INTRODUCTION

The impact of ethnicity and religion on voting behavior is particularly pronounced in Jos North, which is characterized by a complex mixture of ethnic groups including the Berom, Ngas, and Hausa, as well as various religious affiliations, primarily Christians and Muslims. Nwachukwu (2020) asserts that ethnic identity politics in Jos North often results in a strong attachment to political candidates who belong to one’s ethnic or religious group. The aim of the study is to examine the influence of identity politics on voting behavior in plateau state case study of Jos North. The specific objectives are:

1. To examine the historical background of identity politics in Plateau State and its impact on voting behavior.
2. To analyze the role of ethnic and religious identities in shaping voter preferences in Jos North.
3. To investigate the influence of political rhetoric and messaging on identity-based voting patterns.
4. To assess the correlation between identity politics and electoral outcomes in Jos North.

The study examines the influence of identity politics on voting behavior in Plateau State case study of Jos North. The study is limited to voters in Jos North, Plateau State.

1.8. Operational Definition of Terms

Influence: Influence refers to the power or capacity to have an effect on the character, development, or behavior of someone or something. In the context of politics, it refers to the ability to shape or change public opinion, individual decisions, or societal outcomes through persuasion, authority, or power.

Identity: Identity is the characteristics, qualities, beliefs, and values that define an individual or group. It encompasses various aspects such as ethnicity, religion, gender, nationality, social class, and personal experiences. In political contexts, identity often refers to the collective sense of belonging to a group that shares common traits, which can influence how individuals perceive themselves and others in a society.

Politics: Politics refers to the activities, actions, and processes used to gain and hold power in a government or to influence the policies and actions of a government. It involves the processes through which decisions are made for a society, including the distribution of resources, rights, and responsibilities. Politics can occur at local, national, or international levels and often includes the strategies of political parties, public officials, and citizens.

Voting Behavior: Voting behavior refers to the actions or patterns exhibited by individuals or groups when participating in elections. It includes the psychological, social, and economic factors that influence how and why people cast their votes. Factors such as party affiliation, issues of personal or national importance, identity (ethnic, religious, or other), candidates’ characteristics, and external influences can all shape voting behavior. This study area seeks to understand why voters make the choices they do and how these choices impact electoral outcomes.
