INTRODUCTION

  • Background to the Study

The application of internet communication in agricultural extension services has gained increasing attention in recent years, particularly in the context of developing countries like Nigeria. Internet-based communication tools have been instrumental in promoting agricultural development by enhancing the accessibility of information, improving communication between extension agents and farmers, and facilitating the sharing of knowledge and innovations. Agricultural extension services aim to bridge the knowledge gap between farmers and technological advancements, thereby fostering improved agricultural practices, productivity, and livelihoods (Oladele, 2017). The use of the internet in these services presents new opportunities for farmers in rural areas, who may otherwise have limited access to timely and relevant information.

Several studies have highlighted the growing role of internet communication in enhancing the effectiveness of agricultural extension programs. In particular, the internet has been used to disseminate information on weather patterns, market prices, and agricultural best practices. Internet communication enables extension workers to share research findings, offer real-time solutions, and provide a platform for farmers to engage with experts (Akinyemi & Odebode, 2019). In Rivers State, where agriculture plays a significant role in the local economy, internet communication can help farmers access critical information related to crop management, pest control, and sustainable farming techniques. As a result, farmers can improve their production efficiency and market access, leading to better economic outcomes.

Moreover, the use of internet communication platforms such as social media, agricultural websites, and mobile applications has made it easier for farmers in cooperative societies to communicate and share experiences. The interaction between farmers through these platforms enables them to discuss challenges, share solutions, and foster collaboration within the agricultural community. A study by Enete and Amusa (2020) revealed that Nigerian farmers increasingly rely on digital platforms for knowledge exchange and capacity building. In Rivers State, cooperative societies are pivotal in the diffusion of agricultural technologies, and the internet serves as an effective tool to amplify the reach and impact of extension services among members of these societies.

In addition to communication, the internet is also playing a critical role in facilitating access to financial and market-related services for farmers. Agricultural cooperatives in Rivers State can leverage the internet to connect with buyers, suppliers, and financial institutions, enhancing their market linkages and access to credit facilities. This, in turn, helps to boost farmers’ income and ensures the sustainability of agricultural enterprises (Saidu et al., 2021). Furthermore, internet-based tools allow for the digitalization of record-keeping, which helps farmers to monitor their activities, track expenses, and improve farm management practices. This modern approach to farm management has shown potential in promoting more organized and profitable agricultural ventures.

Despite the promising advantages of internet communication, several barriers to its adoption among rural farmers in Rivers State exist. Limited access to reliable internet services, lack of technical skills, and high costs of internet-enabled devices are some of the challenges that hinder the full utilization of internet communication tools in agricultural extension. A study by Anyoha (2022) indicated that while internet services are available in some urban and peri-urban areas, many rural farmers still face connectivity issues that limit their ability to benefit from online extension services. Additionally, the lack of digital literacy among farmers often leads to underutilization of available online resources.

Nevertheless, the potential benefits of internet communication in agricultural extension cannot be overlooked. Given the increasing penetration of mobile phones and internet services in Nigeria, including Rivers State, it is essential to harness these tools for agricultural development. As highlighted by Akinyemi and Odebode (2019), rural farmers in Nigeria are gradually adopting the internet for various purposes, including learning new farming techniques, accessing market information, and seeking agricultural advice. For agricultural extension services in Rivers State to achieve their full potential, it is important to address the barriers to internet access and digital literacy while promoting the use of these technologies in agricultural cooperatives.

 

1.2. Statement of the Problem

Agriculture remains a crucial sector for economic development in Nigeria, particularly in Rivers State, where a significant portion of the population relies on farming as their primary source of livelihood. However, despite the pivotal role of agriculture, productivity in the sector remains low, and farmers often struggle with accessing timely and relevant information that could enhance their farming practices. Traditional agricultural extension services, which aim to provide farmers with knowledge and techniques to improve productivity, face significant challenges in reaching rural farmers efficiently. These challenges include limited access to physical extension officers, poor infrastructure, and an inability to disseminate real-time information, all of which limit the effectiveness of extension programs in rural areas.

In recent years, internet communication has emerged as a potential solution to these challenges, offering farmers new avenues to access agricultural knowledge and connect with experts and fellow farmers. Through mobile phones, social media platforms, websites, and online applications, farmers can receive real-time information on crop management, weather updates, market prices, and pest control methods. However, despite the increasing availability of internet communication tools, many farmers in Rivers State’s cooperative societies are still unable to fully leverage these technologies for agricultural extension purposes. This is because the adoption and effective use of internet-based tools face several barriers, including inadequate infrastructure, low levels of digital literacy, and limited access to reliable internet services in rural areas.

