INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

The church is not only a spiritual institution but also an organized community that requires effective structures to achieve its divine mandate. Church committees are among the key administrative organs designed to ensure orderly functioning, promote accountability, and foster love and unity among members. In the early church, committees or groups such as the seven deacons in Acts 6:1–7 were appointed to manage practical affairs, demonstrating that administration is integral to ministry (Adeboye, 2019).

In the Nigerian church context, committees play crucial roles in various areas such as finance, welfare, evangelism, education, and conflict resolution. Through these committees, members participate in decision-making and service delivery, which strengthens their sense of belonging and unity (Ojo, 2021). Committees are expected to operate under Christian values of love, forgiveness, and integrity, ensuring that administrative functions align with biblical principles and the mission of the church (Okafor, 2018).

Love and forgiveness are central to the Christian faith and essential for maintaining harmony within church committees and the entire congregation. Love fosters cooperation, respect, and teamwork, while forgiveness restores relationships and prevents division (Ephesians 4:2–3; Colossians 3:13). When church committees practice these virtues, they create an environment conducive to effective administration and spiritual growth (Adebayo, 2020).

However, the Nigerian church faces challenges such as leadership conflicts, lack of transparency, and interpersonal tensions among committee members. These issues often lead to inefficiency and, at times, disunity within the church (Ibrahim, 2021). For committees to function effectively, they must not only possess administrative skills but also exhibit spiritual maturity rooted in love and forgiveness.

Therefore, this study examines the role of church committees in promoting love, forgiveness, and effective administration in three selected churches in Nigeria, focusing on how these committees can strengthen church unity and organizational effectiveness through biblical leadership principles.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the growing importance of committees in church administration, many Nigerian churches continue to experience challenges in maintaining love, forgiveness, and efficiency within these groups. Some committees are marked by rivalry, favoritism, and poor communication, which hinder the smooth running of church affairs (Olagunju, 2022). In some cases, committee members hold grudges or engage in power struggles that result in division and poor decision-making.

Moreover, administrative lapses such as mismanagement of church resources, lack of accountability, and absence of teamwork undermine the purpose for which committees are established (Ademola, 2020). These shortcomings contradict the biblical expectation that church leaders should manage the household of God with integrity, wisdom, and love (1 Timothy 3:1–10).

The problem, therefore, lies in the gap between the spiritual ideals of love and forgiveness and their practical application in church committee operations. This study seeks to investigate how church committees can serve as instruments for promoting love, forgiveness, and effective administration, using three selected churches in Nigeria as case studies.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The main objective of this study is to examine the role of church committees in promoting love, forgiveness, and effective administration in Nigerian churches.

The specific objectives are to:

1. Identify the various types and functions of church committees in Nigerian churches.

2. Examine how church committees promote love and unity among members.

3. Investigate how forgiveness contributes to conflict resolution and effective administration within church committees.

4. Assess the relationship between committee leadership and administrative efficiency in the church.

5. Suggest strategies for improving love, forgiveness, and administrative effectiveness in church committees.

1.4 Research Questions

This study seeks to answer the following research questions:

1. What types of committees exist in Nigerian churches and what are their roles?

2. How do church committees promote love and unity among members?

3. In what ways does forgiveness enhance conflict resolution and teamwork in church administration?

4. How does effective committee leadership influence church administration?

5. What measures can strengthen love, forgiveness, and effective administration in church committees?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

The following hypothesis will be tested in this study:

• H₀ (Null Hypothesis): There is no significant relationship between the role of church committees and the promotion of love, forgiveness, and effective administration in Nigerian churches.

• H₁ (Alternative Hypothesis): There is a significant relationship between the role of church committees and the promotion of love, forgiveness, and effective administration in Nigerian churches.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is significant for several reasons.
First, it will contribute to the understanding of how church committees can effectively combine spiritual principles with administrative practices. It emphasizes that church governance should reflect Christlike virtues of love and forgiveness to sustain harmony and productivity.

Secondly, the findings will help pastors, church leaders, and administrators identify strategies to strengthen cooperation and transparency within their committees. It will also serve as a guide for training programs aimed at developing spiritually mature and administratively competent committee members.

Lastly, the study will provide valuable insights for theological institutions, Christian organizations, and researchers interested in the intersection of church leadership, administration, and Christian ethics in Nigeria.

1.7 Scope of the Study

This study focuses on three selected churches in Nigeria, chosen to represent different denominational and administrative structures. The research will cover various committees such as finance, welfare, evangelism, and planning committees. It will examine how these committees promote love, forgiveness, and effective management of church activities. Although the study is limited to three churches, its findings may be applicable to other Christian congregations in Nigeria.

1.8 Limitations of the Study

The study may be limited by factors such as restricted access to certain church records or reluctance of committee members to disclose internal challenges. Time and financial constraints may also limit the breadth of data collection. Nevertheless, careful sampling, confidentiality, and objectivity will be maintained to ensure the reliability and validity of the findings.

1.9 Definition of Key Terms

• Church Committee: A group of appointed church members responsible for specific administrative or spiritual functions within the church, such as finance, welfare, or evangelism.

• Love: The selfless and unconditional affection that believers are commanded to show one another, reflecting the nature of God (1 Corinthians 13:4–8).

• Forgiveness: The act of releasing resentment or anger toward someone who has caused offence, in obedience to Christ’s teachings (Matthew 6:14–15).

• Effective Administration: The ability to manage church affairs efficiently, transparently, and in line with biblical and organizational principles.

• Nigerian Churches: Christian congregations operating within Nigeria, encompassing various denominations including Pentecostal, Anglican, and Evangelical traditions.
