Project – Theological Perspectives on Forgiveness and Reconciliation in Resolving Intra-Church Conflicts: A Study of Selected Pentecostal Churches in Benue State

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

Conflict is an inevitable feature of human relationships because individuals and groups differ in interests, expectations, perceptions, values, personalities, and approaches to issues. The church, although a spiritual community established around faith in Jesus Christ, is composed of human beings who possess different backgrounds, experiences, personalities, levels of spiritual maturity, and leadership expectations. Consequently, disagreements and conflicts may arise within Christian communities just as they arise in families, workplaces, and other social institutions. From a Christian theological perspective, however, conflict should not necessarily result in permanent division, bitterness, retaliation, or exclusion. The New Testament presents reconciliation, forgiveness, humility, love, correction, and restoration as important dimensions of Christian community life. Jesus’ teaching in Matthew 18:15–17 provides a process for addressing offences within the Christian community, while Paul repeatedly emphasizes forgiveness, kindness, patience, and unity among believers (Matt. 18:15–17; Eph. 4:1–3, 31–32; Col. 3:12–15). Onyenali and Obasi (2025) similarly observe that Matthew 18:15–17 addresses the management of conflicts among members of the Christian community and presents a process directed toward restoring relationships rather than simply punishing offenders.

Forgiveness occupies a central position in Christian theology because it is connected with the character of God and the redemptive work of Jesus Christ. Christianity teaches that reconciliation between humanity and God is made possible through Christ, and this divine reconciliation establishes a theological foundation for reconciliation among human beings. The Apostle Paul declares that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself and subsequently entrusts believers with the ministry of reconciliation (2 Cor. 5:18–19). Christian forgiveness therefore goes beyond merely forgetting an offence or avoiding confrontation; it involves responding to wrongdoing in ways that seek restoration, release from destructive resentment, and the possibility of renewed relationship. Smedes (1984) presents forgiveness as a process through which people respond to hurts and move toward healing, while Volf (1996) develops the theological concept of “embrace” as an alternative to exclusion and hostility, emphasizing the Christian responsibility to make room for the other in the context of reconciliation.

Reconciliation is also broader than the termination of open disagreement. It concerns the restoration and transformation of relationships that have been damaged by conflict. In Christian theology, reconciliation is rooted in God’s reconciling action through Christ and is expected to become visible in the relationships of believers. John de Gruchy (2002) argues that authentic reconciliation cannot be separated from justice, responsibility, truth, and the restoration of relationships. Similarly, Volf (1996) argues that exclusion can deepen hostility by defining the other as an enemy or outsider, whereas reconciliation requires a movement toward restored relationship and human recognition. This theological understanding is important for intra-church conflicts because a church may formally end a disagreement without actually healing the resentment, mistrust, suspicion, or relational damage produced by the conflict. Therefore, theological reconciliation should involve more than administrative settlement; it should seek genuine restoration of Christian fellowship, dignity, trust, and unity (de Gruchy, 2002; Volf, 1996).

The relationship between forgiveness, reconciliation, and conflict resolution is particularly important within the church because Christian communities are expected to embody the values they proclaim. Jesus’ prayer for the unity of His followers in John 17:20–23 establishes unity as an important dimension of Christian witness, while Paul describes the church as one body whose members should preserve the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace (Eph. 4:1–6). When disagreements among church members become prolonged, they can affect fellowship, participation, leadership relationships, worship, ministry cooperation, and the wider testimony of the church. Lederach (1997) argues that sustainable reconciliation requires attention not only to the immediate manifestations of conflict but also to the relationships and deeper structures that sustain division. This perspective is relevant to churches because resolving an argument without addressing the underlying relational issues may leave the conditions for another conflict intact. Thus, Christian approaches to intra-church conflict require attention to both the immediate dispute and the restoration of relationships.

The Nigerian Pentecostal context makes the study of intra-church conflict particularly significant because Pentecostal churches have become influential religious communities in Nigerian society, while their organizational structures may involve strong leadership personalities, diverse membership groups, ministries, doctrinal interpretations, and competing expectations. Conflict may arise over leadership succession, authority, finances, ministerial responsibilities, appointments, doctrinal interpretations, interpersonal disagreements, ethnic or cultural differences, and perceived injustice. Onyima (2024), in a study of selected Pentecostal churches in Ibadan, establishes that Pentecostal churches are not immune from conflict because they are social communities involving people with differing interests, loyalties, emotions, beliefs, and expectations. The study also examines techniques used by Pentecostal churches to manage and resolve conflicts, demonstrating the relevance of conflict-resolution scholarship to Pentecostal ecclesial life (Onyima, 2024).

