Project – The Importance of Studying Biology in Secondary School

Project – The Importance of Studying Biology in Secondary School

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Education is generally regarded as a fundamental instrument for individual development and national transformation because it equips learners with knowledge, skills, values and competencies needed to function effectively in society. At the secondary school level, education provides a transition between basic education and higher education, vocational training or employment. Science education occupies an important position within this level because scientific knowledge and skills are essential for understanding the natural world and addressing contemporary challenges in health, agriculture, environmental management, technology and industry. The Federal Republic of Nigeria (2013) emphasises the development of scientifically literate individuals as one of the important objectives of the Nigerian education system, particularly through the teaching of science and technology-related subjects.

Biology is one of the major science subjects taught at the senior secondary school level in Nigeria. It is concerned with the systematic study of life and living organisms, including their structures, functions, development, reproduction, relationships and interactions with the environment. The subject covers areas such as cell biology, genetics, ecology, evolution, nutrition, reproduction, physiology, microorganisms and conservation. Because these areas relate directly to human beings, plants, animals and the environment, Biology provides learners with knowledge that is relevant to both school learning and everyday life. According to the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC, 2012), the secondary school Biology curriculum is designed to help learners acquire appropriate scientific knowledge, practical skills and attitudes that can enable them to understand biological phenomena and apply such knowledge to real-life situations.

The study of Biology is particularly important because human beings are biological organisms whose survival depends on an understanding of biological processes. Students learn through Biology about the structure and functions of the human body, nutrition, respiration, reproduction, excretion, growth, disease and other processes associated with human life. Such knowledge can contribute to students’ understanding of their own bodies and encourage healthy practices. Knowledge of biological principles can also help young people understand the causes, transmission and prevention of certain diseases and the importance of personal hygiene, sanitation and healthy nutrition. According to World Health Organization (2021), health literacy enables individuals to obtain, understand, evaluate and use health information to make appropriate decisions, while science education can contribute to the development of the knowledge required for such informed decision-making.

Biology is also important in the development of students’ understanding of public health and disease prevention. Secondary school students are exposed to issues involving infectious diseases, nutrition, reproductive health, substance use, environmental sanitation and personal hygiene. Biology provides scientific explanations for many of these issues rather than leaving students to depend entirely on informal sources of information. Through appropriate Biology instruction, students can understand how microorganisms cause disease, how diseases are transmitted, how the body’s defence mechanisms operate and how preventive measures can reduce health risks. The World Health Organization (2020) stresses that health education and health literacy are important components of empowering individuals and communities to make informed health decisions.

Another important reason for studying Biology is its relevance to agriculture and food security. Agriculture depends substantially on biological processes involving plants, animals, microorganisms, soil organisms, reproduction, heredity, pest control and ecological relationships. Students who understand these processes can better appreciate the scientific foundations of crop and animal production. Biology can therefore provide foundational knowledge that is useful for students who later pursue agriculture, agricultural science, animal science, crop science, fisheries or related fields. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO, 2021) emphasises the importance of science, innovation and knowledge in transforming agricultural and food systems and improving food security, thereby demonstrating the continuing relevance of biological knowledge to societal development.

The study of Biology is equally relevant to environmental conservation and sustainable development. Human activities such as deforestation, pollution, urbanisation, overexploitation of natural resources and improper waste disposal can negatively affect ecosystems and biodiversity. Biology enables students to understand ecological relationships, food chains, food webs, population changes, nutrient cycles and the consequences of environmental degradation. Through these concepts, students can develop greater awareness of their responsibility towards the environment. According to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO, 2020), education for sustainable development helps learners develop the knowledge, skills, values and attitudes required to address environmental and other sustainability challenges.

Biology also contributes to the development of scientific literacy among secondary school students. Scientific literacy involves the ability to understand scientific concepts, use scientific knowledge to identify questions and draw evidence-based conclusions, and apply scientific understanding to real-life situations. Biology is particularly suitable for promoting these competencies because learning the subject can involve observation, classification, experimentation, measurement, analysis and interpretation. The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD, 2019) explains that scientific literacy involves the ability to engage with science-related issues and ideas as a reflective citizen, including explaining phenomena scientifically and interpreting evidence. Biology education can therefore contribute to broader intellectual development rather than simply preparing students for examinations.

The practical nature of Biology further increases its importance in secondary school education. Unlike subjects that may be learned predominantly through theoretical explanation, Biology provides opportunities for learners to observe specimens, conduct experiments, examine structures, investigate biological processes and carry out field studies. Practical activities can help students connect theoretical knowledge with observable phenomena and develop scientific process skills. Nneji et al. (2024), in a study of senior secondary school students in Nigeria, reported that students exposed to practical work experience performed better academically than those exposed to a modified lecture strategy. This finding suggests that practical engagement is an important component of effective Biology teaching and learning.

