Project – The Role of Prayer in Spiritual Growth Among Christian Youths: A Study of Selected Churches in Abuja Municipal Area Council, Nigeria
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
Prayer is one of the most fundamental practices in Christianity and has remained central to the spiritual life of believers throughout church history. In Christian theology, prayer is regarded as a means of communication between humans and God through which believers express worship, thanksgiving, confession, supplication, and intercession. It is also considered an important spiritual discipline that strengthens faith, deepens intimacy with God, and promotes spiritual maturity among Christians (Foster, 1992). Among Christian youths, prayer serves as a vital tool for spiritual development, moral guidance, emotional stability, and resistance against worldly temptations.
Spiritual growth refers to the progressive development of a believer in faith, character, knowledge of God, and obedience to biblical principles. It involves becoming more Christ-like through consistent fellowship with God, study of Scripture, prayer, and participation in Christian activities (Willard, 1998). The Bible emphasizes the importance of spiritual growth for all believers, particularly young Christians who are often confronted with social, moral, and spiritual challenges. According to the Scriptures, spiritual growth is nurtured through prayer and dependence on God. Jesus Christ encouraged His disciples to pray continually in order to overcome temptation and remain spiritually alert (Matthew 26:41). Likewise, the Apostle Paul instructed believers to “pray without ceasing” (1 Thessalonians 5:17), highlighting the significance of prayer in Christian living.
Prayer has historically been regarded as a source of spiritual empowerment and transformation in Christianity. In the early church, believers devoted themselves to prayer as an essential part of their spiritual lives and communal worship (Acts 2:42). Through prayer, Christians seek divine guidance, wisdom, protection, strength, and spiritual renewal. Scholars argue that consistent prayer life contributes positively to spiritual discipline, moral behavior, emotional resilience, and commitment to Christian values (Bounds, 2013). Prayer is therefore not merely a religious activity but a spiritual practice that influences the total life of a believer.
In contemporary society, Christian youths face numerous challenges capable of hindering their spiritual growth. These challenges include peer pressure, social media addiction, materialism, sexual immorality, drug abuse, internet fraud, secularism, and declining commitment to Christian values. In Nigeria, many youths struggle to maintain spiritual discipline due to increasing societal influences and economic pressures. As a result, churches and Christian organizations have continued to emphasize prayer as a means of strengthening youths spiritually and helping them remain steadfast in their faith (Adeboye, 2015).
Christian youths occupy a strategic position in the church because they represent both the present and future of Christianity. Their spiritual development is therefore important for the growth and continuity of the church. Many churches in Nigeria organize youth prayer meetings, fasting programs, retreats, vigils, Bible studies, and revival services aimed at promoting spiritual growth among young believers. Through these activities, youths are encouraged to develop personal prayer habits and deeper commitment to God. Scholars have observed that active participation in prayer activities often leads to stronger faith, increased moral consciousness, and greater involvement in church activities among youths (Anderson, 2013).
The theology of prayer within Pentecostal and evangelical Christianity particularly emphasizes the transformative power of prayer in the life of believers. Pentecostal churches teach that prayer enables Christians to experience the presence and power of the Holy Spirit, overcome spiritual battles, and grow in holiness and righteousness (Asamoah-Gyadu, 2014). Consequently, prayer is strongly promoted among youths as a means of spiritual empowerment and protection against negative societal influences. In many Nigerian churches, youths are taught that consistent prayer life enhances spiritual sensitivity, obedience to God, and Christian commitment.
Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), located within the Federal Capital Territory of Nigeria, is home to diverse Christian denominations and active youth fellowships. Churches within the area regularly organize prayer programs and spiritual development activities targeted at youths. Despite these efforts, concerns persist regarding declining spiritual commitment, moral compromise, and worldly lifestyles among some Christian youths. Cases of internet fraud, cultism, substance abuse, and sexual immorality among youths have raised questions about the effectiveness of spiritual formation strategies within the church. This situation has made the study of prayer and spiritual growth among Christian youths particularly relevant within the Nigerian context.
Furthermore, the increasing influence of technology and modern culture has significantly affected the spiritual lives of many young Christians. Social media, entertainment culture, and secular ideologies often compete with spiritual disciplines such as prayer, Bible study, and church participation. Many youths spend more time on digital platforms than in spiritual activities, resulting in weakened prayer life and reduced commitment to Christian values (Willard, 1998). This development has generated concerns among church leaders and theologians regarding the spiritual future of Christian youths in Nigeria.
Although several studies have examined youth development, church growth, and spirituality, limited attention has been given to the specific role of prayer in promoting spiritual growth among Christian youths in Abuja Municipal Area Council. Most existing studies focus broadly on youth behavior, moral decline, or Pentecostal practices without adequately investigating how prayer contributes to spiritual maturity among young believers. Therefore, this study seeks to examine the role of prayer in spiritual growth among Christian youths using selected churches in Abuja Municipal Area Council, Nigeria, as a case study.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Prayer is widely recognized in Christianity as an essential spiritual discipline necessary for the growth and development of believers. Churches consistently encourage members, especially youths, to cultivate active prayer lives in order to strengthen their faith and relationship with God. Despite this emphasis, many Christian youths today appear to experience declining spiritual commitment and increasing involvement in behaviors contrary to Christian teachings. Issues such as sexual immorality, internet fraud, drug abuse, materialism, peer pressure, and poor church participation among youths have become major concerns within Nigerian society (Adeboye, 2015).
In Abuja Municipal Area Council, churches organize numerous spiritual activities including prayer meetings, fasting programs, retreats, youth revivals, and vigils aimed at promoting spiritual growth among young people. However, despite these efforts, many youths still struggle with spiritual instability, inconsistent prayer life, and moral compromise. This situation raises concerns regarding the extent to which prayer actually contributes to spiritual growth among Christian youths.
Another problem is that many Christian youths participate in prayer activities without fully understanding the theological significance and spiritual purpose of prayer. For some youths, prayer has become a routine religious exercise rather than a means of building intimacy with God and developing spiritual maturity. This shallow understanding of prayer may limit its effectiveness in transforming character and strengthening Christian commitment (Foster, 1992).
Additionally, the influence of secularism, social media, modern entertainment, and economic pressures has negatively affected the spiritual lives of many youths. Many young Christians devote more time to digital entertainment and social activities than to prayer and spiritual disciplines. As a result, churches are increasingly concerned about declining spirituality and weak moral values among youths (Willard, 1998).
Furthermore, while many studies have examined youth development and church activities in Nigeria, there is limited empirical research specifically focusing on the relationship between prayer and spiritual growth among Christian youths in Abuja Municipal Area Council. Existing studies have not sufficiently explored how prayer influences the spiritual lives, moral behavior, and Christian commitment of youths within selected churches in the area.
It is against this background that this study seeks to investigate the role of prayer in spiritual growth among Christian youths in selected churches in Abuja Municipal Area Council, Nigeria.
