1.0 INTRODUCTION

Star-delta starting is widespread in Europe, and was hardly every used in the united state unti1 the manufacturer of large centrifugal air conditioning units started using them. Since more and more buildings are becoming centrally air conditioned, this starting method has become more popular in the United States.

Star delta starting accomplishes reduced voltage by first connecting the motor leads into a star configuration for starting. The motor started in the star connection will receive approximately 58% of the normal voltage and develop approximately 83% torque.

Star delta motors are specially wound with SIX leads brought out to enable the winding to be connected either in star or in delta. When a star delta starter is energized, two contactors close, with one contactor connecting the winding in a star configuration and voltage. After a time delay, the star contactor opens (momentarily de-energizing the motor), and the third contactor closed to reconnect the motor to the lines with the windings connected in Delta. Since the leads of the moor are disconnected and then reconnected, the star – Delta starter system is inherently an open transition type.

The appeal of this starting method, as with the part winding voltage reducing equipment such as resistors and transformers. Star – Delta gives higher starting torque per line ampere than a part winding, with noise and vibration considerably less.

Star – Delta starters have the disadvantage of being open transition; however, closed transition; versions are available at additional cost. In closed transition, the motor windings are kept energized for the few cycles required to transfer the motor windings from star to Delta such starters are resistor bank – hence the additional cost. Stating three phase motor with star – Delta starting methods is generally more economical.
