Project – The Role of Prayer in Church Growth and Spiritual Development: A Case Study of Selected Pentecostal Churches in Lagos State.
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
Prayer occupies a central position in Christian worship, discipleship, ministry, and the life of the Church. Within the Christian tradition, prayer is understood as a means through which believers communicate with God, express dependence on divine guidance, seek spiritual strength, confess their sins, and intercede for others. The biblical account of the early Church presents prayer as an important practice that accompanied fellowship, teaching, worship, and evangelism. Acts 2:42 describes the early believers as devoting themselves to the apostles’ teaching, fellowship, breaking of bread, and prayers. This biblical pattern suggests that prayer was not an isolated religious activity but an integral part of the community’s spiritual identity and collective life. Murray (1981), in his classic work on Christian prayer, similarly emphasised the importance of prayer in nurturing faith and sustaining a believer’s relationship with Christ. Therefore, understanding the role of prayer in church growth and spiritual development requires examining both its place in Christian teaching and its practical expression in the life of the contemporary Church.
Church growth is a multidimensional concept that encompasses numerical increase, spiritual maturity, effective discipleship, active participation, evangelistic outreach, and the development of a committed Christian community. Although numerical growth is often used to assess the expansion of a congregation, it does not necessarily provide a complete picture of the Church’s spiritual health. Wagner (1981) discussed church growth in relation to the Church’s biblical mandate and evangelistic responsibilities, highlighting the need to understand growth within the broader mission of Christianity. Similarly, the account of the early Church in Acts 6:7 connects the spread of the word of God with an increase in the number of disciples, suggesting a relationship between spiritual ministry and numerical expansion. Prayer may contribute to these dimensions by encouraging believers to seek divine direction, intercede for prospective converts, support evangelistic activities, and maintain unity within the congregation. However, the extent to which prayer contributes to church growth should be assessed alongside other factors, including leadership, preaching, discipleship, community engagement, and organisational effectiveness.
The relationship between prayer and spiritual development is equally significant because the purpose of Christian ministry extends beyond attracting new members to nurturing believers in their faith. Spiritual development may be understood in terms of increasing knowledge of Christian teachings, strengthening personal devotion, developing moral character, cultivating love for others, and demonstrating the fruits of the Spirit. In Galatians 5:22–23, the apostle Paul identifies love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control as characteristics of a Spirit-shaped life. These qualities provide a biblical basis for assessing spiritual maturity beyond outward religious participation. Murray (1981) presents prayer as an important aspect of the believer’s continuing relationship with Christ, while Foster (1978), in his discussion of spiritual disciplines, explains the importance of intentional spiritual practices in Christian formation. From this perspective, prayer can be examined as a discipline through which believers seek spiritual renewal, reflect on their conduct, develop dependence on God, and strengthen their commitment to Christian living.
Pentecostal Christianity places particular emphasis on prayer as a means of spiritual empowerment, divine encounter, healing, deliverance, evangelism, and the operation of the Holy Spirit. Pentecostal worship commonly incorporates personal devotion, corporate prayer, intercession, fasting, testimonies, and other expressions of spiritual commitment. Anderson (2004), in his study of global Pentecostalism, explains the significance of the experiential dimension of Pentecostal faith, including the emphasis on the Holy Spirit and the practical expression of religious experience. In the Nigerian context, Ojo (2006) examines the development of Pentecostal movements and their influence on Christian identity, religious commitment, and public life. These perspectives provide a basis for investigating how prayer functions within Pentecostal congregations, particularly in relation to worship participation, spiritual renewal, evangelistic commitment, and the development of a strong sense of Christian community. Nevertheless, the importance attached to prayer within Pentecostal theology does not automatically establish its measurable contribution to every aspect of church growth; this relationship requires careful investigation.
Furthermore, corporate prayer can serve as a means of strengthening fellowship, unity, and shared responsibility among church members. When congregations gather to pray, members may develop a stronger sense of belonging, mutual encouragement, compassion, and commitment to the activities of the Church. The biblical account in Acts 4:23–31 illustrates how early Christians gathered in prayer when confronted with opposition and sought boldness to continue their witness. This example presents prayer as a collective practice that may strengthen the confidence and unity of a Christian community. Foster (1978) also discusses spiritual disciplines as practices that can shape Christian character and encourage a deeper relationship with God. In Pentecostal churches, organised prayer meetings, intercessory groups, early-morning prayers, and special prayer programmes may provide opportunities for members to participate in congregational life and support one another spiritually. Examining these practices is important because church growth depends not only on attracting new members but also on sustaining fellowship, encouraging participation, and helping existing members develop a lasting commitment to the congregation.
