INTRODUCTION

• Background to the Study

One of the most prominent factors affecting single parents’ ability to raise a child is financial stability. According to a study by Carlson et al. (2011), single-parent families are more likely to experience financial hardship than dual-parent families. This can result in increased stress for the parent, limited resources for the child, and fewer opportunities for extracurricular activities or higher education. The lack of financial security can also impact the child’s emotional well-being, leading to feelings of insecurity and anxiety. The aim of the study is to examine factors affecting single parents’ upbringing of a Child. A case study of yangoji ward in kwali area council FCT Abuja. The specific objectives are:

1. To identify the main challenges faced by single parents in raising a child in Yangoji ward.
2. To examine the impact of financial constraints on single parents in providing for their child’s needs.
3. To explore the emotional and psychological effects of single parenthood on both the parent and the child.
4. To assess the support systems available to single parents in Yangoji ward and their effectiveness.

The hypothetical statement of the study is buttressed below:

1.6. Significance of the Study

This study is significant as it aims to shed light on the unique challenges and dynamics that single parents in Yangoji Ward, Kwali Area Council, FCT Abuja, experience in the upbringing of their children. The study examines factors affecting single parents’ upbringing of a Child. A case study of Yangoji Ward in Kwali Area Council FCT Abuja.

1.8. Operational Definition of Terms

Factors: In the context of this study, factors refer to the various elements or conditions that influence the experiences and outcomes of single-parent households. These factors can be social, economic, psychological, or environmental and can have a significant impact on how single parents raise their children. These may include financial resources, cultural norms, support systems, employment status, mental health, and community structures, among others.

Single Parents: Single parents are individuals who are responsible for raising one or more children without the support of a partner. This may be due to separation, divorce, widowhood, or other reasons that result in the absence of one parent in the child’s life. A single parent may be either a mother or a father who takes on the primary caregiving role, making all key decisions related to their child’s upbringing, including providing for their needs, ensuring their emotional and physical well-being, and guiding their development.

Upbringing of a Child: The upbringing of a child refers to the process of raising and nurturing a child from infancy through adolescence into adulthood. It encompasses the various ways in which parents or caregivers influence the child’s physical, emotional, social, and intellectual development.
