CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

English Language occupies a central position in Nigeria’s educational system as it serves as both the medium of instruction and a compulsory subject at all levels of education. It is the language of administration, law, commerce, and inter-ethnic communication. Despite its significance, students’ performance in English Language at both internal and external examinations such as the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and the National Examinations Council (NECO) has been persistently poor (Adeniran, 2020). This trend has raised concern among educators and stakeholders, who have traced part of the problem to inadequate use of instructional materials in teaching and learning processes.

Instructional materials are the tools or devices used by teachers to facilitate effective learning. They include visual aids such as charts, pictures, maps, and real objects; audio aids such as radios and tape recorders; and audio-visual aids such as television, projectors, and multimedia resources (Ibe-Bassey, 2018). When used appropriately, these materials make abstract concepts concrete, sustain learners’ attention, and bridge the gap between theory and practice (Ogunniyi, 2019).

In English Language instruction, the effective use of instructional materials can improve learners’ mastery of grammar, vocabulary, reading comprehension, and writing skills (Okoro, 2021). For instance, using audio recordings for pronunciation lessons or visual aids for vocabulary enhancement helps students to relate words with meanings more easily. However, many secondary schools in Nigeria, particularly in Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos State, face challenges such as inadequate funding, lack of modern instructional materials, and teachers’ limited competence in the use of available resources (Ajayi & Olumide, 2022).

Furthermore, research has shown that schools that integrate instructional materials into teaching often record higher student engagement and improved academic performance (Bello & Oke, 2019). This underscores the importance of examining how instructional materials are being utilized in English Language classrooms in Alimosho LGA, with a view to identifying their impact on learning outcomes and suggesting strategies for improvement.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the recognized importance of instructional materials in enhancing learning, their utilization in secondary schools remains inadequate. In many English Language classrooms, teachers rely heavily on verbal instruction, neglecting the use of instructional aids that could simplify difficult topics and motivate learners. Many schools in Alimosho LGA also suffer from inadequate provision of teaching aids, poor maintenance of existing materials, and insufficient teacher training in instructional technology (Okafor, 2020).

The consequence of this inadequacy is reflected in students’ poor performance in English Language, as evidenced by low grades in WAEC and NECO results. The persistent failure rate raises questions about the teaching methods and instructional resources available to teachers. It is against this background that this study investigates the use of instructional materials in enhancing students’ learning of English Language in secondary schools within Alimosho Local Government Area.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The main objective of this study is to examine the use of instructional materials in enhancing students’ learning of English Language in secondary schools in Alimosho LGA.
The specific objectives are to:

1. Identify the types of instructional materials used by English Language teachers in secondary schools in Alimosho LGA.

2. Examine the extent to which instructional materials are used in teaching English Language.

3. Determine the impact of instructional materials on students’ learning outcomes in English Language.

4. Identify challenges faced by teachers in the use of instructional materials in teaching English Language.

1.4 Research Questions

This study seeks to answer the following questions:

1. What types of instructional materials are used by English Language teachers in secondary schools in Alimosho LGA?

2. To what extent are instructional materials used in the teaching of English Language?

3. What impact do instructional materials have on students’ learning of English Language?

4. What challenges do teachers face in the use of instructional materials in teaching English Language?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

H₀₁: There is no significant relationship between the use of instructional materials and students’ learning of English Language in secondary schools in Alimosho LGA.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study will be significant to various stakeholders in education.

• Teachers will benefit by understanding the importance of instructional materials and how to effectively use them to enhance teaching and learning outcomes.

• Students will benefit as improved instructional methods can make English Language lessons more engaging and meaningful, thereby enhancing academic achievement.

• School Administrators and Policymakers will find the study useful for planning and resource allocation, particularly in the provision of modern teaching aids.

• Researchers will find this study valuable as it adds to the growing body of literature on the role of instructional materials in language education.

1.7 Scope of the Study

This study is limited to selected public and private secondary schools in Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos State. It focuses on the use of instructional materials in teaching English Language and their impact on students’ learning outcomes. The respondents will include English Language teachers and students in selected schools.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

• Instructional Materials: Tools and devices (such as textbooks, charts, videos, audio recordings, and flashcards) used by teachers to facilitate effective learning.

• Learning: The process through which students acquire knowledge, skills, attitudes, or understanding through study or experience.

• English Language: A compulsory subject and medium of instruction in Nigerian schools, encompassing reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills.

• Enhancement: The process of improving or making the learning of English Language more effective through the use of instructional aids.