Prayer may also be associated with evangelism and the expansion of the Church’s outreach activities. The Christian mission involves proclaiming the gospel, making disciples, and serving communities, as reflected in Matthew 28:19–20. Prayer can accompany these activities by helping believers seek guidance, develop courage, intercede for people they hope to reach, and reflect on the needs of their communities. Wagner (1981) discusses church growth in relation to evangelistic responsibility and the Church’s mission, providing a framework for considering how spiritual practices relate to organised outreach. Similarly, Anderson (2004) explains the importance of spiritual experience and active religious participation in Pentecostal Christianity. In selected Pentecostal churches in Lagos State, prayer may be integrated into evangelistic campaigns, house-to-house outreach, missionary activities, community programmes, and follow-up efforts for new converts. It is therefore necessary to investigate whether congregations that maintain regular and organised prayer activities also report stronger participation in evangelism, more effective integration of new members, and sustained congregational development.
The Nigerian Pentecostal movement provides a relevant setting for examining these relationships because of its emphasis on spiritual experience, intensive worship, religious participation, and evangelistic activity. Ojo (2006) documents the historical development and influence of Nigerian Pentecostal Christianity, while Anderson (2004) situates Pentecostalism within a wider global movement characterised by distinctive expressions of Christian spirituality. Lagos State, as a major urban centre, contains Pentecostal congregations operating within diverse social and economic circumstances. These churches may differ in membership size, leadership structures, financial resources, prayer schedules, discipleship arrangements, and evangelistic strategies. Consequently, the role of prayer may not be identical across congregations. Some churches may organise frequent corporate prayer meetings, while others may emphasise individual devotion, specialised intercessory ministries, or prayer as part of regular worship services. A comparative investigation of selected Pentecostal churches in Lagos State can therefore help clarify the ways prayer is practised, how members perceive its contribution to spiritual development, and whether differences in prayer participation are associated with differences in church growth.
Despite the prominent place of prayer in Pentecostal Christianity, it is important to distinguish between theological conviction, personal testimony, and systematically examined evidence. A congregation may attribute numerical increase, spiritual renewal, or successful evangelism to prayer, but these outcomes may also be influenced by preaching, leadership quality, discipleship programmes, effective administration, social relationships, and community involvement. Wagner (1981) places church growth within a broader understanding of Christian mission, while Foster (1978) emphasises the formative significance of spiritual disciplines in the Christian life. Together, these perspectives support an investigation that considers prayer as an important religious practice without assuming that it independently explains every observed outcome. In particular, the study needs to examine the frequency and forms of prayer, members’ participation in prayer activities, perceived spiritual benefits, and the relationship between prayer and indicators of congregational growth. Such an approach can provide a more balanced understanding of prayer’s role in the life and development of Pentecostal churches.
Against this background, this study examines the role of prayer in church growth and spiritual development, using selected Pentecostal churches in Lagos State as a case study. It focuses on the forms of prayer practised in the selected churches, the relationship between prayer and church growth, the contribution of prayer to members’ spiritual development, and the challenges that may affect effective participation in prayer activities. The study is guided by the biblical understanding of prayer, the emphasis on spiritual formation discussed by Foster (1978) and Murray (1981), and the broader perspectives on church growth and Pentecostal Christianity provided by Wagner (1981), Ojo (2006), and Anderson (2004). By examining these dimensions together, the research seeks to develop a clearer understanding of how prayer operates within congregational life and how its contribution to numerical growth and spiritual maturity may be evaluated in the context of selected Pentecostal churches in Lagos State.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Prayer is widely recognised as a fundamental practice in Pentecostal Christianity and is frequently incorporated into worship services, intercessory meetings, fasting programmes, evangelistic campaigns, and personal devotional life. Pentecostal churches often attach considerable spiritual importance to prayer as a means of seeking divine guidance, promoting spiritual renewal, and supporting the Church’s mission. However, the prominence of prayer in church activities does not, by itself, establish the extent to which it contributes to numerical growth or the spiritual development of members. Wagner (1981) identifies church growth as an important concern of Christian mission, while Murray (1981) emphasises prayer in the development of faith and the believer’s relationship with Christ. The problem, therefore, is not simply whether Pentecostal churches pray, but whether and how their prayer practices are associated with identifiable dimensions of church growth and spiritual development.
