INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Love is one of the central themes of the Christian faith and the foundation upon which the relationship between God and humanity is established. Throughout the Scriptures, God is revealed as a loving Father whose desire is to redeem humanity from sin and restore fellowship with Himself. The message of divine love reaches its highest expression in Gospel of John 3:16, which states: “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life” (New King James Version). This verse is regarded by many theologians and biblical scholars as the summary of the Gospel message because it captures the essence of God’s sacrificial love, the mission of Jesus Christ, and the promise of eternal salvation.

The theology of God’s love is deeply rooted in both the Old and New Testaments. In the Old Testament, God demonstrated His love through His covenant relationship with Israel, His acts of mercy, and His willingness to forgive His people despite their disobedience. Passages such as Deuteronomy 7:7–8 and Jeremiah 31:3 portray God as a loving and faithful God who cares for humanity. However, the fullest revelation of divine love is seen in the New Testament through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The coming of Christ into the world was not merely an act of divine intervention but a manifestation of God’s unconditional love toward sinful humanity.

John the Apostle presents love as a major theological concept in his Gospel writings. The Gospel emphasizes that God’s love is universal, sacrificial, redemptive, and transformative. John 3:16 particularly reveals the depth of God’s concern for humanity by declaring that God loved “the world.” The term “world” signifies all humanity regardless of race, nationality, or social status. Through an exegetical and theological analysis of John 3:16, this research intends to contribute to a better understanding of the Christian message of redemption and eternal life.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Many studies focus broadly on salvation without adequately exploring how divine love forms the foundation of redemption.
