Project – Effect of Collaborative Learning Strategy on Students’ Performance in English Grammar in Junior Secondary Schools in Ifo
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Education remains one of the most significant instruments for human development, social transformation, and national advancement. Through education, individuals acquire knowledge, skills, attitudes, and competencies necessary for effective participation in society. Within the school system, language education occupies a central position because language serves as the major medium through which knowledge is transmitted, evaluated, and applied. In Nigeria, English language occupies a particularly important position because it functions as the official language, the language of instruction at higher levels of education, and a major tool for communication, administration, science, technology, and commerce. Consequently, proficiency in English language is essential for students’ academic success across various subjects (Bamgbose, 2018).
The teaching and learning of English language in Nigerian schools involve several components, including oral communication, reading comprehension, vocabulary development, writing skills, and grammar. Among these components, grammar serves as the foundation upon which effective communication is built. Grammar provides learners with the rules and structures required to construct meaningful sentences and communicate ideas accurately. A strong understanding of grammatical principles enables students to express themselves clearly in both written and spoken forms. According to Crystal (2019), grammar represents the systematic arrangement of words and structures that allows individuals to produce meaningful expressions within a language. Therefore, students’ competence in English grammar significantly influences their overall language performance and academic achievement.
Despite the importance of English grammar in the Nigerian education system, many students continue to demonstrate inadequate mastery of grammatical concepts. Poor performance in grammar-related tasks has remained a major concern among educators, parents, and policymakers. Students at the junior secondary school level often experience difficulties in areas such as sentence construction, tenses, concord, parts of speech, punctuation, and the correct application of grammatical rules. These challenges have been attributed to several factors, including ineffective teaching approaches, limited learner participation, inadequate instructional materials, large classroom sizes, and insufficient opportunities for students to practise language skills (Ezeokoli & Ugwuanyi, 2020).
Traditionally, English grammar instruction in many Nigerian classrooms has been dominated by teacher-centred approaches where teachers explain grammatical rules while students passively listen, memorise, and reproduce information during examinations. Although teacher explanation remains useful in introducing concepts, excessive dependence on lecture-based methods may limit students’ active engagement, critical thinking, and practical application of grammar rules. Modern educational theories emphasise that learners achieve better understanding when they actively participate in constructing knowledge rather than merely receiving information from teachers (Vygotsky, 1978; Bruner, 1996).
One instructional approach that has received increasing attention in contemporary education is collaborative learning strategy. Collaborative learning refers to an instructional method where students work together in small groups to achieve shared academic goals, solve problems, exchange ideas, and support one another’s learning process. Unlike traditional approaches where the teacher is the primary source of knowledge, collaborative learning positions students as active participants who interact with their peers and develop understanding through social engagement. According to Johnson and Johnson (2019), collaborative learning encourages positive interdependence, individual accountability, interpersonal skills, and group processing, which collectively enhance students’ learning experiences.
The theoretical foundation of collaborative learning is strongly connected to the social constructivist theory of learning proposed by Vygotsky (1978). The theory argues that learning occurs through social interaction and that learners can achieve higher levels of understanding when they engage with more knowledgeable peers and receive appropriate support. Vygotsky’s concept of the Zone of Proximal Development suggests that students often learn more effectively when they collaborate with others who possess different levels of knowledge and skills. In the context of English grammar instruction, collaborative learning provides opportunities for students to discuss grammatical concepts, correct mistakes, explain ideas, and practise language usage collectively.
Research evidence indicates that collaborative learning strategies can improve students’ academic performance by increasing motivation, participation, confidence, and deeper understanding of subject content. Slavin (2014) explains that cooperative and collaborative learning approaches improve achievement because students are encouraged to explain concepts to one another, engage in meaningful discussions, and take responsibility for their learning outcomes. Similarly, Gillies (2016) notes that structured group interactions enhance students’ cognitive development because learners are exposed to diverse perspectives and problem-solving approaches.
In language learning contexts, collaborative strategies have been found to promote communication skills and improve learners’ ability to apply linguistic knowledge. Through group discussions, peer teaching, cooperative exercises, and shared writing activities, students receive immediate feedback and develop greater confidence in using language structures. According to Richards and Rodgers (2014), communicative and interactive teaching approaches are more effective in language classrooms because they provide learners with meaningful opportunities to use language rather than simply memorise rules.
