Project – The Role of School Social Environment in Shaping Students’ Academic Motivation and Educational Aspirations in Selected Secondary Schools in Ofu LGA

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

Education is widely regarded as an essential instrument for individual development, social integration, economic advancement and national transformation. Through education, individuals acquire knowledge, skills, values, attitudes and competencies that enable them to participate meaningfully in society. Secondary education is particularly important because it represents a critical stage between basic education and higher education, vocational training or entry into the world of work. At this level, students are expected to develop not only academic competencies but also the attitudes, aspirations, social skills and motivation required for lifelong learning.

The effectiveness of education, however, depends on more than the availability of curriculum and teachers. The environment in which students learn is an important component of the educational process. Students spend a substantial proportion of their formative years within schools, interacting with teachers, classmates, school administrators and other members of the school community. These interactions can shape how students perceive themselves, their schools and their educational futures. Consequently, the school should not be viewed merely as a physical location where teaching takes place but as a social environment in which students develop academically, emotionally and socially.

The concept of the school social environment refers to the patterns of relationships, interactions, norms, values, expectations and social experiences that characterize life within a school. It encompasses relationships between teachers and students, relationships among students, teacher support, peer relationships, fairness, respect, participation, school rules, sense of belonging, communication and the general social climate of the school. A positive school social environment is one in which students feel respected, supported, safe and valued, while a negative environment may be characterized by conflict, bullying, discrimination, poor teacher-student relationships, excessive authoritarianism or lack of social support.

The school social environment is closely related to the broader concept of school climate. School climate has been described as the quality and character of school life, including students’ perceptions of safety, relationships, teaching and learning, and the institutional environment. Research has increasingly recognized that school climate can influence students’ engagement, behaviour and educational outcomes. In a recent study, Nwisagbo, Nwovuhoma and Onafowope (2025) described school climate as encompassing the physical, social and emotional environment of schools and examined its relationship with students’ learning outcomes in Nigerian public secondary schools.

The social dimension of the school environment is particularly important because students are social beings. Their motivation to learn can be influenced by how teachers treat them, whether they feel accepted by their classmates and whether they perceive the school as a place where their efforts are recognized. A student who experiences encouragement from teachers and positive relationships with peers may be more willing to participate in classroom activities, complete assignments and persist when academic tasks become difficult. Conversely, a student who experiences rejection, humiliation, bullying or persistent conflict may develop negative attitudes toward school and learning.

Academic motivation refers to the internal and external forces that initiate, direct and sustain students’ engagement in academic activities. It influences the extent to which students are willing to attend classes, participate in learning, complete assignments, study for examinations and persist in the face of academic difficulties. Academic motivation may be intrinsic, where students engage in learning because they find it interesting or satisfying, or extrinsic, where engagement is influenced by rewards, recognition, grades, parental expectations or future career opportunities.

Self-Determination Theory provides an important theoretical explanation of the relationship between social environment and academic motivation. Deci and Ryan (2000) argue that human motivation is strongly influenced by the satisfaction of three basic psychological needs: autonomy, competence and relatedness. In educational settings, students are more likely to become intrinsically motivated when they experience a sense of competence, some degree of autonomy and meaningful relationships with others. A school environment characterized by supportive teachers and positive relationships can therefore create conditions that encourage students to become more motivated learners.

The teacher-student relationship is one of the most important aspects of the school social environment. Teachers are not only providers of academic knowledge; they also serve as role models, mentors, sources of feedback and significant adults in students’ lives. When teachers communicate respectfully, provide constructive feedback, show concern for students’ welfare and maintain fair classroom practices, students may develop stronger confidence and motivation. Conversely, harsh treatment, favouritism, lack of encouragement or poor communication may reduce students’ enthusiasm for learning.

Research has demonstrated the relevance of school-related factors to student motivation in Nigeria. Owoyemi (2025), for example, examined teacher support, classroom rules and instructional resource availability as school-related factors associated with junior secondary school students’ motivation towards learning in Ogun State. The study emphasizes the importance of school-related conditions in understanding students’ academic motivation.

Peer relationships constitute another major component of the school social environment. Adolescence is a period during which relationships with peers become increasingly significant. Students may seek acceptance from classmates and may be influenced by their peers’ attitudes toward school, learning and academic achievement. Positive peer relationships can provide emotional support, encouragement, cooperation and opportunities for collaborative learning. Negative peer relationships, on the other hand, may expose students to distraction, bullying, social exclusion or negative attitudes toward academic work.

