spiritual discipline that strengthens faith, deepens fellowship with God, and shapes the moral and spiritual lives of believers. Among the numerous prayers recorded in the Bible, the Lord’s Prayer stands out as the most significant model of prayer taught directly by Jesus Christ to His disciples. The prayer is recorded in the Gospel of Matthew 6:9–13 and Luke 11:2–4, where Jesus instructed His followers on the proper pattern and attitude of prayer. Because of its divine origin and theological richness, the Lord’s Prayer has become a foundational element in Christian worship, discipleship, and spiritual formation across Christian denominations worldwide.

Spiritual formation refers to the process through which believers grow in their relationship with God and become transformed into the character and likeness of Jesus Christ through the work of the Holy Spirit. According to Willard (2002), spiritual formation involves intentional practices and disciplines that shape the believer’s inner life and outward conduct. Christian education places strong emphasis on spiritual formation because it seeks not only to impart biblical knowledge but also to cultivate godly character, moral discipline, obedience, and spiritual maturity among believers. In many churches, prayer serves as a major tool for spiritual development because it encourages dependence on God, strengthens faith, promotes holiness, and nurtures personal devotion.

The Lord’s Prayer contains essential spiritual principles that guide believers in their relationship with God and others. The opening phrase, “Our Father in heaven,” teaches believers about God’s fatherhood, intimacy, and sovereignty. The petitions that follow emphasize worship, submission to God’s will, dependence on divine provision, forgiveness, spiritual protection, and victory over temptation. These themes collectively provide a framework for Christian living and spiritual growth. Foster (1998) observes that when believers consistently practice biblical prayer patterns, they develop deeper spiritual awareness and stronger commitment to Christian values. Consequently, the Lord’s Prayer is not merely a liturgical recitation but a transformative spiritual resource capable of shaping attitudes, behaviors, and values among Christian students.

Christian students today face numerous spiritual and moral challenges arising from secularization, materialism, technological distractions, peer pressure, and declining commitment to spiritual disciplines. Many young Christians struggle with maintaining consistent prayer lives, biblical devotion, and moral purity. In Nigeria, the increasing influence of social media, moral relativism, and worldly lifestyles has contributed to spiritual instability among many youths and students. Christian educators and church leaders have therefore become increasingly concerned about the spiritual growth and discipleship of students within church settings. The need to strengthen spiritual formation among Christian students has made the study of biblical models of prayer highly relevant in contemporary Christian education.

The Lord’s Prayer has historically played a significant role in Christian instruction and discipleship. In the early church, the prayer was taught to converts as part of catechetical instruction and spiritual preparation for Christian living. According to McGrath (2017), the prayer served as a summary of Christian doctrine and spiritual practice in many early Christian communities. Churches across denominations continue to recite and teach the Lord’s Prayer during worship services, Bible studies, youth fellowships, and discipleship classes. However, despite its frequent use, many Christian students often recite the prayer mechanically without understanding its deeper spiritual implications and transformative power. This situation raises questions concerning the effectiveness of the Lord’s Prayer in promoting genuine spiritual formation among Christian students.

In Lagos State, Nigeria, churches play a major role in the religious and moral upbringing of youths and students. Many churches organize Bible study sessions, prayer meetings, youth conferences, and discipleship programmes aimed at nurturing the spiritual lives of young believers. Nevertheless, reports of declining moral standards, weak commitment to spiritual disciplines, and inconsistent Christian lifestyles among some Christian students suggest that spiritual formation remains a challenge. Some students participate actively in church activities but still struggle with issues such as dishonesty, immorality, lack of forgiveness, poor devotional life, and weak faith commitment. This situation calls for renewed attention to biblical teaching methods and spiritual practices capable of fostering authentic spiritual growth.

The Lord’s Prayer provides a comprehensive model for spiritual formation because it addresses both vertical and horizontal dimensions of Christian living. It teaches reverence for God, dependence on divine provision, reconciliation with others, and resistance against temptation. Through consistent meditation and practice, Christian students can develop stronger spiritual discipline, humility, obedience, and Christ-centered values. The prayer also encourages communal spirituality through the repeated use of collective expressions such as “Our Father,” “Give us,” and “Forgive us,” thereby promoting unity and fellowship among believers.

Furthermore, Christian education scholars argue that spiritual formation is most effective when biblical teachings are integrated into daily life practices. Pazmiño (2008) maintains that Christian education must aim at transforming learners spiritually, morally, intellectually, and socially through biblical instruction and spiritual disciplines. In this regard, the Lord’s Prayer can serve as an important educational tool for teaching Christian students about faith, worship, forgiveness, stewardship, dependence on God, and spiritual perseverance.

Despite the recognized importance of prayer in Christianity, there appears to be limited empirical research focusing specifically on the role of the Lord’s Prayer in enhancing spiritual formation among Christian students in Nigerian churches. Most existing studies emphasize general prayer practices, church attendance, or youth spirituality without examining how the teachings and application of the Lord’s Prayer influence spiritual development among students. This gap necessitates further investigation into how selected churches in Lagos State use the Lord’s Prayer as a means of spiritual formation among Christian students.

It is against this background that this study seeks to examine the role of the Lord’s Prayer in enhancing spiritual formation among Christian students in selected churches in Lagos State, Nigeria.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Spiritual formation remains one of the major objectives of Christian education because it focuses on nurturing believers toward spiritual maturity, moral uprightness, and Christ-like living. Churches and Christian educators are expected to guide students in developing strong spiritual disciplines such as prayer, Bible study, worship, and obedience to God’s word. Among these disciplines, prayer occupies a strategic position because it strengthens personal relationship with God and shapes the spiritual character of believers. Despite the emphasis placed on prayer within churches, many Christian students continue to experience spiritual weaknesses that affect their Christian growth and commitment.