Biology is also important because it provides a foundation for several professional and academic disciplines. Students who intend to pursue medicine, nursing, pharmacy, medical laboratory science, veterinary medicine, agriculture, biotechnology, environmental science and related fields require knowledge of biological concepts. Consequently, secondary school Biology can serve as an important foundation for students’ future educational and occupational aspirations. The NERDC (2012) Biology curriculum recognises the importance of developing learners’ understanding of biological concepts and their application to personal, societal and vocational needs. Thus, Biology can influence not only students’ present academic development but also their future educational choices.

Furthermore, the study of Biology can promote students’ ability to solve problems and make decisions based on evidence. Biological investigations often require students to identify problems, formulate questions, observe phenomena, collect information, analyse results and draw conclusions. These activities encourage students to move beyond memorising information towards applying knowledge to situations and problems. The National Research Council (2012) identifies scientific practices such as asking questions, developing and using models, planning investigations, analysing data and constructing explanations as central to meaningful science learning. Biology therefore provides opportunities for students to develop intellectual skills that can be useful in other academic and practical areas.

Despite the importance of Biology, students may not always develop adequate interest in or appreciation of the subject. One possible reason is the manner in which the subject is taught. When Biology is presented mainly through lectures, note-taking and memorisation, students may find some concepts abstract and difficult to understand. In contrast, teaching approaches that relate biological concepts to students’ experiences and encourage active participation may improve their understanding and engagement. Ayanwande, Udeani and Okunuga (2025), in their study of senior secondary school Biology students in Lagos State, found that context-based learning had a significant effect on students’ academic achievement, highlighting the importance of connecting Biology instruction with meaningful contexts.

The availability and effective use of instructional resources also influence Biology teaching and learning. Biology requires appropriate laboratory equipment, specimens, charts, models, microscopes and other teaching materials to enable students to observe and investigate biological phenomena. Where such resources are unavailable or inadequate, students may receive limited opportunities for practical learning. The NERDC (2012) curriculum emphasises practical activities as part of Biology instruction, indicating that effective implementation requires more than classroom explanations. Similarly, research on science education has consistently demonstrated that the quality of learning experiences is influenced by instructional resources and the opportunities students have to engage directly with scientific phenomena.

Teacher competence is another factor that may determine how effectively students benefit from Biology education. Biology teachers are expected to possess adequate subject-matter knowledge, pedagogical knowledge and practical skills to present complex concepts in ways that students can understand. They must also be able to select appropriate instructional strategies and resources according to the nature of the topic and the characteristics of the learners. Darling-Hammond (2000) established a strong relationship between teacher quality and students’ learning outcomes, while more recent research continues to emphasise teacher professional competence as an important component of effective science teaching.

Students’ attitudes towards Biology may also affect the extent to which they benefit from studying the subject. Attitude can influence students’ willingness to participate in classroom activities, undertake practical work, study independently and pursue science-related educational opportunities. Students who perceive Biology as useful and relevant to their lives may be more motivated to learn it than those who see it as merely an examination subject. Osborne, Simon and Collins (2003) observed that students’ attitudes towards science are influenced by several factors, including the perceived relevance of science, classroom experiences and teaching approaches. This makes students’ perception of the importance of Biology an important area of investigation.

The relevance of Biology is particularly significant in Nigeria, where challenges relating to public health, environmental degradation, food security, biodiversity conservation and scientific development continue to require scientifically informed citizens. The country needs individuals who can understand biological and environmental problems and contribute to their solution through education, research and professional practice. The Federal Republic of Nigeria (2013) therefore places emphasis on the development of individuals who can contribute to national development through knowledge and skills acquired through education.

In Lagos State, the importance of Biology education is further reinforced by the state’s large and diverse population and its complex environmental and public health challenges. Lagos is a highly urbanised environment in which issues such as waste management, pollution, sanitation, population pressure and environmental sustainability have direct implications for human and ecological wellbeing. Biology provides students with concepts that can help them understand the relationship between human activities and environmental conditions. The Lagos State Government (2022) has continued to emphasise environmental sustainability, sanitation and the management of the state’s environmental challenges, areas in which biological and ecological knowledge are directly relevant.

Research evidence from Lagos also indicates that Biology education remains an important area of educational investigation. Ayanwande et al. (2025) found that the use of context-based learning improved Biology achievement among senior secondary school students in Lagos State. In another recent study, Raheem (2025) examined parental socioeconomic status and parental education as predictors of Biology achievement among senior secondary school students in Lagos State. These studies suggest that Biology learning outcomes are influenced by a range of educational and social factors and that continued investigation of Biology education in specific school contexts is necessary.

Education District IV provides a suitable context for examining students’ perceptions of the importance of studying Biology. The district contains secondary schools serving students from different backgrounds and operating within the broader educational structure of Lagos State. Investigating five selected secondary schools within the district can provide useful information concerning how students perceive the relevance of Biology to their health, environment, future careers, agriculture, scientific knowledge and everyday lives. Such evidence may help teachers and school administrators understand areas where students require greater encouragement or improved learning experiences.

