INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
The rapid advancement of information and communication technology (ICT) has significantly transformed educational systems across the world. Technological innovations have revolutionized the way knowledge is created, disseminated, and acquired, leading to the emergence of various digital learning approaches. Among these innovations, e-learning has become one of the most influential developments in contemporary education. E-learning refers to the use of electronic technologies, particularly internet-based platforms, to facilitate teaching, learning, communication, assessment, and academic collaboration. The growing adoption of e-learning platforms in higher education institutions reflects global efforts to improve teaching effectiveness, enhance learning experiences, and promote educational accessibility (Almaiah, Al-Khasawneh, & Althunibat, 2020).
Globally, universities and colleges have increasingly integrated e-learning platforms into their instructional practices to support teaching and learning activities. The development of Learning Management Systems (LMS) such as Moodle, Blackboard, Canvas, Google Classroom, and Microsoft Teams has enabled educators to deliver course content, administer assessments, communicate with students, and monitor academic progress more efficiently. These platforms provide opportunities for flexible learning, increased interaction, resource sharing, and personalized instruction, thereby enhancing educational quality and effectiveness (Dhawan, 2020).
The concept of teaching effectiveness has become a major concern in higher education due to increasing demands for quality education and improved learning outcomes. Teaching effectiveness refers to the extent to which instructional activities facilitate meaningful learning experiences, student engagement, knowledge acquisition, skill development, and academic achievement. Effective teaching involves the appropriate use of pedagogical strategies, instructional resources, communication techniques, and assessment methods to achieve educational objectives. In recent years, e-learning technologies have emerged as important tools for supporting effective teaching practices in higher institutions (Martin, Sunley, & Turner, 2021).
The integration of e-learning platforms into higher education is largely driven by the recognition that traditional classroom-based instruction alone may no longer adequately meet the learning needs of modern students. Today’s learners are increasingly digital-oriented and require flexible learning environments that support independent learning, collaboration, and access to educational resources beyond the physical classroom. E-learning platforms provide such opportunities by enabling students to access instructional materials at any time and from any location, thereby promoting continuous learning and academic engagement (Bond et al., 2021).
One of the major advantages of e-learning platforms is their ability to enhance interaction between lecturers and students. Through discussion forums, virtual classrooms, video conferencing, online assessments, and collaborative tools, e-learning systems facilitate communication and knowledge sharing. These features contribute to improved teaching effectiveness by creating interactive learning environments where students actively participate in the learning process rather than remaining passive recipients of information (Hodges, Moore, Lockee, Trust, & Bond, 2020).
Furthermore, e-learning platforms support learner-centered instructional approaches that encourage active participation, critical thinking, problem-solving, and self-directed learning. Lecturers can utilize multimedia resources such as videos, simulations, animations, podcasts, and interactive presentations to enhance understanding and retention of concepts. Research indicates that the integration of multimedia technologies into teaching improves student motivation, engagement, and academic performance when effectively implemented (Mayer, 2021).
The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 accelerated the adoption of e-learning technologies worldwide. Educational institutions were compelled to shift from traditional face-to-face instruction to online and blended learning approaches in order to ensure continuity of education during lockdowns and movement restrictions. This unprecedented transition highlighted both the opportunities and challenges associated with e-learning implementation in higher education. Many universities invested heavily in digital infrastructure and online learning platforms to sustain academic activities (UNESCO, 2021).
In Nigeria, the use of e-learning platforms has gained increasing attention as higher institutions seek innovative ways to improve teaching and learning processes. The National Policy on Information Technology and various educational reform initiatives emphasize the integration of ICT into education as a means of enhancing instructional delivery and preparing students for participation in a knowledge-based economy (Federal Republic of Nigeria, 2019). Consequently, universities across the country have adopted different e-learning systems to support academic activities.
Despite the growing adoption of e-learning technologies, the level of utilization varies considerably among Nigerian higher institutions. While some universities have successfully integrated digital learning platforms into their academic programmes, others continue to face challenges such as inadequate ICT infrastructure, unreliable internet connectivity, insufficient funding, limited technical support, and inadequate digital literacy among lecturers and students. These challenges may affect the effectiveness of e-learning implementation and its contribution to teaching quality (Aboagye, Yawson, & Appiah, 2021).
The University of Benin has embraced technological innovations as part of its efforts to improve academic excellence and instructional effectiveness. The university has adopted various digital platforms and ICT-based instructional tools to facilitate teaching, learning, assessment, and communication. These technologies provide lecturers with opportunities to deliver course content efficiently, monitor student progress, and engage learners beyond the traditional classroom environment. However, the extent to which these platforms are effectively utilized by lecturers remains a subject of academic and administrative concern.