In recent years, many churches in Lagos State have observed increasing cases of moral compromise, inconsistency in prayer life, declining interest in Bible study, weak commitment to church activities, and susceptibility to worldly influences among Christian students. Although these students participate in church programmes and recite biblical prayers such as the Lord’s Prayer, evidence suggests that many lack deep understanding of the spiritual principles embedded in the prayer. For some students, the Lord’s Prayer has become a routine religious recitation rather than a practical guide for daily Christian living and spiritual transformation.

Furthermore, the modern social environment exposes Christian students to numerous distractions and moral pressures that hinder spiritual growth. The influence of secular culture, social media addiction, materialism, peer pressure, and academic stress has weakened the spiritual lives of many young believers. As a result, many Christian students struggle with forgiveness, humility, obedience, trust in God, and resistance to temptation despite regular participation in church worship and prayer activities. This situation raises concern about whether churches are effectively using biblical teachings such as the Lord’s Prayer to promote meaningful spiritual formation among students.

Another problem is the apparent lack of intentional teaching on the deeper meaning and practical application of the Lord’s Prayer within some churches. In many cases, the prayer is recited during worship services without adequate explanation of its theological significance and spiritual implications. Consequently, students may memorize the prayer without internalizing its lessons on worship, dependence on God, forgiveness, and holy living. This weakens the transformative potential of the prayer in shaping students’ spiritual attitudes and behaviors.

Additionally, there is limited empirical literature in Nigeria specifically examining the relationship between the Lord’s Prayer and spiritual formation among Christian students. Most available studies focus broadly on prayer, youth spirituality, or religious participation without paying close attention to how the Lord’s Prayer contributes to spiritual development in church contexts. This lack of adequate research creates a knowledge gap that requires scholarly attention.

Therefore, the problem of this study is to investigate the extent to which the Lord’s Prayer enhances spiritual formation among Christian students in selected churches in Lagos State, Nigeria.

1.3 Purpose of the Study

The main purpose of this study is to examine the role of the Lord’s Prayer in enhancing spiritual formation among Christian students in selected churches in Lagos State, Nigeria.

The specific objectives are to:

1. examine the understanding of the Lord’s Prayer among Christian students in selected churches in Lagos State;
2. determine the influence of the Lord’s Prayer on the prayer life of Christian students;
3. assess the role of the Lord’s Prayer in promoting moral and spiritual discipline among Christian students;
4. investigate the challenges affecting the practical application of the Lord’s Prayer among Christian students.

1.4 Research Questions

The following research questions will guide the study:

1. What is the level of understanding of the Lord’s Prayer among Christian students in selected churches in Lagos State?
2. How does the Lord’s Prayer influence the prayer life of Christian students?
3. What role does the Lord’s Prayer play in promoting moral and spiritual discipline among Christian students?
4. What challenges affect the practical application of the Lord’s Prayer among Christian students?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

The following null hypothesis will be tested in the study:

H₀: The Lord’s Prayer has no significant influence on the spiritual formation of Christian students in selected churches in Lagos State, Nigeria.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study will be significant to Christian educators, church leaders, pastors, youth coordinators, theological institutions, Christian students, and future researchers.

The study will help Christian educators understand how the teachings and application of the Lord’s Prayer can be used to promote spiritual growth and character development among students. It will also provide insights into effective methods of teaching prayer within Christian education programmes.

Church leaders and pastors will benefit from the findings by gaining better understanding of the importance of intentional prayer instruction in discipleship and youth ministry. The study may encourage churches to place greater emphasis on explaining the meaning and practical application of the Lord’s Prayer during worship services, Bible studies, and youth programmes.

The study will also benefit Christian students by helping them appreciate the spiritual depth of the Lord’s Prayer and encouraging them to apply its principles in daily Christian living. This may contribute to stronger spiritual discipline, improved moral conduct, and deeper relationship with God.

Furthermore, theological institutions and seminaries may use the findings as relevant academic material for courses in Christian education, practical theology, and spiritual formation. The study will equally contribute to existing literature on prayer and spiritual development within the Nigerian church context.

Finally, the study will serve as a reference source for future researchers who may wish to conduct further studies on prayer, Christian discipleship, youth spirituality, and spiritual formation.

1.7 Scope of the Study

This study focuses on the role of the Lord’s Prayer in enhancing spiritual formation among Christian students in three selected churches in Lagos State, Nigeria. The study will specifically examine students’ understanding of the Lord’s Prayer, its influence on their prayer life, its contribution to moral and spiritual discipline, and the challenges affecting its practical application.

The study will be limited to three selected churches in Lagos State and Christian students who actively participate in church activities – RCCG, MFM and Winners)

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

Lord’s Prayer: A model prayer taught by Jesus Christ to His disciples as recorded in Matthew 6:9–13 and Luke 11:2–4.

Spiritual Formation: The process of spiritual growth and transformation through which believers develop Christ-like character and deepen their relationship with God.

Christian Students: Young believers who are actively involved in educational pursuits and participate in church activities and Christian programmes.

Christian Education: A process of teaching and learning based on biblical principles aimed at spiritual growth, moral development, and Christian discipleship.

Church: A Christian religious organization or assembly where believers gather for worship, teaching, fellowship, and spiritual development.
