Project – The Practice of Christian Forgiveness and Its Impact on Church Unity in Nigerian Churches
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
Forgiveness is a central theme in Christian theology and practice. It is an act of releasing an offender from guilt or punishment and a demonstration of divine grace as modeled by Jesus Christ. In Christian teaching, forgiveness is not merely a moral recommendation but a divine command that sustains unity and love among believers (Matthew 6:14–15; Colossians 3:13). The church, as a body of believers, is expected to reflect God’s character by practicing forgiveness as a means of promoting reconciliation, peace, and unity (Agu, 2021).
In the Nigerian Pentecostal context, church unity is often challenged by interpersonal conflicts, leadership struggles, doctrinal differences, and offences among members (Adogame, 2013). These issues, if not properly handled through biblical forgiveness, can lead to disunity, division, and loss of spiritual vitality within the church. Forgiveness, therefore, is essential not only for personal spiritual growth but also for the collective harmony of the body of Christ. According to Olagunju (2020), forgiveness restores relationships and reinforces the communal identity of the church as a family of God.
The Pentecostal movement in Lagos, Nigeria, is known for its vibrancy, diversity, and emphasis on spiritual renewal. However, the same diversity often gives rise to misunderstandings and offences that can threaten the unity of the church. As Owoeye (2018) observes, many Pentecostal churches experience internal conflicts resulting from human weaknesses, competition among leaders, and unmet expectations among members. In such situations, forgiveness becomes a crucial factor in maintaining peace and ensuring the continuity of the mission of the church.
Forgiveness is also a test of genuine Christian maturity. The ability to forgive reflects the depth of one’s relationship with Christ and understanding of grace (Ephesians 4:32). Theologically, the practice of forgiveness mirrors the redemptive work of Christ on the cross, where divine forgiveness paved the way for humanity’s reconciliation with God (Stott, 2006). Therefore, a forgiving church is more likely to remain united, spiritually healthy, and effective in fulfilling the Great Commission.
This study, therefore, seeks to examine the practice of Christian forgiveness and its impact on church unity in three selected Pentecostal churches in Lagos, with the aim of understanding how forgiveness among members and leaders fosters reconciliation and promotes spiritual cohesion within the church community.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the strong biblical emphasis on forgiveness, many churches in Nigeria continue to experience internal divisions, conflicts, and breakdowns in relationships among members and leaders. In some Pentecostal churches, offences are left unresolved, leading to bitterness, factionalism, and even the establishment of splinter groups (Nwachukwu, 2019). Lack of genuine forgiveness among believers often weakens the moral and spiritual authority of the church, affecting evangelism, fellowship, and communal growth.
While many church leaders preach about forgiveness, the practical demonstration of forgiveness within congregations remains inconsistent. Offences arising from leadership succession, financial management, and interpersonal relationships often linger for years, creating tension and mistrust (Ibrahim, 2022). Consequently, the unity of the body of Christ is undermined, and the church’s testimony before the world is compromised.
Therefore, this study seeks to investigate how the practice of Christian forgiveness contributes to church unity and to identify the challenges that hinder forgiveness among members of Pentecostal churches in Lagos.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The general objective of this study is to examine the practice of Christian forgiveness and its impact on church unity in selected Pentecostal churches in Lagos.

First, it contributes to theological scholarship by deepening the understanding of forgiveness as a spiritual and social practice within the Nigerian Pentecostal context. It will provide empirical evidence on how forgiveness affects church unity, thereby enriching pastoral theology and Christian ethics.
Secondly, the findings will help church leaders and ministers develop effective conflict resolution strategies grounded in biblical principles. It will also guide believers in cultivating a forgiving spirit that enhances love, peace, and cooperation within the church community.
Finally, the study will serve as a reference for theological students, researchers, and Christian organizations interested in promoting unity and spiritual growth in the church.
1.7 Scope of the Study
This study focuses on three selected Pentecostal churches in Lagos State, Nigeria. The study will examine the perception and practice of forgiveness among pastors, church workers, and members. It will explore how forgiveness impacts unity, fellowship, and church growth. The study is limited to Lagos metropolis due to its diverse and active Pentecostal presence.
1.8 Limitations of the Study
The study may face limitations such as respondents’ reluctance to discuss personal or sensitive church conflicts and possible bias in self-reported attitudes toward forgiveness. Time and financial constraints may also limit the scope of data collection. Nevertheless, efforts will be made to ensure objectivity and reliability through careful research design and ethical considerations.
