Project – Assessment of effect of deforestation on the Socio-Economic activities in Central Senatorial Districts of Kogi State Nigeria

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

  • Background to the Study

Deforestation, the large-scale removal of forest cover, has emerged as a major environmental and socio-economic issue globally. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO, 2020), the world loses approximately 10 million hectares of forest annually, with developing nations experiencing the highest rates. This rapid forest depletion significantly affects the livelihoods of communities, particularly those reliant on forest resources for income, food, and shelter. Forests serve as a critical source of timber, fuelwood, and non-timber forest products (NTFPs), which are foundational to many local economies. Their destruction directly threatens the income base of rural households and undermines broader economic stability (Angelsen & Wunder, 2003).

A number of studies have linked deforestation to declining agricultural productivity. Forest clearing often leads to soil degradation, reduced rainfall, and increased erosion, all of which negatively impact farming activities (Geist & Lambin, 2002). Smallholder farmers are especially vulnerable, as they rely on stable climate conditions and fertile soils for subsistence agriculture. As forest ecosystems decline, so too does their capacity to regulate water cycles and microclimates, essential for sustaining crop yields. This ecological disruption translates into economic hardship for farmers, ultimately driving migration, poverty, and food insecurity in affected regions (Nkonya et al., 2016).

Deforestation also has significant implications for employment. The forest sector, which includes logging, agroforestry, and the collection of NTFPs, provides jobs for millions, particularly in rural settings. As forests disappear, opportunities for income generation diminish, leading to rising unemployment and underemployment (Mogaka et al., 2001). This situation is especially dire in Sub-Saharan Africa, Southeast Asia, and parts of South America, where forest-based livelihoods form the economic backbone of communities. The socio-economic strain of unemployment often triggers urban migration, intensifying pressure on urban infrastructure and services (Barbier, 2004).

Moreover, forest loss affects community health and education. Forests provide medicinal plants and clean water, both of which are crucial for maintaining public health. Deforestation can lead to water scarcity and the spread of vector-borne diseases, undermining well-being and increasing healthcare costs (Myers, 1997). In addition, the economic strain caused by loss of forest income often forces families to withdraw children from school, particularly girls, thereby perpetuating cycles of poverty and limiting human capital development (Pattanayak et al., 2004). These indirect consequences highlight the broader socio-economic ripple effects of deforestation beyond immediate income loss.

Governance and institutional factors also play a role in mediating the socio-economic impacts of deforestation. Weak land tenure systems, poor enforcement of forest protection laws, and corruption can exacerbate deforestation and reduce community resilience (Ostrom, 1990). Conversely, community-based forest management (CBFM) and sustainable forestry practices have been shown to mitigate some negative effects by empowering local communities to manage resources and benefit economically from forest conservation (Pagdee, Kim, & Daugherty, 2006). These findings suggest that policy interventions should not only aim to reduce deforestation but also strengthen socio-economic adaptation mechanisms.

In conclusion, deforestation poses significant threats to socio-economic activities by disrupting agriculture, employment, health, and education, especially in forest-dependent regions. The impacts are complex and often interlinked, requiring multi-sectoral responses that integrate environmental conservation with socio-economic development. Future research should focus on long-term community resilience strategies, incorporating both traditional knowledge and modern ecological practices to foster sustainable livelihoods in forested regions.

  • Statement of the Problem

Deforestation remains a significant environmental issue across many developing countries, and in Nigeria, it has reached alarming proportions. The Central Senatorial District of Kogi State, which comprises local government areas such as Okene, Adavi, Okehi, Ajaokuta, and Ogori-Magongo, is not exempt from this trend. The area, once rich in natural forest resources, has witnessed increased deforestation due to logging, agriculture, mining, and infrastructural development. Despite growing concerns, little empirical data exists to capture how this environmental degradation affects the socio-economic livelihood of the people who depend heavily on the forests for survival.

The indigenous population of this district relies significantly on forest resources for farming, fuelwood, herbal medicine, and small-scale businesses such as charcoal production and hunting. However, the progressive loss of forest cover threatens these sources of income and livelihood, leading to increased poverty, food insecurity, and economic instability. Yet, there is a lack of comprehensive assessments examining the direct and indirect effects of deforestation on these socio-economic aspects. This knowledge gap hinders effective policy formulation and implementation that could mitigate the adverse impacts of forest loss.