While there has been a growing recognition of the potential of the internet in enhancing agricultural extension services, there is limited research on how these tools are specifically being utilized by farmers in cooperative societies in Rivers State. Existing studies on internet use in agricultural extension are either too broad or focus on urban farmers, neglecting the unique challenges and opportunities faced by rural cooperative societies. As a result, there is a lack of comprehensive understanding of the extent to which internet communication is being used by farmers in this region and how it impacts their agricultural practices and productivity. This gap in knowledge has made it difficult for policymakers, agricultural extension agents, and other stakeholders to develop targeted strategies to effectively integrate internet communication tools into agricultural extension services in Rivers State.

Additionally, there is little information on the specific factors that influence the adoption and use of internet communication by farmers in cooperative societies. Factors such as the availability of internet infrastructure, the affordability of internet services, farmers’ technological readiness, and their perceived benefits of using online tools for agricultural extension all play critical roles in determining the success of internet communication in this context. Without a clear understanding of these factors, it is difficult to address the barriers that hinder the effective use of internet-based tools among farmers, leading to missed opportunities for improving agricultural productivity and sustainability.

Furthermore, while some studies have examined the use of internet communication for agricultural extension in other parts of Nigeria and Africa, the unique socio-cultural and economic context of Rivers State may present distinct challenges and opportunities. The region’s agrarian economy, reliance on cooperative societies, and varying levels of digital infrastructure all contribute to the complexities of integrating internet communication into agricultural extension services. Thus, there is a need for context-specific research that examines how internet communication tools can be tailored to suit the needs of farmers in Rivers State’s cooperative societies, ensuring that extension services are both relevant and accessible.

In light of these issues, the problem that this study seeks to address is the limited understanding of how internet communication is being used by selected farmers’ cooperative societies in Rivers State for agricultural extension purposes. This study aims to explore the extent to which internet tools are being adopted, the challenges faced in their usage, and the potential benefits they offer to farmers. By identifying the factors influencing internet adoption and usage, the study will provide insights that can help policymakers and agricultural extension agencies design more effective strategies for incorporating internet-based communication into agricultural extension services in rural areas.

1.3. Aim and Objectives of the Study

The study examines the uses of internet communication in Agricultural extension among selected farmers cooperative societies in Rivers State. The specific objectives are:

  1. To assess the current level of internet usage among farmers in selected cooperative societies in Rivers State.
  2. To identify the specific internet communication tools and platforms being utilized by farmers for agricultural extension purposes.
  3. To evaluate the effectiveness of internet communication in disseminating agricultural information to farmers in the selected cooperative societies.
  4. To explore the challenges faced by farmers in accessing and utilizing internet communication for agricultural extension.

1.4. Research Questions

The research questions are buttressed below:

  1. What is the current level of internet usage among farmers in selected cooperative societies in Rivers State?
  2. Which specific internet communication tools and platforms are being utilized by farmers for agricultural extension purposes?
  3. How effective is internet communication in disseminating agricultural information to farmers in the selected cooperative societies?
  4. What are the challenges faced by farmers in accessing and utilizing internet communication for agricultural extension?

1.5. Research Hypothesis

The hypothetical statement of the study is buttressed below:

Ho: Internet communication is not effective in disseminating agricultural information to farmers in the selected cooperative societies

H1: Internet communication is effective in disseminating agricultural information to farmers in the selected cooperative societies

1.6. Significance of the Study

The significance of this study lies in its potential to bridge the knowledge gap regarding the use of internet communication tools in agricultural extension among farmers in cooperative societies in Rivers State. While the agricultural sector remains a key driver of the state’s economy, challenges such as low productivity, limited access to information, and the inefficient dissemination of agricultural knowledge have hindered growth. This study aims to explore how internet communication can address these challenges by providing farmers with access to vital information, such as real-time weather updates, market trends, pest control strategies, and best farming practices. By investigating the use of internet tools in agricultural extension, the study will contribute to the ongoing conversation about the role of digital technologies in transforming agricultural practices in rural areas.

Moreover, the findings of this study will provide a deeper understanding of the extent to which farmers in Rivers State’s cooperative societies are utilizing internet-based communication for agricultural purposes. While there is a growing body of literature on the role of ICTs in agriculture, much of it focuses on urban farmers or general agricultural development without specific attention to cooperative societies in rural settings. This study will fill this gap by examining the unique characteristics of cooperative societies in Rivers State and the challenges they face in adopting internet communication for extension services. As such, the results could provide invaluable insights into the local context, helping to develop more targeted and contextually relevant strategies for improving agricultural extension services in the region.