The importance of studying Biology should therefore be considered from a broad perspective rather than solely in terms of examination performance. Biology contributes to students’ understanding of themselves and other living organisms, provides knowledge relevant to health and disease prevention, promotes environmental awareness, supports agricultural understanding, develops scientific literacy and prepares learners for further education and careers in biological and health-related disciplines. The NERDC (2012) curriculum similarly presents Biology as a subject through which students can acquire knowledge, skills and attitudes relevant to their personal and societal needs.

It is against this background that the present study examines The Importance of Studying Biology in Secondary School: A Study of Five Selected Secondary Schools in Education District IV, Lagos. The study seeks to establish how students perceive the importance of Biology and the extent to which they recognise its relevance to their academic development, health, environment, agriculture, everyday life and future career opportunities. The findings are expected to provide useful information for Biology teachers, school administrators, parents, curriculum planners and education authorities interested in improving the teaching and learning of Biology in secondary schools.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Biology occupies an important position in secondary school education because it provides knowledge about living organisms, the human body, health, agriculture, environmental conservation and other aspects of life. It is also relevant to several professional disciplines and contributes to the development of scientific literacy. The Nigerian secondary school curriculum recognises Biology as a science subject, and the NERDC curriculum provides for its teaching at the senior secondary level. However, the formal inclusion of Biology in the curriculum does not necessarily mean that students understand or appreciate why the subject is important.

One major problem is that some secondary school students may perceive Biology largely as a subject involving the memorisation of definitions, structures, classifications and processes. When biological concepts are taught without sufficient connection to practical experiences and everyday life, students may fail to recognise the usefulness of the knowledge they acquire. Such perceptions may reduce students’ interest in the subject and potentially affect their participation and achievement.

A related problem is the difficulty students may experience in understanding abstract biological concepts. Biology contains several concepts that require more than verbal explanation. Cells, genetics, physiological processes, ecological relationships and microscopic structures may be difficult for learners to understand when adequate instructional materials, laboratory activities and practical demonstrations are unavailable. Evidence from Nigerian research indicates that practical activities and context-based instructional approaches can significantly improve students’ Biology achievement.

Another problem concerns the availability and utilisation of instructional facilities. Effective Biology education requires appropriate learning resources, including laboratories, specimens, charts, models and other instructional materials. Where such resources are inadequate or poorly utilised, students may have limited opportunities to develop practical skills and experience Biology as an investigative science. Recent research on Biology curriculum implementation in Nigeria has identified inadequate laboratory facilities, insufficient instructional resources and weaknesses in curriculum implementation as continuing challenges.

There is also a concern that students may not sufficiently appreciate the relationship between Biology and their everyday lives. Biology is directly related to issues such as personal hygiene, nutrition, disease prevention, reproductive health, environmental sanitation, agriculture and conservation. Yet, if classroom instruction focuses predominantly on examination requirements, students may acquire factual knowledge without fully understanding how biological knowledge can be applied to everyday problems.

Furthermore, the career relevance of Biology may not be adequately appreciated by all students. Although Biology provides a foundation for careers and further study in areas such as medicine, nursing, pharmacy, agriculture, biotechnology and environmental science, some students may not clearly understand the relationship between secondary school Biology and future career opportunities. This may influence the level of interest and commitment they demonstrate towards the subject.

The problem is also relevant to Lagos State because existing research indicates that Biology teaching and learning continue to attract attention within the state. Ayanwande et al. (2025), for example, found that context-based learning had a significant positive effect on Biology achievement among secondary school students in Lagos State. Similarly, Raheem (2025) examined factors associated with Biology achievement among students in Lagos State, demonstrating that Biology learning outcomes remain an important area of educational research.

However, much of the available research focuses on specific factors such as instructional methods, practical activities, socioeconomic background or academic achievement. Less attention may be given to the broader question of how important students themselves consider the study of Biology to be, particularly within specific schools in Education District IV. Understanding students’ perceptions is important because students are the direct beneficiaries of Biology education, and their appreciation of the subject can influence their motivation, engagement and willingness to pursue further studies in science-related areas.

Therefore, the problem of this study is the apparent gap between the recognised educational importance of Biology and the extent to which secondary school students appreciate, understand and value that importance. It is not sufficient for Biology to appear in the school curriculum; students should also understand its relevance to their health, environment, agriculture, future careers, scientific development and everyday decision-making. The study therefore seeks to investigate the importance of studying Biology among students in five selected secondary schools in Education District IV, Lagos, with a view to providing evidence that may assist teachers, school administrators, parents and education authorities in strengthening Biology education.

1.3 Purpose of the Study

The general purpose of this study is to examine the importance of studying Biology in secondary schools, with particular reference to five selected secondary schools in Education District IV, Lagos.
