Project – The Role of the Church in Promoting Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment: A Study of Selected Baptist Churches in Ibadan North Local Government Area, Oyo State.
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
Gender equality and women’s empowerment are important issues in contemporary society because they relate to human dignity, social justice, economic development, family welfare, and the participation of women in decision-making. Gender equality refers to the principle that women and men should enjoy equal rights, opportunities, responsibilities, and access to resources without discrimination based on gender. Women’s empowerment, on the other hand, involves increasing women’s ability to make decisions, exercise control over their lives, access economic opportunities, and participate meaningfully in social, political, religious, and community activities. The United Nations (1979), through the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), established an international framework for eliminating discrimination against women and promoting equality in different areas of life. Similarly, the United Nations General Assembly (2015), through the Sustainable Development Goals, identified gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls as a major global development objective under Goal 5. These frameworks demonstrate that gender equality is not merely a personal or cultural concern but an important aspect of human rights and sustainable development. Consequently, religious institutions, including churches, have a responsibility to examine how their teachings, leadership structures, and community activities contribute to the dignity, inclusion, and empowerment of women.
The church occupies an important position in society because it influences the religious beliefs, moral values, social relationships, and behaviour of its members. Through preaching, Bible study, fellowship, counselling, educational activities, and community outreach, churches can shape attitudes towards women’s rights, responsibilities, leadership, and participation in society. Christianity contains biblical teachings that emphasise the dignity of human beings and their worth before God. Genesis 1:27 states that human beings were created in the image of God, while Galatians 3:28 emphasises the spiritual unity of believers in Christ. These passages provide theological foundations for discussions about human dignity and the inclusion of women in Christian communities. However, the practical interpretation of biblical teachings on gender roles and leadership differs among Christian traditions and congregations. The United Nations (1979) calls for the elimination of discriminatory practices that restrict women’s participation in public and social life. In this context, the church can contribute to gender equality by promoting respect for women, encouraging their participation in church activities, and addressing attitudes and practices that limit their opportunities for personal and collective development.
Women’s empowerment is also closely connected with access to education, economic resources, employment, leadership opportunities, and the ability to make decisions affecting personal and family life. Women who have access to education and economic opportunities are better positioned to contribute to household welfare, community development, and broader economic progress. The World Bank (2024), in Women, Business and the Law 2024, examines legal frameworks affecting women’s economic opportunities, including employment, entrepreneurship, property rights, and other areas of economic participation. The report highlights the importance of laws and institutional arrangements that enable women to participate more fully in economic life. Churches can support these objectives by organising vocational training, entrepreneurship programmes, financial literacy education, leadership development, and initiatives that encourage women’s participation in community development. Such activities can help women develop skills, improve their confidence, and identify opportunities for economic independence. Therefore, examining the role of the church in women’s empowerment requires attention not only to religious instruction but also to the practical programmes through which women may gain skills, resources, and opportunities to improve their lives.
Despite increasing international attention to gender equality, women in many societies continue to experience barriers relating to unequal access to resources, limited leadership opportunities, gender stereotypes, economic dependence, and discriminatory social expectations. Such barriers can affect women’s participation in family decisions, employment, public affairs, and religious institutions. The United Nations (1979) recognises that discrimination against women can occur in political, economic, social, cultural, and other areas of life and requires action to eliminate such discrimination. In Nigeria, questions concerning women’s rights and empowerment are influenced by social traditions, economic circumstances, religious interpretations, and institutional practices. Religious institutions can either reinforce existing gender expectations or provide opportunities for questioning discriminatory attitudes and encouraging more inclusive practices. Adamu and Para-Mallam (2012), in their examination of religion and women’s campaigns for legal reform in Nigeria, demonstrate the relevance of religious actors and religious contexts to debates about women’s rights. This makes it necessary to investigate how churches interpret their responsibilities towards women and whether their activities help address barriers to gender equality in their congregations and surrounding communities.
The role of the church in promoting gender equality is particularly important because religious beliefs can influence how people understand the roles of women and men in leadership, marriage, family life, and public participation. Churches may promote women’s dignity through biblical teaching, pastoral counselling, women’s fellowships, leadership training, and programmes addressing domestic violence and discrimination. At the same time, particular interpretations of scripture or established church practices may affect the positions women can occupy and the extent to which they participate in decision-making. These issues require careful examination rather than the assumption that all churches adopt the same approach to gender equality. The Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women requires states to address discriminatory practices and social patterns that sustain unequal treatment of women (United Nations, 1979). Although religious organisations have their own theological traditions and governance structures, they remain influential settings in which attitudes towards women’s dignity, responsibilities, and opportunities are formed. Therefore, the church’s contribution to gender equality should be examined through both its teachings and its actual practices, including the participation of women in leadership, ministry, planning, and institutional decision-making.