Furthermore, deforestation can lead to environmental consequences such as soil erosion, loss of biodiversity, and microclimate changes, which in turn negatively influence agricultural productivity. Since agriculture is a major occupation in the Central Senatorial District, especially subsistence farming, any disruption to the ecosystem can drastically reduce crop yield, increase the cost of farming inputs, and threaten food availability. These outcomes often force residents to migrate or seek alternative livelihoods that may not be sustainable, further aggravating the region’s socio-economic challenges.

The pressure from population growth, industrial expansion, and weak enforcement of environmental regulations continues to accelerate the rate of deforestation in the area. Yet, community awareness and engagement regarding sustainable forest management practices remain limited. This raises concerns about the long-term socio-economic resilience of the district and underscores the urgency of a systematic evaluation of how deforestation is shaping life and livelihood in the region.

Moreover, policy and development interventions aimed at improving the economic conditions of the people in Kogi State often overlook the critical role of environmental sustainability. There is a pressing need to understand how deforestation alters the structure of local economies, affects traditional practices, and impacts access to essential forest products. Without such understanding, interventions may fail to address root causes or may produce short-term gains with long-term costs to both the environment and the people.

In light of these issues, this study seeks to assess the effect of deforestation on the socio-economic activities in the Central Senatorial District of Kogi State. The findings are expected to provide evidence-based insights that can inform policy, enhance environmental conservation strategies, and promote sustainable livelihoods. It will also help identify specific socio-economic groups most affected by forest loss, enabling targeted interventions and inclusive planning.

1.3. Aim and Objectives of the Study

The aim of the study is to examine assessment of effect of deforestation on the Socio-Economic activities in Central Senatorial Districts of Kogi State Nigeria. The specific objectives are:

  1. To analyze the relationship between deforestation and changes in local economic activities.
  2. To assess the impact of deforestation on the livelihoods of communities dependent on forest resources.
  3. To identify the socio-economic factors driving deforestation in the study area.
  4. To evaluate the effectiveness of current conservation efforts in mitigating the negative effects of deforestation on socio-economic activities.

1.4. Research Questions

The research questions are buttressed below:

  1. How does deforestation impact changes in local economic activities?
  2. What is the impact of deforestation on the livelihoods of communities reliant on forest resources?
  3. What socio-economic factors drive deforestation in the study area?
  4. How effective are current conservation efforts in mitigating the negative effects of deforestation on socio-economic activities?

1.5. Research Hypothesis

The hypothetical statement of the study is buttressed below:

Ho: Deforestation has no significant effect on the livelihoods of communities dependent on forest resources

H1: Deforestation has significant effect on the livelihoods of communities dependent on forest resources

1.6. Significance of the Study

This study is significant as it sheds light on the growing issue of deforestation and its direct implications on the socio-economic wellbeing of communities within the Central Senatorial Districts of Kogi State, Nigeria. These districts, like many others in the country, rely heavily on forest resources for livelihood activities such as farming, hunting, fuelwood collection, and herbal medicine. By investigating how deforestation impacts these activities, the research contributes to a broader understanding of environmental degradation and its socio-economic consequences.

The findings of this research will be valuable to policy makers and government institutions in Kogi State, as it provides evidence-based insights into how the depletion of forest resources is disrupting local economies. Such data is critical in shaping responsive policies and sustainable development plans that prioritize both environmental conservation and community livelihoods. Furthermore, it will help guide resource allocation and the implementation of reforestation or alternative livelihood programs.

Environmental advocacy groups and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) working in the area will also benefit from this study. It offers a detailed account of the human impact of deforestation, which can strengthen advocacy efforts, improve community engagement strategies, and support funding applications for environmental protection initiatives. NGOs can use the data to tailor interventions that are both ecologically and socially sensitive.

Academically, the study contributes to existing literature on the socio-economic impacts of environmental change in sub-Saharan Africa, particularly Nigeria. While there are numerous studies on deforestation, fewer focus on its localized economic and social effects in specific Nigerian regions. This study fills that gap and can serve as a valuable resource for future researchers and students interested in environmental science, economics, and rural development.

The research also holds significance for the local communities themselves, as it brings attention to the often-overlooked voices of rural dwellers who are most affected by environmental degradation. Through participatory research and local engagement, the study encourages awareness and ownership of forest conservation efforts among community members, potentially leading to grassroots solutions and behavioral change.

Lastly, this study aligns with global development goals, particularly the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including SDG 13 (Climate Action) and SDG 15 (Life on Land). By exploring the intersection of environmental degradation and socio-economic development, the study emphasizes the importance of integrating ecological preservation with human development—a principle at the heart of sustainable growth.

1.7. Scope of the Study
