INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
Education is a critical driver of social and economic development in every nation, and technology has become one of the most transformative forces shaping modern educational systems worldwide. The 21st-century learning environment demands that schools integrate technology into teaching and learning to enhance students’ understanding, engagement, and performance (Adeyemi & Bello, 2021). The school technological environment refers to the availability, accessibility, and effective utilization of technological resources such as computers, projectors, internet connectivity, interactive whiteboards, and educational software within the school setting (Ogunleye & Adebayo, 2020).
In Nigeria, the introduction of the National Policy on Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in Education (2019) emphasizes that technology should be an integral part of the teaching and learning process. The goal is to improve instructional delivery, promote creativity, and enhance students’ academic outcomes (Federal Ministry of Education, 2019). However, the implementation of this policy varies across schools, especially between urban and rural areas. In Osogbo, the capital of Osun State, public secondary schools differ significantly in their technological capacity—some are well-equipped with computers and ICT laboratories, while others lack basic technological tools (Olatunji & Akinwale, 2022).
Technology, when effectively utilized, serves as a catalyst for improved academic performance. It enables teachers to adopt modern pedagogical strategies such as blended learning, digital simulations, and online assessments that make learning more interactive and student-centered (Eze & Okorie, 2020). According to Adetunji and Ibrahim (2021), exposure to a technologically rich school environment enhances students’ motivation, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities, which in turn improve their academic performance. However, when the technological environment is poor—characterized by obsolete equipment, inadequate training, or lack of internet access—teaching becomes less engaging and students’ learning outcomes decline (Olaleye & Daramola, 2021).
Despite the recognized potential of technology to enhance academic success, many public secondary schools in Osogbo still face challenges such as poor infrastructure, irregular power supply, inadequate teacher training, and limited funding (Ogunleye & Adebayo, 2020). These issues raise important questions about how the technological environment in schools influences students’ academic performance. This study, therefore, seeks to examine the role of the school technological environment on the academic performance of students in public secondary schools in Osogbo.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Over the years, the academic performance of students in public secondary schools in Osogbo has been a source of concern to educators, parents, and policymakers. While several factors such as teacher quality, parental involvement, and school management have been identified as determinants of academic achievement, the technological environment of schools remains a critical but underexplored factor (Eze & Okorie, 2020).
Observations reveal that many public schools in Osogbo operate in environments where technological facilities are either obsolete, insufficient, or completely unavailable. Even in schools where such tools exist, teachers often lack the technical skills required to integrate them effectively into classroom teaching (Olatunji & Akinwale, 2022). This situation has limited students’ access to digital learning experiences and modern instructional resources that could enhance comprehension and performance.
Moreover, while the Nigerian government and various non-governmental organizations have made efforts to introduce ICT into secondary education, the actual impact of these initiatives on students’ learning outcomes remains unclear, particularly in Osogbo. This gap in empirical knowledge necessitates an investigation into how the technological environment of schools influences the academic performance of students in public secondary schools in the area.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The main objective of this study is to examine the role of the school technological environment on the academic performance of students in public secondary schools in Osogbo.
The specific objectives are to:

1.5 Research Hypothesis
The study will test the following hypothesis:

H₀: There is no significant relationship between the school technological environment and students’ academic performance in public secondary schools in Osogbo.

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study is significant for several reasons. First, it provides empirical evidence on how technological infrastructure and digital learning resources influence academic performance in Nigerian public secondary schools. The findings will help policymakers and educational administrators in Osun State to identify gaps in ICT implementation and develop strategies for improving technological facilities and training programs for teachers.
Secondly, the study will enlighten teachers on the importance of integrating technology into their instructional practices to enhance student engagement and achievement. It will also serve as a reference point for future research on educational technology and performance improvement in Nigerian schools.
Finally, the study contributes to the existing body of literature on the intersection between technology and education, emphasizing the importance of creating technologically conducive learning environments for sustainable academic growth.
1.7 Scope of the Study
The study focuses on public secondary schools in Osogbo, Osun State. It examines the role of the school technological environment—including the availability, accessibility, and usage of technological tools—on students’ academic performance. The study will cover selected schools within the 2024/2025 academic session and involve both teachers and students as respondents.
Variables such as infrastructure, teacher competence, and student engagement will also be explored as moderating factors influencing the relationship between the technological environment and academic performance.
1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

School Technological Environment: The availability, accessibility, and usage of digital and electronic resources (e.g., computers, internet, multimedia devices) in a school for teaching and learning.

Chapter Two presents the review of related literature. Chapter Three explains the research methodology used in the study. Chapter Four contains data presentation, analysis, and interpretation, while Chapter Five provides a summary, conclusion, and recommendations.