The relevance of collaborative learning is particularly important at the junior secondary school level because this stage represents a critical period where students develop foundational academic skills necessary for future educational advancement. Students at this level require learning environments that encourage participation, creativity, and independent thinking. Effective grammar instruction should therefore move beyond memorisation of grammatical rules to activities that enable learners to apply those rules in practical communication situations.
In Ogun State, particularly in Ifo Local Government Area, concerns about students’ performance in English language examinations have continued to attract attention among stakeholders in education. Many junior secondary school students demonstrate weaknesses in grammatical accuracy, written expression, and sentence formation. These challenges may affect their performance not only in English language but also in other subjects where English serves as the medium of instruction. Since academic assessment at various educational levels depends heavily on students’ ability to communicate effectively in English, improving grammar competence remains an important educational priority.
The adoption of collaborative learning strategies may provide a practical solution to some of the challenges associated with conventional grammar instruction. By allowing students to work together, discuss grammatical concepts, and engage in peer-assisted learning, collaborative learning may increase understanding and improve academic outcomes. However, despite the potential benefits of this strategy, its application in English grammar classrooms in many Nigerian junior secondary schools remains limited. Some teachers continue to rely mainly on traditional methods due to factors such as lack of training, classroom management concerns, and limited awareness of learner-centred instructional approaches.
Therefore, investigating the effect of collaborative learning strategy on students’ performance in English grammar is necessary to provide empirical evidence on its effectiveness. Such a study will contribute to understanding whether collaborative approaches can enhance grammar achievement among junior secondary school students in Ifo. The findings may provide useful information for English language teachers, curriculum planners, school administrators, and policymakers seeking effective strategies for improving language education outcomes.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
The persistent decline in students’ performance in English language, particularly in grammar, remains a major challenge within Nigerian secondary education. Although English language is a compulsory subject in Nigerian schools and serves as a foundation for academic communication, many students continue to experience difficulties in understanding and applying basic grammatical principles. At the junior secondary school level, students often struggle with sentence construction, subject–verb agreement, verb usage, punctuation, and other essential grammatical structures required for effective communication.
The poor performance of students in English grammar has raised concerns among teachers and educational stakeholders because grammatical competence influences students’ ability to perform effectively in other academic areas. Students who lack adequate grammar knowledge may experience difficulties in writing assignments, understanding examination questions, and expressing ideas clearly. Despite continuous efforts by education authorities to improve English language teaching, achievement levels among many students remain unsatisfactory.
One major factor contributing to this problem is the continued dominance of teacher-centred instructional methods in many English language classrooms. In several junior secondary schools, grammar lessons are often characterised by teacher explanations, note-taking, memorisation of rules, and completion of exercises without sufficient opportunities for interaction and practical application. Such approaches may encourage passive learning and limit students’ ability to develop confidence in using grammatical structures independently.
Furthermore, the limited use of learner-centred strategies such as collaborative learning may reduce students’ engagement during grammar lessons. When students are not actively involved in the learning process, they may perceive grammar as abstract, difficult, and unrelated to real-life communication. The absence of peer interaction and cooperative activities may also prevent students from benefiting from shared knowledge, peer correction, and group problem-solving.
Although previous studies have examined the effectiveness of collaborative learning in improving students’ achievement in various subjects, there remains a need for more evidence regarding its influence on English grammar performance, particularly among junior secondary school students in Ifo. Some teachers may be uncertain about whether collaborative learning can produce better outcomes compared with conventional teaching methods. Therefore, empirical investigation is required to determine whether collaborative learning strategy significantly affects students’ performance in English grammar.
The problem of this study, therefore, is that despite the importance of grammatical competence for students’ academic success and communication ability, many junior secondary school students continue to demonstrate poor performance in English grammar. This situation creates the need to examine whether the adoption of collaborative learning strategy can improve students’ achievement in grammar. Hence, this study seeks to investigate the effect of collaborative learning strategy on students’ performance in English grammar in junior secondary schools in Ifo.