The influence of peers may be especially important for academic motivation because students often compare themselves with their classmates. A school culture in which academic effort is valued may encourage students to work harder, while an environment where academic achievement is mocked or regarded as undesirable may discourage students from demonstrating academic commitment. Research has also suggested that peer networks can contribute to changes in students’ educational aspirations, indicating that aspirations are not entirely fixed but can be influenced by students’ social environments.

Social support is another important component of the school environment. Students require emotional and academic support to cope with the demands of secondary education. Support may come from teachers, classmates, school counsellors, administrators and other members of the school community. A supportive school can provide students with encouragement when they experience academic difficulties and help them develop confidence in their ability to succeed.

Recent research conducted among secondary school learners in Epe, Lagos State, examined peer relationships, social support and school climate as factors associated with educational outcomes. Odeyemi and Afonja (2026) emphasize that peer relationships, social support and school climate are important psychosocial and environmental factors in students’ educational experiences. Although Epe is different from Ofu Local Government Area, the findings demonstrate the continuing relevance of the school social environment to educational outcomes in Nigeria.

A positive social environment may also promote students’ sense of belonging. School belonging refers to the extent to which students feel accepted, respected, included and supported within their school community. When students feel that they are valued members of the school, they may be more likely to attend regularly, participate in school activities and identify with the goals and values of the institution. A weak sense of belonging may have the opposite effect and may contribute to disengagement from academic activities.

Academic motivation is also connected to students’ educational aspirations. Educational aspirations refer to the educational goals or levels of education that students hope or intend to attain in the future. A student may aspire to complete secondary education and attend a university, college, polytechnic or other institution of higher learning. Another student may aspire to obtain vocational training or enter employment after secondary school. Educational aspirations therefore represent an important aspect of students’ perceptions of their future.

Educational aspirations are important because they can influence students’ present academic behaviour. Students who have clear and ambitious educational goals may be more willing to invest effort in their studies because they perceive current academic activities as connected to future objectives. In contrast, students who have limited educational aspirations may see little value in sustained academic effort. Salami (2008), in a study of 430 secondary school adolescents in southwestern Nigeria, examined the roles of personality, vocational interests, academic achievement and sociocultural factors in educational aspirations. The study demonstrates the importance of educational aspirations as an area of investigation among Nigerian secondary school students.

The relationship between school social environment and educational aspirations can be understood through students’ exposure to expectations, role models and opportunities. Teachers who communicate high but realistic expectations may encourage students to consider higher levels of education. School counsellors can provide information about careers and educational pathways. Peers may also influence aspirations by sharing information about universities, careers and opportunities. In this way, the school social environment can shape students’ perceptions of what is possible and desirable.

Research outside Nigeria has provided evidence that school climate can be related to academic aspirations. Almroth et al. (2021), for example, examined pedagogic and social climate in relation to adolescents’ academic aspirations and found evidence that school climate can play a role in the formation of adolescents’ educational aspirations. This supports the argument that students’ future educational goals are influenced not only by family and individual characteristics but also by the environments in which they are educated.

The social environment of the school can also affect students’ self-concept and self-efficacy. Academic self-concept refers to students’ perceptions of their abilities in relation to academic tasks, while self-efficacy concerns their beliefs about their capacity to successfully perform specific activities. Students who receive positive feedback and encouragement may develop stronger beliefs in their academic abilities. Stronger academic self-beliefs can, in turn, encourage persistence and motivation.

Akomolafe, Ogunmakin and Fasooto (2013) examined academic self-efficacy, academic motivation and academic self-concept as predictors of secondary school students’ academic performance in Nigeria. Their study demonstrates the importance of motivational and self-belief variables in understanding secondary school students’ academic experiences.

The school social environment can also influence discipline and classroom behaviour. Schools establish rules and expectations to guide students’ conduct. When rules are clearly communicated and consistently applied in a fair manner, students may perceive the school as organized and predictable. However, when disciplinary practices are perceived as arbitrary or unfair, students may develop negative attitudes toward school authorities. Fairness is therefore an important part of a positive school social environment.