The Nigerian Pentecostal experience also demonstrates that unresolved internal conflicts can produce consequences extending beyond the individuals directly involved. Ogbu and Peters (2023), examining the Assemblies of God Church in Nigeria, document historical crises associated with administration, leadership struggles, factionalism, and other forms of internal division. Their study emphasizes the importance of addressing ecclesial divisions in light of Jesus’ prayer for the unity of His followers. More recent research by Adeleye and Aluko (2026) further examines internal conflict-resolution mechanisms in early Nigerian Pentecostalism, identifying issues such as doctrinal disagreements, leadership contestation, public-order concerns, and tensions surrounding authority and sacred space. These studies suggest that Pentecostal churches require effective mechanisms for handling internal disagreements and that theological principles must be connected with practical structures for maintaining ecclesial unity (Ogbu & Peters, 2023; Adeleye & Aluko, 2026).

The relevance of forgiveness and reconciliation becomes even more apparent when viewed within the broader Nigerian and Benue State context. Benue State has experienced significant social tensions and conflicts, and recent scholarship has specifically examined the biblical relationship between forgiveness, reconciliation, and conflict resolution in the state. Nche and Uroko (2026), using the Joseph narrative in Genesis 45:1–18, identify rivalry, resolved anger, humility, and impartial mediation as important elements in a biblical model of reconciliation and discuss its relevance to conflict resolution in Benue State. Although their study focuses on herder-farmer conflict rather than intra-church disputes, its theological emphasis on forgiveness and reconciliation provides a significant contextual basis for investigating how Christian principles can be applied to conflicts within churches in the same environment.

Against this background, the present study focuses specifically on the theological perspectives on forgiveness and reconciliation in resolving intra-church conflicts among selected Pentecostal churches in Benue State. The study is based on the assumption that Christian teachings concerning forgiveness and reconciliation have implications for how believers understand offences, respond to disagreements, restore damaged relationships, and pursue unity within the church. However, the existence of biblical teachings does not automatically mean that such teachings are consistently understood or practiced by every church member. There is therefore a need to investigate the theological understanding of forgiveness and reconciliation among Pentecostal Christians, identify the forms and causes of intra-church conflicts experienced within selected churches, examine the approaches used in resolving such conflicts, and determine the extent to which forgiveness and reconciliation contribute to peaceful and sustainable restoration of relationships. This inquiry is supported by Nigerian scholarship showing that church conflict requires context-sensitive approaches that take account of biblical, denominational, relational, and cultural dimensions (Afolabi, 2023; Onyima, 2024).

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The Christian church is expected to be a community characterized by love, unity, forgiveness, peace, mutual submission, and reconciliation. Biblical teachings repeatedly instruct believers to forgive one another, settle disagreements, restore relationships, and maintain the unity of the body of Christ (Matt. 5:23–24; 18:15–17; Eph. 4:31–32; Col. 3:13). Nevertheless, conflicts continue to occur within Christian congregations. Disagreements that begin as relatively minor interpersonal problems can develop into prolonged disputes involving factions, strained relationships, withdrawal from church activities, leadership challenges, accusations, mistrust, and division. Onyima (2024) confirms that conflict is present within Pentecostal churches and may emerge from opposing interests, opinions, loyalties, emotions, and beliefs. The problem, therefore, is not merely the existence of disagreements but the difficulty some Christian communities experience in addressing those disagreements in ways that produce genuine restoration rather than temporary settlement.

A second problem concerns the gap that may exist between the theological teaching of forgiveness and reconciliation and their practical application in church conflicts. Pentecostal churches frequently emphasize biblical teachings concerning love, forgiveness, unity, prayer, and Christian fellowship. Yet the presence of such teachings does not eliminate disputes arising from leadership, finances, personality differences, ministerial authority, ethnicity, doctrinal interpretations, or perceived injustice. Ogbu and Peters (2023) demonstrate that even a major Pentecostal denomination in Nigeria has experienced prolonged crises associated with leadership struggles, administration, factionalism, and division. Such experiences raise an important theological and practical question: to what extent are Christian principles of forgiveness and reconciliation actually employed when church members or leaders experience serious disagreements? Without examining this question empirically, it may remain difficult to determine whether biblical teaching is being translated into effective conflict-resolution practice within local Pentecostal congregations.

A third problem relates to the tendency to understand reconciliation merely as the termination of open disagreement rather than as the restoration of relationships. A church may resolve a dispute administratively, transfer a leader, separate conflicting parties, establish a disciplinary measure, or persuade individuals to stop arguing without addressing the anger, mistrust, hurt, injustice, or exclusion that produced the conflict. Such an approach may reduce visible tension without producing genuine reconciliation. De Gruchy (2002) cautions against superficial understandings of reconciliation and connects genuine reconciliation with justice and the restoration of relationships, while Lederach (1997) emphasizes that sustainable peacebuilding requires attention to relational and structural dimensions of conflict. Within a church setting, failure to address these deeper dimensions can allow resentment and suspicion to remain beneath the surface and potentially contribute to future conflicts.