A further problem concerns the relationship between participation in prayer and the quality of members’ spiritual lives. Attendance at prayer meetings may indicate religious involvement, but it does not necessarily demonstrate that members are becoming more knowledgeable about Christian teachings, developing Christlike character, engaging in discipleship, or applying Christian values in everyday life. Foster (1978) explains the role of spiritual disciplines in Christian formation, while Galatians 5:22–23 provides a biblical basis for considering spiritual maturity in terms of character and conduct. Within Pentecostal congregations, prayer programmes may be extensive, yet the extent to which members perceive improvements in their devotional consistency, Christian conduct, knowledge of Scripture, and commitment to service requires investigation. Without examining these dimensions, it may be difficult to determine whether prayer participation is accompanied by meaningful spiritual development or is understood mainly in terms of attendance at religious activities.
Another issue is that church growth is influenced by several interacting factors, making it difficult to attribute congregational expansion exclusively to prayer. Leadership effectiveness, the quality of preaching, evangelistic methods, members’ commitment, discipleship structures, financial resources, and community relationships may all contribute to a church’s development. Anderson (2004) discusses the experiential and organisational diversity of Pentecostal Christianity, while Ojo (2006) highlights the development and influence of Pentecostal movements in Nigeria. These perspectives suggest the importance of examining prayer within the wider circumstances of individual congregations rather than treating it as an isolated explanation for growth. In selected Pentecostal churches in Lagos State, it is therefore necessary to establish how prayer is organised, how members participate, and how the perceived contribution of prayer relates to numerical expansion, member retention, evangelistic engagement, and spiritual maturity.
The central problem addressed by this study is the need for a clearer understanding of the role of prayer in church growth and spiritual development within selected Pentecostal churches in Lagos State. Although prayer occupies a prominent place in Pentecostal worship and ministry, the extent of its contribution to congregational growth, the spiritual development of members, and the effectiveness of church activities may differ across churches and requires systematic examination. Murray (1981) provides a theological account of prayer and spiritual life, while Wagner (1981) discusses the Church’s growth and evangelistic responsibilities; however, these general perspectives do not, on their own, establish the experiences and outcomes of the particular congregations selected for this investigation. The study therefore seeks to examine the relationship between prayer practices, church growth, and spiritual development, while also identifying challenges that may limit effective participation in prayer activities. The findings are expected to provide context-specific evidence that can assist church leaders in evaluating prayer programmes and strengthening both congregational development and members’ spiritual lives.

1.5 Research Hypothesis
The following null hypothesis will be tested at the 0.05 level of significance.
H₀: There is no statistically significant relationship between prayer and church growth in selected Pentecostal churches in Lagos State.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will be significant to church leaders, pastors, church members, theological institutions, Christian ministry practitioners, and future researchers.
Church leaders and pastors: The study will provide insights into how prayer activities relate to church growth and spiritual development. Its findings may assist pastors in evaluating existing prayer programmes, identifying participation challenges, and developing approaches that integrate prayer with evangelism, discipleship, and pastoral care.
Church members: The study may help members understand the importance of prayer in personal devotion, fellowship, spiritual maturity, and participation in the mission of the Church. It may also encourage members to approach prayer as an aspect of continuing Christian growth rather than merely a scheduled religious activity.
Pentecostal churches: The findings may help the selected churches assess their prayer practices and consider how these practices relate to membership participation, retention, evangelistic engagement, and spiritual development. The study may also encourage a balanced approach that combines prayer with effective leadership, biblical teaching, discipleship, and community service.
Theological institutions and Christian ministry practitioners: The study may contribute to discussions about prayer, Pentecostal spirituality, church growth, and spiritual formation. It may also provide material for teaching and ministerial training on the relationship between spiritual disciplines and congregational development.
Future researchers: The study may serve as a reference for further research on prayer and church growth, particularly in Pentecostal congregations in Lagos State and other parts of Nigeria. It may also provide a basis for comparative studies examining differences in prayer practices, spiritual development, and church growth across denominations and geographical locations.
1.7 Scope of the Study
The study will focus on the role of prayer in church growth and spiritual development in selected Pentecostal churches in Lagos State, Nigeria. Its geographical scope will be limited to the particular Pentecostal churches selected for the investigation.
The content scope will cover four major areas: forms and patterns of prayer, the relationship between prayer and church growth, the contribution of prayer to members’ spiritual development, and challenges affecting participation in prayer activities. Church growth will be considered in terms of relevant indicators such as membership increase, member retention, evangelistic participation, and congregational involvement. Spiritual development will be examined through indicators such as personal devotion, biblical understanding, Christian character, fellowship, and commitment to Christian service.
The study will focus on the experiences and perceptions of relevant respondents within the selected churches. The findings will therefore be interpreted within the context of the churches investigated and will not automatically be generalised to every Pentecostal church in Lagos State or Nigeria.