Teaching effectiveness in higher institutions depends on several factors, including lecturers’ competence, instructional methods, learning resources, student engagement, and institutional support. The utilization of e-learning platforms has the potential to strengthen these factors by providing innovative instructional opportunities. Through online course delivery, virtual discussions, electronic assessments, and digital resource management, lecturers can enhance the quality of instruction and improve learning outcomes. However, effective utilization requires adequate training, technological competence, institutional support, and positive attitudes toward digital learning technologies (Rapanta, Botturi, Goodyear, Guàrdia, & Koole, 2021).
Studies have shown that effective utilization of e-learning platforms contributes to improved instructional delivery, increased student participation, enhanced access to learning materials, and better academic performance. Conversely, inadequate utilization of these technologies may limit their educational benefits and reduce teaching effectiveness. Therefore, the relationship between e-learning platform utilization and teaching effectiveness has become an important area of educational research, particularly within higher education institutions undergoing digital transformation (Martin et al., 2021).
The increasing emphasis on digital learning in Nigerian universities underscores the need for empirical studies that examine how e-learning technologies influence instructional practices and educational outcomes. Understanding the effectiveness of e-learning platform utilization can provide valuable insights for policymakers, university administrators, and educators seeking to improve teaching quality and educational performance.
Against this background, this study seeks to investigate the utilization of e-learning platforms and teaching effectiveness in the University of Benin.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
The integration of e-learning platforms into higher education has been widely promoted as a strategy for improving teaching effectiveness, enhancing student engagement, increasing access to learning resources, and supporting flexible instructional delivery. Universities across the world have increasingly adopted digital learning technologies to meet the changing educational needs of contemporary learners and improve the quality of higher education.
In Nigeria, higher institutions have invested substantial resources in the acquisition and deployment of e-learning technologies to support academic activities. The expectation is that these technologies will facilitate effective teaching, improve communication between lecturers and students, enhance access to educational resources, and contribute to improved learning outcomes. However, the realization of these benefits depends largely on the extent to which e-learning platforms are effectively utilized by lecturers and students.
Despite the availability of various e-learning technologies in many universities, evidence suggests that utilization levels remain inconsistent. Some lecturers continue to rely predominantly on traditional teaching methods, while others face challenges related to technological competence, internet accessibility, inadequate training, lack of technical support, and resistance to technological change. These factors may limit the effective integration of e-learning platforms into instructional practices and consequently affect teaching effectiveness.
At the University of Benin, efforts have been made to promote the use of e-learning technologies in teaching and learning activities. Nevertheless, observations indicate that variations exist in the level of utilization among lecturers and departments. While some academic staff effectively incorporate digital platforms into their teaching, others make minimal use of available technologies. This disparity raises concerns regarding the extent to which e-learning platforms are contributing to effective instructional delivery within the institution.
Furthermore, although numerous studies have examined e-learning adoption and online learning in higher education, relatively few studies have specifically investigated the relationship between utilization of e-learning platforms and teaching effectiveness in the University of Benin. Consequently, there is limited empirical evidence regarding the effectiveness of these technologies in improving instructional practices within the institution.
The problem of this study, therefore, is to determine whether the utilization of e-learning platforms significantly influences teaching effectiveness in the University of Benin and to identify factors affecting their effective use for instructional delivery.
1.3 Purpose of the Study
The main purpose of this study is to examine the utilization of e-learning platforms and teaching effectiveness in the University of Benin.
Specifically, the study seeks to:
- Determine the extent of utilization of e-learning platforms by lecturers in the University of Benin.
- Examine the influence of e-learning platform utilization on teaching effectiveness.
- Identify the benefits of e-learning platform utilization for instructional delivery.
- Determine the challenges affecting effective utilization of e-learning platforms.
- Suggest strategies for improving the utilization of e-learning platforms to enhance teaching effectiveness.
1.4 Research Questions
The following research questions will guide the study:
- What is the extent of utilization of e-learning platforms by lecturers in the University of Benin?

1.5 Research Hypothesis
The following null hypothesis will be tested at 0.05 level of significance:
H₀: There is no significant relationship between the utilization of e-learning platforms and teaching effectiveness in the University of Benin.

It specifically examines the extent of platform utilization, its influence on teaching effectiveness, benefits, challenges, and improvement strategies among lecturers within the institution.
