INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Youth participation in religious activities is a critical factor in shaping both individual spiritual growth and the organizational development of faith-based institutions. In Nigeria, the youth population—defined by the National Youth Policy as individuals aged 15 to 35—represents a significant proportion of society and plays a pivotal role in social, economic, and religious life (National Bureau of Statistics, 2023). Churches, as central social institutions, rely on active youth involvement to sustain congregational vibrancy, leadership continuity, and spiritual development.

The Anglican Church of Nigeria, one of the largest and oldest Christian denominations in the country, has historically emphasized spiritual nurturing, moral education, and community engagement. Traditionally, leadership roles within the church have been dominated by older adults, with limited participation from younger members. However, contemporary challenges such as changing societal values, urbanization, and increased youth unemployment have highlighted the need to actively involve young people in church leadership structures to ensure organizational sustainability and intergenerational knowledge transfer (Nwachukwu & Okeke, 2020).

Youth participation in church leadership encompasses engagement in decision-making processes, planning of church activities, management of youth fellowships, and involvement in worship coordination and outreach programs. Beyond administrative functions, participation also contributes to spiritual development, fostering moral consciousness, theological understanding, and ethical behavior among young congregants (Eze & Nnaji, 2021). Churches that provide avenues for meaningful youth involvement are more likely to cultivate leaders capable of sustaining the spiritual and social missions of the church.

The importance of youth engagement in leadership is further reinforced by biblical teachings that emphasize mentorship, stewardship, and the empowerment of the younger generation (1 Timothy 4:12; Joel 2:28). Christian doctrines advocate for equipping young people with the knowledge, skills, and spiritual maturity necessary to contribute to the church and society. Consequently, understanding the extent and impact of youth participation in leadership is essential for promoting spiritual growth and ensuring effective governance within church structures.

In Enugu, Enugu State, the Anglican Church operates a network of parishes that serve diverse urban and peri-urban communities. Youth fellowships and ministries are present in most parishes, yet the level of youth involvement in formal leadership positions and strategic decision-making varies widely. While anecdotal reports suggest that active participation enhances spiritual growth and strengthens church programs, there is limited empirical research assessing the relationship between youth leadership involvement and spiritual development outcomes.

Given the dual importance of cultivating spiritually mature youth and sustaining organizational effectiveness, there is a need to examine the mechanisms through which youth participation in leadership roles within the Anglican Church influences both personal spiritual development and institutional growth.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the significant youth population in Enugu State and their critical role in church activities, youth representation in leadership structures of the Anglican Church of Nigeria in Enugu is often limited. Leadership positions, strategic committees, and decision-making councils are frequently dominated by older members, creating a potential gap in intergenerational engagement and limiting the influence of young people in shaping church programs.

The limited involvement of youth in leadership can lead to a lack of ownership, diminished motivation to participate in church activities, and reduced opportunities for spiritual mentorship and development. Conversely, churches that provide structured platforms for youth engagement often observe improved spiritual growth, innovation in ministry, and enhanced continuity in organizational leadership.

Although youth fellowships exist across many parishes, there is insufficient empirical evidence on how participation in leadership roles specifically impacts spiritual development among young congregants. Questions remain regarding the extent of youth involvement, the factors enabling or hindering their participation, and the measurable outcomes on their moral and spiritual growth.

Without systematic evaluation, church administrators, policymakers, and religious educators may lack insights into optimizing youth engagement strategies to foster spiritual maturity and strengthen church governance. Therefore, it is necessary to assess the influence of youth participation in leadership on spiritual development within the Anglican Church of Nigeria in Enugu, Enugu State.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The main objective of this study is to examine the influence of youth participation in church leadership on spiritual development in selected parishes of the Anglican Church of Nigeria in Enugu, Enugu State.

The specific objectives are to:

1. Identify the roles and leadership positions available to youth within the Anglican Church in Enugu.

2. Determine the level of youth participation in church leadership and decision-making processes.

3. Assess the impact of youth participation in leadership on spiritual growth and moral development.

4. Examine factors that facilitate or hinder youth involvement in church leadership.

1.4 Research Questions

The study seeks to answer the following questions:

1. What leadership roles are available to youth in the Anglican Church of Nigeria in Enugu?

2. To what extent are youth actively participating in church leadership and decision-making?

3. How does youth participation in leadership influence their spiritual growth and moral development?

4. What factors promote or limit youth involvement in church leadership?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

The study will test the following hypothesis:

H₀: Youth participation in church leadership has no significant influence on spiritual development among members of the Anglican Church in Enugu, Enugu State.

H₁: Youth participation in church leadership has a significant influence on spiritual development among members of the Anglican Church in Enugu, Enugu State.

1.6 Significance of the Study

The findings of this study will provide church leaders with empirical insights into how youth participation in leadership roles contributes to spiritual growth and organizational development. It will guide the Anglican Church in designing policies and programs that foster meaningful youth engagement.

Policymakers and religious educators will benefit from understanding the role of youth in sustaining church operations and spiritual mentorship. Academically, the study contributes to literature on youth leadership, religious education, and church development in Nigeria.

1.7 Scope of the Study

The study focuses on selected parishes of the Anglican Church of Nigeria in Enugu, Enugu State. It examines youth participation in formal leadership roles, decision-making processes, and ministry activities, and evaluates the impact on their spiritual growth. The study is limited to youth aged 15–35 and does not include adult congregants or other denominations.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

Youth Participation: Active engagement of young congregants in leadership roles, decision-making, and ministry activities within the church.

Church Leadership: Positions and roles within the church that influence decision-making, organizational governance, and ministry planning.

Spiritual Development: Growth in religious knowledge, moral consciousness, ethical behavior, and personal faith as a result of engagement in church activities.

Anglican Church of Nigeria: A mainline Protestant Christian denomination operating parishes across Enugu State and Nigeria at large.