Bullying and social exclusion represent additional challenges. Students who are repeatedly bullied or excluded may experience fear, anxiety, reduced participation and negative attitudes toward school. The presence of bullying may undermine the sense of safety and belonging required for effective learning. A school environment that actively promotes respect, inclusion and positive peer relationships can therefore contribute to better student engagement.

School leadership is also relevant to the social environment. School administrators influence the organizational culture through their approach to discipline, teacher support, communication and student participation. A school leader who promotes fairness, collaboration and respect may contribute to a healthier social climate. Conversely, ineffective leadership can contribute to conflict and weak relationships among teachers, students and other stakeholders.

The physical and social environments of schools are interconnected. Although the present study focuses primarily on the social environment, physical conditions may influence social experiences. Overcrowded classrooms, inadequate facilities and insufficient learning materials may increase stress and limit opportunities for positive teacher-student interaction. Conversely, well-organized school facilities can support effective interaction and learning. A comprehensive understanding of school environment therefore requires attention to both physical and social conditions, even though the social dimension is the primary concern of this study.

The Nigerian educational context makes this issue particularly important. Students in secondary schools are expected to acquire knowledge and skills that will prepare them for higher education, employment and responsible citizenship. However, recent Nigerian research continues to identify challenges related to student motivation, school climate and educational outcomes. Adepoju and Pitan (2025), for example, examined academic motivation among 1,187 senior secondary school students in Southwest Nigeria and emphasized the importance of motivation for learning and achievement.

The relevance of the issue is further strengthened by evidence that students’ perceptions of school environment can be associated with academic outcomes. Babcock and Kolawole (2023) examined school environment, self-esteem and academic performance among secondary school students in Ogun State, Nigeria, highlighting the importance of school environment in understanding students’ educational experiences.

Ofu Local Government Area of Kogi State provides a specific geographical context in which these issues can be examined. Students in selected secondary schools in Ofu interact daily with teachers, peers, school administrators and other members of their school communities. These interactions create a social environment that may either encourage or discourage academic motivation and educational aspirations. However, the nature and influence of this environment may vary from one school to another.

There may be differences in teacher-student relationships, peer relationships, disciplinary practices, school leadership, student participation and social support across schools. Some schools may create environments in which students feel valued, supported and encouraged to pursue higher educational goals, while others may experience social challenges that discourage academic engagement. Understanding these differences is important because interventions to improve students’ educational outcomes should not focus exclusively on curriculum and physical facilities.

Another important issue is that students’ academic motivation and educational aspirations are not necessarily determined by individual ability alone. Two students with similar academic abilities may develop different levels of motivation and aspirations depending on the support, encouragement and expectations they experience. The school environment can therefore serve as either a facilitator or a barrier to students’ academic development.

The importance of examining the issue at the local government level also arises from the fact that educational experiences can vary substantially across geographical settings. Findings from studies conducted in Lagos, Ogun, Enugu or other areas cannot automatically be generalized to Ofu LGA. Local school conditions, community characteristics, teacher-student relationships, peer culture and available educational opportunities may differ. A localized investigation is therefore necessary to generate evidence relevant to schools and students in Ofu.

The study is consequently based on the assumption that a school is not simply a place for academic instruction but also a social institution that shapes students’ attitudes, behaviour, motivation and expectations. When students experience supportive teacher relationships, positive peer interaction, fair treatment, effective communication, a sense of belonging and encouragement to pursue educational goals, they may be more motivated academically and more likely to develop positive educational aspirations.

Conversely, a negative school social environment may reduce students’ interest in academic activities and weaken their expectations about further education. Persistent conflict, bullying, poor teacher-student relationships, lack of encouragement and perceived unfairness may discourage students from investing effort in school. These possibilities make it important to examine the relationship empirically rather than simply assuming that school environment influences all students in the same way.

It is against this background that the present study investigates the role of school social environment in shaping students’ academic motivation and educational aspirations in selected secondary schools in Ofu Local Government Area of Kogi State.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The primary purpose of secondary education is not only to transmit knowledge but also to develop students who are motivated to learn, capable of setting educational goals and prepared to pursue further education or meaningful careers. However, a major concern in secondary education is that some students demonstrate declining interest in academic activities, weak educational goals and limited commitment to schooling.

Academic motivation is essential because students need sustained interest and willingness to participate in learning activities. A student may possess adequate intellectual ability but fail to perform effectively if the student lacks motivation to attend classes, study, complete assignments or persist in difficult academic tasks. Recent research among senior secondary students in Southwest Nigeria has continued to identify academic motivation as an important factor in students’ learning and achievement (Adepoju & Pitan, 2025).

