INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

The family is the primary unit of socialization and plays a crucial role in the upbringing and psychological development of children. Within the family structure, parents and guardians are responsible for nurturing children, transmitting values, and shaping their emotional and cognitive growth. However, changes in family patterns due to divorce, remarriage, separation, and death have led to the emergence of blended families, where step-parents—particularly step-mothers—assume significant roles in child upbringing.

In contemporary Nigerian society, the increasing rate of marital instability and remarriage has contributed to the rise of step-family structures. In urban centers such as Benin City, diverse family arrangements are becoming more common due to factors such as urbanization, migration, economic pressures, and evolving social norms. Within these family systems, step-mothers often take on maternal responsibilities, including caregiving, discipline, emotional support, and socialization of children who may not be biologically theirs.

Traditionally, the role of a mother in African societies is highly valued, encompassing not only biological reproduction but also the moral and emotional upbringing of children. However, the role of step-mothers has historically been perceived with skepticism and, in some cases, negative stereotypes. Cultural narratives, folklore, and societal beliefs often portray step-mothers as harsh, unloving, or even abusive figures. These perceptions can influence how step-mothers are treated within the household and how children respond to them (Goody, 1982).

Despite these stereotypes, many step-mothers play positive and transformative roles in children’s lives. They contribute to the provision of care, guidance, and emotional stability, especially in situations where biological mothers are absent. The effectiveness of step-mothers in child upbringing often depends on factors such as family dynamics, the level of acceptance by children, the support of the spouse, and broader socio-cultural influences.

Psychological development in children involves emotional stability, self-esteem, social competence, and behavioral adjustment. The presence and involvement of a step-mother can significantly influence these aspects of development, either positively or negatively. A supportive and nurturing step-mother can foster a sense of security and belonging, while conflictual relationships may lead to emotional distress, behavioral problems, and identity issues (Hetherington & Kelly, 2002).

In addition, the dynamics of step-motherhood are shaped by cultural expectations and gender roles within Nigerian society. Step-mothers are often expected to fulfill maternal duties while navigating complex relationships with step-children and extended family members. In some cases, they may face resistance, mistrust, or lack of authority, which can affect their ability to effectively contribute to child upbringing.

In Edo State, particularly in Benin City, the coexistence of traditional values and modern influences creates a unique context for examining the role of step-mothers. While traditional norms emphasize respect for elders and family cohesion, modern realities such as education and urban living are reshaping family interactions and expectations.

Despite the growing prevalence of step-family arrangements, there is limited empirical research focusing specifically on the role of step-mothers in child upbringing and psychological development within the Nigerian context. Most existing studies are based on Western societies, which differ significantly in cultural values and family systems. Therefore, there is a need to explore how step-mothers function within Nigerian households and how their roles impact children’s psychological well-being.

This study, therefore, seeks to examine the role of step-mothers in child upbringing and psychological development, with a focus on households in Benin City, Edo State.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The increasing prevalence of step-family structures in Nigerian society has brought attention to the role of step-mothers in child upbringing. However, this role is often surrounded by misconceptions, cultural biases, and practical challenges that can affect both the step-mother and the child’s psychological development.

One of the major problems is the persistence of negative stereotypes associated with step-mothers. These stereotypes, deeply rooted in cultural narratives and societal beliefs, often portray step-mothers as unkind or neglectful. Such perceptions can create preconceived notions among children and extended family members, leading to mistrust, resistance, and strained relationships within the household.

Another significant issue is the challenge of acceptance. Children may find it difficult to accept a step-mother, especially in cases where the biological mother is still alive or where the transition into a blended family is abrupt. This lack of acceptance can hinder the development of emotional bonds and negatively affect the child’s psychological well-being.

Furthermore, step-mothers often face role ambiguity and conflict. Unlike biological mothers, their roles may not be clearly defined, leading to confusion regarding authority, discipline, and emotional involvement. They may struggle to balance being caring figures while also enforcing rules, particularly when their authority is not fully recognized by the children or supported by their spouses.

In addition, the psychological development of children in step-family settings can be affected by family instability, past trauma, or ongoing conflicts. Children who have experienced parental separation, divorce, or loss may exhibit emotional and behavioral challenges. The ability of a step-mother to effectively support such children depends on various factors, including her parenting style, emotional intelligence, and the level of support within the family.

Another critical problem is the lack of empirical data on the specific experiences of step-mothers and their impact on child development in Benin City. While general studies on family structures exist, they often do not address the unique socio-cultural dynamics of step-family relationships in this context. This gap in knowledge limits the ability of policymakers, educators, and social workers to design effective interventions.

Therefore, the problem this study seeks to address is the limited understanding of the role of step-mothers in child upbringing and psychological development, particularly within the socio-cultural context of households in Benin City, Edo State.

1.3 Research Questions

The study seeks to answer the following questions:

1. What roles do step-mothers play in child upbringing in Benin City?

2. How do children perceive and respond to step-mothers in the household?

3. What factors influence the effectiveness of step-mothers in child upbringing?

4. What is the impact of step-mother involvement on children’s psychological development?

1.4 Objectives of the Study

The main objective of this study is to examine the role of step-mothers in child upbringing and psychological development in Benin City, Edo State.

The specific objectives are to:

1. Identify the roles performed by step-mothers in child upbringing.

2. Examine children’s perceptions of step-mothers.

3. Analyze factors affecting the effectiveness of step-mothers.

4. Assess the impact of step-mothers on children’s psychological development.

1.5 Research Hypothesis

H₀: Step-mothers have no significant impact on the psychological development of children in households in Benin City, Edo State.

H₁: Step-mothers have a significant impact on the psychological development of children in households in Benin City, Edo State.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is significant in the following ways:

• It will contribute to existing literature on family sociology and child development in Nigeria.

• It will help parents and guardians understand the importance of step-mother roles in child upbringing.

• It will provide insights for counselors, social workers, and educators dealing with children from blended families.

• It will help in addressing negative stereotypes and promoting healthier family relationships.

1.7 Scope and Delimitation of the Study

This study focuses on the role of step-mothers in child upbringing and psychological development in households in Benin City, Edo State. It examines family dynamics, parenting roles, and children’s psychological outcomes.

The study is limited to selected households in Benin City and does not cover other regions or step-parent types such as step-fathers. Time and resource constraints also limit the scope of the research.
