INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study

The rapid advancement in information and communication technologies (ICTs) — including computers, smartphones, the internet, and educational software — has transformed the way students access, process, and apply knowledge (Adebayo & Adesanya, 2021). In many developing countries like Nigeria, digital technologies are increasingly being adopted in secondary schools to improve teaching and learning processes, enhance student engagement, and boost academic performance (Ogunleye & Oke, 2020).
Globally, digital technology has redefined education through e-learning platforms, virtual classrooms, digital libraries, and interactive learning tools that allow for self-paced and collaborative learning (Anderson & van Weert, 2020). In Nigeria, the Federal Ministry of Education and the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) have encouraged the use of ICT in schools as part of the National ICT in Education Policy (Federal Ministry of Education, 2019). The aim is to prepare students for a knowledge-driven economy and to ensure that learning outcomes align with global standards.
In Lagos State, particularly in Ikeja Local Government Area, the use of digital devices such as laptops, tablets, projectors, and educational apps has become more visible in both public and private secondary schools. Teachers increasingly integrate digital tools for instructional delivery, assignments, and assessments, while students use them for research, online tutorials, and communication (Ojo & Omotayo, 2022). However, despite these opportunities, concerns remain about the extent to which digital technologies positively influence students’ academic achievements. Some studies report improved performance and motivation (Olatunde, 2021), while others note distractions, dependency, and unequal access to devices as limiting factors (Eze, 2020).
Thus, understanding how digital technologies influence academic achievement among Senior Secondary School students in Ikeja LGA is essential. 1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite these technological advancements, there remains uncertainty about whether such innovations have translated into improved academic performance among Senior Secondary School students.

Consequently, the effectiveness of digital learning in improving academic performance becomes inconsistent across schools within the same locality.
Additionally, the level of digital literacy among teachers and students varies significantly. Students may spend significant amounts of time online engaging in entertainment and social networking rather than focusing on schoolwork. To guide the study, the following hypothesis is formulated and will be tested statistically:
H₀: There is no significant relationship between digital technology usage and academic achievement among Senior Secondary School students in Ikeja LGA.
H₁: There is a significant relationship between digital technology usage and academic achievement among Senior Secondary School students in Ikeja LGA.

1.7 Scope of the Study
The study focuses on Senior Secondary School students in selected public and private schools within Ikeja Local Government Area of Lagos State. It examines the types of digital technologies used, their influence on study habits and academic performance, and the challenges associated with their use. The study covers the 2024/2025 academic session.

- Digital Technologies: Electronic tools, systems, and resources that generate, store, or process data, including computers, smartphones, tablets, the internet, and educational software.