Baptist churches provide a relevant setting for investigating the relationship between Christian religious practice, gender equality, and women’s empowerment. Baptist congregations generally place emphasis on biblical authority, congregational participation, Christian fellowship, evangelism, and service. Their organisational structures and practices provide opportunities to examine how women participate in church leadership, contribute to decision-making, and engage in educational, economic, and community-development activities. Women’s ministries, prayer groups, Bible study, counselling, welfare programmes, and skills-development initiatives may provide opportunities for spiritual growth and practical empowerment. However, the existence of these activities does not automatically establish that women have equal access to leadership or that empowerment programmes produce measurable improvements in their lives. The World Bank (2024) emphasises the importance of examining the institutional and legal conditions that affect women’s opportunities, while Adamu and Para-Mallam (2012) demonstrate the relevance of religious contexts to women’s rights advocacy in Nigeria. Accordingly, investigating selected Baptist churches can help clarify the relationship between religious teachings, institutional practices, and the opportunities available to women within specific congregations.
Ibadan North Local Government Area of Oyo State provides the geographical setting for examining the role of selected Baptist churches in promoting gender equality and women’s empowerment. The study will focus on how the selected churches communicate teachings about women’s dignity and participation, the extent to which women are involved in leadership and decision-making, and the empowerment activities available to female members. It will also examine the challenges that may limit women’s participation and the implementation of church-based empowerment initiatives. Although national and international literature provides a foundation for understanding gender equality and women’s empowerment, it cannot automatically establish the specific experiences of women in the selected Baptist churches in Ibadan North. The United Nations General Assembly (2015) identifies women’s empowerment as an important component of sustainable development, while the United Nations (1979) establishes a framework for addressing discrimination against women. Against this background, the present study seeks to generate context-specific evidence on the contributions and limitations of selected Baptist churches in promoting gender equality and women’s empowerment in Ibadan North Local Government Area, Oyo State.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Gender equality and women’s empowerment remain important concerns because women may encounter barriers in education, economic participation, leadership, access to resources, and decision-making. Although international frameworks recognise women’s rights and the importance of eliminating discrimination, the existence of such frameworks does not automatically guarantee equal opportunities in every community or institution. The United Nations (1979) identifies discrimination against women as a concern requiring action across social, economic, political, and cultural spheres. Churches are influential institutions that can promote respect, fairness, and inclusion through religious teaching and community activities. However, the extent to which selected Baptist churches in Ibadan North Local Government Area actively promote gender equality and women’s empowerment requires investigation. The problem addressed by this study is the need to understand how these churches contribute to improving women’s participation, opportunities, and well-being.
Another problem concerns the relationship between Christian teachings and women’s participation in church leadership and decision-making. Although biblical passages emphasise human dignity and the spiritual unity of believers, interpretations of gender roles differ among Christian communities. Such differences may influence the positions women can occupy, the responsibilities they can undertake, and their involvement in decisions affecting church activities. Adamu and Para-Mallam (2012) demonstrate that religion can be relevant to women’s rights advocacy and legal reform in Nigeria, indicating the importance of examining religious institutions in discussions of gender equality. Nevertheless, the specific practices of the selected Baptist churches cannot be assumed from the broader literature. It is therefore necessary to investigate the opportunities available to women in church leadership, ministry, planning, and decision-making within the study area.
A further problem relates to the extent to which churches provide practical empowerment opportunities beyond preaching and religious instruction. Women may require access to education, vocational skills, entrepreneurship support, financial knowledge, mentoring, and assistance in addressing discrimination or abuse. The World Bank (2024) highlights the importance of institutional conditions and opportunities in shaping women’s economic participation. Although churches may organise women’s fellowships, welfare activities, vocational programmes, and leadership training, the availability, accessibility, and perceived benefits of such activities may vary. Without examining the programmes implemented by the selected Baptist churches, it may be difficult to determine how far their activities support women’s social, educational, economic, and personal development.
The central problem addressed by this study is the need for context-specific evidence concerning the role of selected Baptist churches in promoting gender equality and women’s empowerment in Ibadan North Local Government Area, Oyo State. While existing literature establishes the broader importance of gender equality and the relevance of religious institutions to women’s rights, it does not by itself determine the effectiveness of the particular churches selected for this study. There is therefore a need to investigate their teachings and practices, women’s participation in leadership, the contributions of empowerment programmes, and the challenges affecting these efforts. The findings may provide a basis for recommendations that will help church leaders and women’s ministries strengthen gender equality and empowerment within their congregations.