A related concern is that some secondary school students may have limited educational aspirations. Rather than viewing secondary school as a pathway to higher education and professional development, some students may have weak expectations about continuing their education. Limited aspirations can reduce the value students attach to academic effort and may contribute to poor engagement with school activities.

One possible explanation for these problems is the social environment in which students learn. Students spend several years within school communities where they interact continuously with teachers and peers. If these relationships are positive, students may feel supported and encouraged. If they are negative, students may become discouraged, socially isolated or disengaged from school.

Teacher-student relationships represent a particular concern. Teachers’ attitudes, expectations, communication styles and responses to students can affect students’ perceptions of themselves as learners. When students perceive teachers as supportive and fair, they may be more willing to ask questions, participate in lessons and seek academic assistance. However, where students experience humiliation, favouritism, excessive punishment or lack of attention, their motivation may be negatively affected.

Peer relationships also constitute a significant problem. During adolescence, students are strongly influenced by their peers. Positive peer groups can encourage academic effort, cooperation and educational ambition, while negative peer pressure can encourage truancy, indiscipline, examination malpractice or lack of interest in academic work. The social environment created by peer groups may therefore affect both present academic motivation and future educational aspirations.

Another concern is the level of social support available to students within schools. Students who experience academic difficulties need encouragement and assistance from teachers, counsellors and peers. Where such support is weak, students may interpret academic challenges as evidence that they are incapable of succeeding. This can reduce motivation and lead to lower educational expectations.

School rules and disciplinary practices can also create problems. Discipline is necessary for effective school functioning, but overly punitive or inconsistent disciplinary practices may generate resentment and reduce students’ sense of belonging. On the other hand, clear and fairly implemented rules can promote order and provide a supportive environment for learning.

Bullying, social exclusion and interpersonal conflict may further undermine the school environment. Students who do not feel socially safe may find it difficult to concentrate on academic tasks. Fear of ridicule or rejection can prevent students from participating actively in class and may negatively affect their confidence and motivation.

The problem is not limited to academic motivation. The school environment may also influence students’ educational aspirations. Students develop ideas about their future through interaction with teachers, peers and other significant individuals. Teachers who communicate high expectations and provide information about educational opportunities may encourage students to aspire to higher education. Conversely, students who experience low expectations or limited encouragement may develop restricted educational goals. Research on adolescents has shown that school climate can be associated with academic aspirations (Almroth et al., 2021).

Although research has examined school environment and educational outcomes in Nigeria, much of the available evidence comes from other states and geographical contexts. For example, studies have been conducted in Ogun State, Lagos State, Enugu State and other parts of Nigeria. While these studies are valuable, their findings cannot automatically be generalized to students in Ofu Local Government Area because schools operate within different social, cultural and institutional contexts.

There is therefore a localized empirical gap concerning how the social environment of selected secondary schools in Ofu LGA relates specifically to both academic motivation and educational aspirations. Some studies emphasize academic performance, while others focus on motivation or school climate. Fewer studies consider academic motivation and educational aspirations together as outcomes of the school social environment within this specific locality.

The problem is further complicated by the fact that school social environment is multidimensional. It is not sufficient to ask whether a school has classrooms or instructional materials. It is also necessary to examine whether students experience supportive teacher relationships, positive peer interaction, fair treatment, effective communication, social belonging and encouragement to pursue educational goals.

If these social dimensions are neglected, efforts to improve students’ academic outcomes may focus excessively on curriculum and physical infrastructure while overlooking the relationships and social experiences that influence students’ willingness to learn. Understanding the role of the social environment can therefore help schools develop more comprehensive interventions.

The central problem of this study, therefore, is that despite the importance of academic motivation and educational aspirations to students’ educational development, there is insufficient localized evidence on how the social environment of secondary schools in Ofu LGA shapes these outcomes. This creates the need for an empirical study examining the role of teacher-student relationships, peer relationships, social support, school belonging, fairness and other social environmental factors in shaping students’ academic motivation and educational aspirations.

It is against this background that this study investigates the role of school social environment in shaping students’ academic motivation and educational aspirations in selected secondary schools in Ofu Local Government Area of Kogi State.
