INTRODUCTION

• Background to the Study

According to Santrock (2018), during adolescence, peer groups become highly influential, often shaping behavior, attitudes, and academic outcomes. This influence is particularly pronounced among junior secondary school students who are navigating critical developmental transitions. Peer groups can serve as both supportive networks and sources of distraction, depending on the values and behaviors they promote. As such, the relationship between peer group dynamics and study habits is both complex and significant.

Research by Wentzel and Caldwell (1997) emphasizes the dual nature of peer influence. Positive peer groups may encourage academic engagement by sharing study materials, motivating each other, and fostering competitive learning environments. In contrast, negative peer influence can result in disengagement, truancy, and poor time management. Junior secondary school students are especially vulnerable due to their need for social acceptance and identity formation, often leading them to conform to group norms even at the expense of their academic goals.

1.6. Significance of the Study

1.8.  Operational Definition of Terms

Impact: Impact refers to the effect or influence that one factor has on another. In the context of this study, it describes the extent to which peer group influence alters or shapes the study habits of junior secondary school students, either positively or negatively.

Peer Group Influence: Peer group influence is the effect that a group of individuals of similar age or social status (peers) has on a person’s attitudes, values, behaviors, and decision-making. For students, this often involves adopting similar academic behaviors, study patterns, or attitudes toward schoolwork due to the desire for acceptance or belonging within the group.

Junior Secondary School: Junior secondary school refers to the stage of formal education that comes after primary school and before senior secondary education, typically including students between the ages of 11 and 14. It usually consists of the first three years of secondary education (often referred to as JSS1–JSS3 in countries like Nigeria).

Students: Students are individuals enrolled in an educational institution for the purpose of learning. In this context, the term refers specifically to junior secondary school students who are in a critical phase of cognitive, emotional, and social development.

Study Habit: Study habit refers to the regular, repeated practices and strategies that a student uses to learn and retain academic material. This includes time management, note-taking, setting academic goals, reading routines, and the environment in which studying takes place. Good study habits are associated with academic success, while poor study habits often lead to underperformance.