The fourth problem is the limited contextual attention given to the theological application of forgiveness and reconciliation to intra-church conflicts in Pentecostal churches in Benue State. Existing Nigerian studies have examined Pentecostal conflict resolution in other locations and have documented broader denominational conflicts, while recent scholarship has explored biblical forgiveness and reconciliation in relation to wider conflicts in Benue State. However, there remains a need to bring these two areas together by examining forgiveness and reconciliation specifically as theological resources for resolving conflicts within Pentecostal congregations in Benue State. Nche and Uroko (2026) demonstrate the relevance of biblical reconciliation to the Benue context, while Afolabi (2023) notes that local church conflict-resolution mechanisms may benefit from engagement with both biblical and culturally grounded approaches. The problem addressed by this study is therefore the need to understand how Pentecostal churches in Benue State interpret and practice forgiveness and reconciliation when internal conflicts arise, and whether these theological principles contribute to the restoration of peace, unity, and healthy Christian relationships.

1.3 Purpose of the Study

The main purpose of this study is to examine the theological perspectives on forgiveness and reconciliation in resolving intra-church conflicts among selected Pentecostal churches in Benue State.

Specifically, the study seeks to examine the biblical and theological foundations of forgiveness and reconciliation, identify the major forms and causes of intra-church conflicts, assess the approaches adopted by selected Pentecostal churches in resolving internal conflicts, and determine the influence of forgiveness and reconciliation on the resolution and restoration of relationships among church members.

1.4 Objectives of the Study

The specific objectives of the study are to:

  1. Examine the biblical and theological perspectives on forgiveness and reconciliation among members of selected Pentecostal churches in Benue State.
  2. Identify the major forms and causes of intra-church conflicts experienced in selected Pentecostal churches in Benue State.
  3. Examine the methods used by selected Pentecostal churches in Benue State to resolve intra-church conflicts.
  4. Determine the influence of forgiveness and reconciliation on the resolution of intra-church conflicts and restoration of relationships among members of selected Pentecostal churches in Benue State.

1.5 Research Questions

The following research questions will guide the study:

  1. What are the biblical and theological perspectives on forgiveness and reconciliation among members of selected Pentecostal churches in Benue State?
  2. What are the major forms and causes of intra-church conflicts experienced in selected Pentecostal churches in Benue State?
  3. What methods are used by selected Pentecostal churches in Benue State to resolve intra-church conflicts?
  4. To what extent do forgiveness and reconciliation influence the resolution of intra-church conflicts and restoration of relationships among members of selected Pentecostal churches in Benue State?

1.6 Research Hypothesis

The following null hypothesis will be tested at the 0.05 level of significance:

H₀: There is no significant relationship between the practice of forgiveness and reconciliation and the effective resolution of intra-church conflicts among members of selected Pentecostal churches in Benue State.

1.7 Significance of the Study

The study will be significant to Pentecostal church leaders because it will provide information on the theological and practical dimensions of managing conflicts among church members. The findings may help pastors, elders, ministers, and other church leaders understand the importance of incorporating biblical forgiveness and reconciliation into conflict-management practices.

The study will also be significant to church members because it will encourage a deeper understanding of Christian responsibilities in situations of disagreement. By emphasizing forgiveness, humility, communication, repentance, restoration, and reconciliation, the study may help members respond to interpersonal conflicts in ways consistent with Christian teaching.

The study will be useful to theological educators and students of Christian Religious Studies because it will contribute to discussions concerning Christian ethics, ecclesiology, pastoral theology, reconciliation theology, and conflict resolution. It may also provide a basis for further academic investigation into the relationship between Christian doctrine and practical church life.

The study may also be useful to Pentecostal denominations and church administrators in developing or improving procedures for handling internal disagreements. The findings could encourage churches to move beyond purely disciplinary or administrative responses toward approaches that also address relational restoration and reconciliation.

Finally, the study will contribute to the growing body of Nigerian scholarship on religion and conflict resolution. Recent studies have shown the relevance of biblical and culturally informed reconciliation approaches to conflict situations in Nigeria, including Pentecostal church settings and the wider Benue context (Afolabi, 2023; Onyima, 2024; Nche & Uroko, 2026).

1.8 Scope of the Study

The study is limited to the theological perspectives on forgiveness and reconciliation in resolving intra-church conflicts among selected Pentecostal churches in Benue State. Geographically, the study will be conducted in selected Pentecostal churches within Benue State.

Thematically, the study will focus on the biblical and theological meaning of forgiveness and reconciliation; Christian teachings concerning forgiveness; reconciliation as a Christian responsibility; causes and forms of intra-church conflicts; conflict-resolution practices within Pentecostal churches; and the contribution of forgiveness and reconciliation to the restoration of relationships and church unity.

The study will focus on adult church members and relevant church leaders, ministers, pastors, and workers who have sufficient experience or knowledge of the selected churches and their approaches to internal conflict. The study will not primarily examine interreligious conflicts, political conflicts, family conflicts, or community-level conflicts except where such issues have a direct bearing on intra-church relationships.
