The Major Ethnic Groups in Mauritius

The Indo-Mauritians, Creoles, and Sino-Mauritians are the  there distinct cultural communities/major ethnic groups in Mauritius.
In terms of sheer numbers, over 68% of Mauritius’s population identifies as Indo-Mauritius. People of Indian descent were imported to Mauritius in the 19th century to work on the sugar cane farms. While the majority of Indo-Mauritians are Hindu, a sizeable Muslim minority also exists.

About a quarter of Mauritius’s population is of Creole descent. They are descended from African slaves who were brought to Mauritius by French and British colonizers during the island’s colonial history.

Creoles are people that speak a language and culture that are distinct from those of other peoples because of their blending of African, French, and English traditions.Only over 3% of the population identifies as Sino-Mauritian, making it the smallest ethnic minority in Mauritius. They are the offspring of Chinese people who settled in Mauritius in the late 19th and early 20th century.

There are also minor settlements of Franco-Mauritians, descendants of French pioneers, and Agalega Islanders, a small community of people who dwell on two tiny islands off the coast of Mauritius.
One of the island nation’s greatest strengths is the fact that its people represents a wide range of cultural backgrounds. People of all walks of life may coexist peacefully on the island of Mauritius, earning it a reputation as one of the world’s most accepting places to live.
