CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
- BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Motivation is an indispensable aspect of teaching and learning situation, nowadays, many students are performing very poorly, simply because they lack motivation to encourage or help them to learn. This problem is more serious in local areas where auxiliary teachers are employed to teach. In most cases such teachers do not have the necessary requirement for teaching. Even in the urban areas there are a lot of problem ranging from shortage of instructional materials to poor working conditions of the teachers. This is why the researchers desired to investigate “The effect of motivation on academic performance in some selected primary schools in Gwale local government area of Kano state”
- The Brief Description of Gwale Local Government Area of Kano State
Gwale local government was carved out form Kano Municipal Local government council on 14th December in 1996.
Gwalelocal government is an area in Kano state, Nigeria Gwale was carved out from Kano Municipal local government Council on 14thDecember in 1996. Its headquarters are in the surbub of Gwale it has an area of 18Km2and a population of 362,059 at the 2006 census.
Gwale L.G.A count as semi-urban town doubling as the L.G.A headquarters, with its area council/covering other communities like Mandawari, Kabuga, Gyaranya, Dandago, Diso, Galadanchi, Gorondutse, and Gwale. Actually speaking it is difficult to trace who first refer to the area as “Gwale but we can easily understand that Gwale is a short form of qualified pronoun”.
Gwale is one of the serving fourty four local governments areas located in the central corner of Kano State senatorial zone. With its capital administrative headquarters in the Gwale town, under Kano urban area comprising of six other local governments.
The Gwale local government councils heads the public administration in Gwale local govt area which is made up of ten wards represented by ten councilors inclusive of the chairman who heads the executive arm of the local government area.
Geographically, the local government is located in the Kano central commercial center. It has an area of 230 square kilometers and a population of 940,000 in 2006 National Census, there are 29 wards in the local government with one districts head. Hausa and English are the main languages of communication in the area.
Education institutions, which include: (Bayero University, Kano, Federal College of Education, Kano, Aminu Kano College of Legal and Islamic Studies, School of Management Studies and Northwest University). There are many primary school and secondary school, which includes public schools and private school. Such as

- Dorayi Babba Primary School

While some of the secondary schools includes:-
- Dorayi Babba Secondary Schools
- Government Secondary School Goron Dutse
- Government Arabic Secondary School Gwale and
- Government Secondary School Gwale.
- Statement of The Problem
The rate of learning among students in Gwale LGA seemed to be very slow from observation. This may be connected to the poor use of motivation in supporting learning in crucial. This research hope in investigate the extent to which teachers in Gwale LGA, apply motivation to enhance the teaching and learning.
- Research Questions
To guide this research, the following research questions were asked.
- Do the teacher in Gwale LGA Apply motivation?
- Do the teachers of Gwale LGA use motivation appropriately in their teaching?
- Did Student in Gwale LGA learning through Motivation?
- What are the factors hindering the effective performance of the students in Gwale Local government area of Kano state.
- What are the roles of community towards motivation of students in Gwale Local government area of Kano State
- What are the problems associated with effective performance among learners?
- Objectives of the Study
The objectives of this study are to find out the following;
- To find out if the teachers apply motivation in teaching and learning in Gwale local area.
- To determine the use of motivation in teaching in Gwale local government area of Kano.
- To find out if student learn through the use of motivation for teaching in Gwale local government area of Kano state.
- To examine the roles of the community towards motivation of the students in Gwale local government area of Kano State.
- To suggest how slow learners and retarded students can be motivated to learn at their own pace.
- Significance of the Study
The significance of this research work is to help the entire community, parents, government, agencies, responsible for training children (Ministries of Education). To realize the importance of motivation to positive academic performance of the learners, it will also outline various ways by which students can be motivated, assist students that are poorly motivated to be guided. If properly implemented, the ideas of this study will enable the young ones realized that quality education is better than being crazy about money early, in life only to constitute social nuisance later in life.
- Scope and Limitation
This study is limited to some selected schools in Gwale local government area of Kano state. The investigation will be carried out in some selected schools in Gwale local government area of Kano due to the time factors and resources. The research, studying the presence and absence of motivation and it’s uses in some selected schools in Gwale LGA.
The researchers limited the study to six selected secondary schools in Gwale local government area of Kano state.
- Definition of the Key Terms
Effect: According to Sidney I. Landau (1981). Effect means the result of an action. The impression produced purport reality goods, property, etc
Motivation: According to World Book Encyclopedia (2004) motivation is commonly refers to anything that causes people to behave as they do most people have a clear sense of what is feel Like to be motivated to do something. Motivation refers to desire, and need that arouse and individual and direct him/her toward a specific goals.
Academic: According to World Book Encyclopedia (2004) academics is a team that refers primarily to certain rights claimed by professors at universities and colleges.
Performance: This means the action of carrying out, ding, performing in the performance of one’s regular duties, the efficient performance of an automobile (World Book Encyclopedia, 2004).