The study will also shed light on the key factors that influence the adoption and effective use of internet communication among farmers in cooperative societies. Factors such as digital literacy, internet infrastructure, the affordability of internet access, and the perceived relevance of online tools will be explored. Understanding these factors is crucial because it will help stakeholders, such as agricultural extension agents, government agencies, and non-governmental organizations, to design and implement strategies that can overcome the barriers to internet adoption. By addressing these obstacles, the study will contribute to ensuring that internet-based agricultural extension services are more accessible and beneficial to rural farmers, thereby enhancing productivity and improving livelihoods.

Furthermore, the research will contribute to policy development aimed at improving the agricultural sector in Rivers State. Policymakers and government officials can use the study’s findings to shape policies that promote the integration of internet communication into agricultural extension services. This may include initiatives to improve digital infrastructure in rural areas, promote digital literacy programs for farmers, and subsidize internet access to make it more affordable. By aligning policies with the practical needs and challenges of farmers in cooperative societies, the study will help create a more supportive environment for the adoption of internet communication tools, ultimately leading to improved agricultural practices and increased food security in the region.

This study will also have broader implications for the future of agricultural extension services across Nigeria and other developing countries. As the world continues to digitalize, there is a growing recognition of the importance of integrating modern communication technologies into extension systems. The insights gained from this research can serve as a model for other states in Nigeria and similar countries in Sub-Saharan Africa, where agriculture remains central to economic and social development. By examining the experiences of farmers in Rivers State, the study will contribute to the global dialogue on the role of internet communication in agricultural development, offering lessons on both the opportunities and challenges involved in leveraging technology for rural development.

Finally, the findings of this study will contribute to academic knowledge on the intersection of technology, agriculture, and rural development. The growing body of research on ICTs in agriculture will be enriched by a case study from Rivers State, offering a specific examination of how internet communication is being utilized in a particular context. This will not only add to the literature on agricultural extension but also encourage further research on the adoption of digital tools in rural farming communities. As such, the study will be a valuable resource for scholars, practitioners, and organizations working in the field of agricultural development, as it highlights the role of modern communication tools in transforming traditional farming practices and improving agricultural outcomes.

1.7. Scope of the Study

The study examines the uses of internet communication in Agricultural extension among selected farmers cooperative societies in Rivers State. The study is limited to some group of selected farmers cooperative societies in Rivers State

 

1.8. Operational Definition of Terms

  1. Uses: In this context, “uses” refers to the ways or methods in which something is applied or utilized for a specific purpose. It indicates the various functions or applications that a particular tool, system, or resource can serve to achieve desired outcomes. For instance, the “uses of internet communication” would focus on how the internet is applied to solve problems, disseminate information, or achieve goals in a specific field, such as agriculture.
  2. Internet Communication: Internet communication refers to the exchange of information, ideas, and messages using the internet as the medium. This includes a wide range of tools such as email, social media platforms (e.g., Facebook, Twitter), instant messaging apps (e.g., WhatsApp), video conferencing tools (e.g., Zoom), and websites. Internet communication facilitates real-time, long-distance interactions, allowing people to share knowledge, collaborate, and seek information through digital means.
  3. Agricultural Extension: Agricultural extension is the process by which information, skills, and new technologies are transferred from agricultural researchers and experts to farmers, with the aim of improving agricultural productivity, sustainability, and livelihoods. Extension services provide farmers with knowledge on best practices, pest management, crop production techniques, and market information. These services are crucial for enhancing farming techniques and achieving agricultural development in rural areas.
  4. Farmers: Farmers are individuals engaged in the practice of agriculture, which involves the cultivation of crops, the rearing of animals, or both. They are responsible for producing food, raw materials, and other agricultural products. Farmers can operate on different scales, from smallholder or subsistence farmers to large-scale commercial operations. They play a critical role in the agricultural sector by producing the food and goods that sustain populations and economies.
  5. Cooperative Societies: Cooperative societies are organizations formed by a group of individuals with common economic, social, or cultural goals, who come together to achieve mutual benefits. In the context of agriculture, farmer cooperative societies are groups of farmers who collaborate to share resources, knowledge, and skills to improve productivity and achieve better economic outcomes. These societies may help farmers access credit, buy seeds and tools in bulk, share machinery, and market their products collectively, thus enhancing their collective bargaining power and improving their livelihoods.
